New banners up

New banners.JPGThe new military banners, featuring an image of the service member honored, are now up on Haven and Base Line. Staff Photographer Jennifer Cappuccio Maher captured this pic on Haven near Arrow.

Faded banners were in need of a redesign and after many months of meetings, the city went with this one -- a clean, white background so the photo and text would pop. The previous banners had text running over the image of the American flag, which was hard to read. Councilman Rex Gutierrez, who liked the photograph element on Chino Hills' banners, really pushed for the photo.

The new banners will likely end the controversy behind the city program. Some residents, including Bill Hanlon and Jim Moffatt, put a lot of pressure on the city to fund the program entirely. Until now, the city charged military families for the banner. In the midst of the debate, an anonymous donor stepped up to sponsor a huge bulk of the program. Hanlon and Moffatt would still like the city to foot the bill, but they seem pleased that families will no longer have to.
