Census is coming

U.S. Census Bureau representative Ardess Lilly reminded the City Council this evening that 2010 is creeping up and is therefore time to conduct a Census count, the city's third.

Lilly wants the city to strive for a complete count, adding that the number of residents not counted could equate to an extra Congressional seat for this area. He said there are many challenges in getting the count right. The influx of new immigrants and number of gated communities are some. Another challenge -- "There are those with non-traditional types of housing," Lilly said. "Otherwise known as homeless people."

The bureau is now looking for workers to conduct the survey. Lilly said applicants should at least have the skill of walking and chewing gum at the same time.

"I think I can do that," Councilman Rex Gutierrez said.

Councilwoman Diane Williams disagreed. "You're out, Rex," she said.
