Why must we always feed the egos of firefighters. They are just doing the job that they are paid to do! If they really were so heroic they would do their job without such big pensions and benefits. Construction workers have a much more dangerous job than firemen. That's a fact, look up the stats. I don't see us spending money to honor them.

Chris is spot on!
It's not just the job they are paid to do, it is the job they are over paid to do - avg. salary for R.C. is over $200,000 / yr. That is not a typo.
Of course, the hue and cry will be that it is less - which is true if you look at the theoretical pay scale and you ignore the overtime that they are guaranteed of each year.
In any case, what matters is what is actually being paid.
Also, keep in mind that $200,000 is the average - many are paid much more than that.
Why the avg. $120,000 that police are paid looks like a down right bargain. Although, $120,000 does seem like a lot to spend for them to speed around town in an air conditioned car, talking on the cell phone, and blowing through stop lights on the way for donuts.
