Don't sweat your SAT scores

An article about a tutoring center to be published next week will feature information about free SAT practice tests in November and December.

Nicole Kwon, program director of the C2 Education learning center, said getting into college is extremely competitive these days. She recommends eighth grade students to start devising a college plan and map out steps to be college ready.

In eighth grade, my plan was to find a cute boy to hang out with during the lunch time dance. That might explain why I only got a 1020 on my SAT; 600 math and 420 verbal -- kinda pathetic for an aspiring English major. But my tale is evidence that a mediocre SAT score is not the end of the world. It just means that when you grow up, you might not write for the New York Times but you can still get a job at the Daily Bulletin. See, it's not that bad.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA -- Despite all the school measures to ensure that students don't get left behind, Daniel Cho, 12, got left behind. Severe and persistent headaches made David miss class often starting third grade and it didn't take long until his grades took a dive.

His father, David Cho, turned to private tutoring and found C2 Education on Foothill Boulevard. After several months, Daniel's D's and F's morphed into B's and C's. Daniel's sister, Grace Cho, 10, got enrolled, too.

"My kids enjoy it so much, they want to go early," Cho said. "They feel positive about themselves."

The Inland Valley is teeming with after-school centers geared to give students a competitive edge. For C2 Education to have a competitive edge, the center is offering free SAT practice tests in November and December.

It has other draws, too. Program Director Nicole Kwon said each incoming student takes a diagnostic test to determine how many hours that student will have to study at the center before seeing improvement. If the student doesn't improve by that time, said Kwon, the center will offer classes for free.

The 68 students who are currently enrolled at the center get individualized attention; there's usually just three students per teacher.

Students from kindergarten to 12th grade get help in time and homework management, college prep tests and any subjects that the student is struggling in. Older students can get college counseling and college application help, too.

Kwon, 33, a graduate of Rancho Cucamonga High School, said staying on top of school work and preparing for college has gotten much more complicated in recent years, making tutoring centers a key player in the education scene.

"Before you had your (Grade Point Average) and the SAT was just a test that you take," Kwon said. "Now a lot of parents know about the importance of the SAT. It's getting more and more competitive."
