Signs and bumps? No thanks
Traffic Engineer Jon Gillespie presented a plethora of traffic calming options for Red Hill last night -- speed humps, speed pillows, rumble strips and radar speed signs. None were approved.
For one, they're just too noisy. Residents could be driven crazy with the sound of cars going over humps and bumps in front of their house.
They're also ugly. The radar speed signs, which are run on solar power and remind motorists how fast they're going, seem like a good idea. But most people probably don't want one in front of their house, said Gillespie.
One resident complained to Gillespie after the city installed such a sign, saying he didn't like looking out the window in the middle of the night and seeing "Your speed 50."
He also told Gillespie, "It just didn't fit with my landscaping."

poor red hillers... how about checkpoints on all entry points for dui - driving under influence???
I am so sick of hearing about these few residents in this one neighborhood. What a joke. Just because they are golf course homes they get special treatment. Hey why not build them some tennis courts too. The only way to fix the problem of unwanted traffic through Red Hill is to make the whole damn neighborhood a gated community, and if that is too difficult for the residents then screw em. This is a big city of 175,000 people and we have much more dire problems than one very stupid and spoiled neighborhood. NO MORE SPEED BUMPS IN RANCHO CUCAMONGA!!! Poorly planned cities need speed bumps...is Rancho a poorly planned city? Instead of housing pods with collector streets and boulevards, shouldn't the city be building vistas, parkways, and light rail?
Radar speed signs DO work at slowing cars and newer designs ensure that the displays can only be read by targeted drivers. There is a nice collection of links to government studies regarding the effectiveness of these displays at www.informationdisplay.com and a good review of various traffic calming options at www.stopspeeders.org. The best thing about radar speed signs, is that they don't impede emergency vehicles, use big brother tactics (cameras) or ruin your car like speed bumps and other measures can.
These radar speed signs do work, many statistics on a site we bought ours from www.driverfeedbacksigns.com, and they can program them to work during certain hours.
