I was one of those children that was bussed in 1972 to Don Benito. When I look back on my grammer school years they were the best years of my life. I had an amazing teacher at Longfellow for the 4th grade. Violet Chapelow. She taught me about the California Goldrush and about Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

I sent my daughter to PUSD until she was in the 4th grade. I was PTA President as well as a room mother and an afterschool volunteer. I could see so much that was wrong with the system - but couldn't see enough parents and administrators that wanted to dig in and help.

I grieve for the fact that my daughter wasn't able to attend PUSD when it really was something.

Thanks to Wyatt and Hickambottom for having the backbone to do what they did.

I look back on my years with PUSD and have great memories.

These "heroes" were the forefathers of today's failing PUSD. Sure, it's noble they integrated PUSD, too bad they didn't insist the students of color actually LEARN something. Instead every kid had to feel good about themselves and got pushed through a system that remained rampantly racist, just not segregated.

Thank you very much. Without you maybe I wouldn't have to spend more than $24K to send my two mixed race kids to private school. PUSD better off? Maybe. PUSD students better off? Absolutely not!

I also have memories of college where I had to spend half of three quarters taking writing and remedial math classes because my PUSD public high school didn't teach me what I was supposed to learn.

We have a lot in common. I have two racially mixed children who attend private schools.

I pay over $25,000 in tuition also.

Educating children starts at home with the parents. When parents don't care enough to show up, get involved and take an active part in their child's education - the educators can't be blamed.

I agree with your college experience - by the time I got to Eliot Jr. High which was in 1976 - I was way behind in math.

My parents pulled me out and sent me to Catholic school. It took me a good year to get caught up to where I should have been. I do remember that some teachers just didn't care - those classes I thought were "fun" because there was no homework.

How silly of me.

Based on the influx of immigrants in the recent decades - even if PUSD hadn't become integrated - I think the district still would have changed.

PS - I read your blog on a daily basis ... pretty cool.

I remember that brilliant educators like Bob Salley and Stan Sheinkopf left the district at this time as well as brilliant administrators such as Elias Galvan. I wonder how they would view the adminstration mentioned above.
