Resignation letter from GOP group president

Diane Fedele, who was responsible for printing "Obama bucks" in the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated newsletter sent this letter to members today.

October 20, 2008

To:  Members of Chaffey Community Republican Women

I offer my sincere apology to everyone, especially club members, the Federation, and the Republican Party for my poor judgment and lack of insight and sensitivity in the offensive satric political cartoon I am responsible for including in our club newsletter.

Neither I, nor members of our club, took part in the creation of the satiric political cartoon and the products depicted on it. It was obtained through a chain e-mail that has been hitting in-boxes along with a slew of others aimed at providing discredit to both presidential candidates and their running mates. I am solely responsible for it being included in our club newsletter which was distributed to approximately 200 people, most of which had not seen the newsletter until the media coverage began.

Upon her receipt of the newsletter I was contacted by Sheila Raines at which time she expressed disappointment with the satiric political cartoon being in the newsletter. I immediately apologized to her and we continued with a conversation on another subject in a friendly manner. I was left with the understanding that my apology was accepted. If Ms. Raines wanted or expected something more, it was not stated, nor did I leave the conversation with the feeling that more was required. I have no explanation as to why Ms. Raines then turned to the newspapers, other than what she has subsequently identified as her role of providing "oversight" to the club. Ms. Aquanetta Warren has never contacted me.

Many have asked why this was even included -- my explanation follows:  Republicans are the party that wants all people to have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream, and the Democrats want to put a ceiling on the American Dream by (in Obama's own words) "spreading the wealth." THAT was the intent of the inclusion of the satiric political cartoon inserted in the newsletter. The point, that has been lost in the subsequent discussion over images, was that Obama will "take from the rich and give to the poor" and that we ALL would be buying food with his "Obama Welfare Dollars." An ideological statement, not a racial one. His face on the bill could have easily been replaced by any of the leading Democrats (Pelosi, Reid, Frank, et al), as they all have this "Robin Hood" (socialist) ideology that has already proven, over the last 40 years, to be counterproductive and destructive to our families and the American society at large. Not to mention, outright oppressive and completely incompatible with our free enterprise system.

For many, it may be hard to believe, but some people do not associate certain foods with particular groups. I do not think like a bigot, and because of that fact I did not view this as racial, because I do not have a racially discriminating point of view.

For those who choose to disbelieve such a statment, neither I, nor anyone will be able to convince them otherwise.

Candidate Obama and the mainstream media continue to try and make this election about race. it should not be that anytime we respond to a statment in Obama's speeches we are the ones defined as racist. Having included the offending cartoon in my attempt to make a statement about the massive government give-aways in our country under his presidency was imprudent and for that I apologize.

While I had hoped to step down at the end of year, it is with considerable sadness that I am forced to hasten my departure in this manner. The club has been a source of my energy, my passions, and my time for many years, yet in order to avoid further negative publicity for the club, and you the members, I hereby tender my resignation as president, effective immediately.
