Within the vale of Annandale

Staff Photographer Walt Mancini took this shot of the 20 acres of Annandale Canyon in the Linda Vista Hills in far west Pasadena that last week were formally dedicated in perpetuity to open space.
He'd been having a hard time getting a shot that truly showed the whole, wild canyon, and as he was leaving the ceremony he was visiting with a nearby homeowner who lives above the canyon and who offered his house as the best place to get the definitive shot.
The news photo that ended up running in the paper showed the electeds and activists who had gathered at the classic ribbon-cutting ceremony, which took place on the open graded area in the middle distance of the photo. (It's a lot owned by former John Muir and now NBA basketball player Stacey Augmon; wonder if he'll build there to retire to a view after this, his 15th year in the league?) Newspaper photos are biased toward, and properly so, shots with people in them; but it's nice to see exactly what is being saved in the deal worked out with the former owner, who was going to build a bunch of luxury homes there. Pretty steep territory, but a trail will go down the steep canyon bottom someday ...

This is an area I frequently walk (the road above circling it). So glad to hear it's been put aside. I wonder if they'll figure out a way to connect it to the adjacent Eagle Rock trail?

I'm very happy this little wild valley has been saved, and though I've often stood on the edge and wondered how to get down to that pond I heard was there, I hope that whatever trail is built will be a very small one lest too many humans drive away the wildlife that finds sanctuary here.

Larry Wilson, this is just another example of your failure to do any fact-checking.
Stacey Augmon hasn't played in the NBA since 2006, yet you characterize him as still being an ACTIVE player in the league.
This actually does not come as a surprise to us, since so many of your columns are filled with inaccurate facts.
And you wonder why so many people take what you write with a grain of salt.

I like hearing good news, and this is good news.

I realize that there's a recession and that the Star News is suffering from declining subscribtions and ad revenues, but can't the Star News simply hire a fact checker to follow Larry Wilson around ?
Then again, with all of Larry's trips during working hours to Pie 'n Burger, Wolfe Burgers, The Huntington, Vroman's, the dry cleaners, and his favorite watering hole, the Star News would end up having to pay the fact checker's expense account, too.
It could get pretty expensive, but on the other hand, at least there would be ONE job the Star News could report has been created in spite of Obama's economy-killing policies.

Nice taxpayers like me are paying so Stacey Augmon gets a great view from his retirement mansion.

The point being that land has been put aside and will remain forever undeveloped. I once took this street walk and counted 17 deer.
geesh
