Smoking ban in effect starting Saturday
If you light up at a bus stop this weekend, you probably won't get fined but you might get a dirty look.
Starting Saturday, smoking will be prohibited within 20 feet of outdoor service lines and transit stops. The ordinance was passed on March 17 by a City Council that felt non-smokers standing in lines are a captive audience and can't leave their place to avoid cigarette smoke. The ordinance applies to all 225 bus stops, Metrolink station, ATM and movie theater lines.
The city is not expected to actively enforce the new stipulation but rather rely on posted signs to encourage self enforcement.
City Hall, parks, Victoria Gardens Cultural Center and other city properties have been smoke-free since 2008. Council members considered widening the ban to outdoor dining areas of restaurants and apartment complexes but felt it was too stringent.
If you have questions about the ordinance, call 909-477-2700

Has anyone brought up talk about those new fangled electronic cigaretts that only spew out vapor and no smoke? I wish they had cigars like that because I would personally bring one to Jim Moffat to try out.
Wow. A collapsing economy and this is what the city is focusing on. Embarrassing. You should not make a law if you cannot enforce it. Self enforcement is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. People were just fine with cigarette edict-it until the city butted in. Next there will be a ban on "fornication". As Eric Cartman would say..."Wwwweeeeaaaaakkkkk"
I think the vast cultural center plaza is the perfect designated smoking area for downtown Rancho. Before this ban I would slip away from the busy streets to the cultural center plaza to smoke. It was perfect because no one is ever there. Now I am told that this area is off limits. Ridiculous. The shops still have ashtrays in front of them because they are not going to discriminate against paying customers. You will never get rid of the ashtrays in front of the Department Stores either. The department stores also do not discriminate.
Designated smoking areas might work but the gathering of upset smokers is not good for city officials. They will converse and gripe and talk about Jim Moffat and how they are going to vote these morons out of office. Welcome to Disneyland. No drinking, no dancing, and no smoking. Look at Redlands. Their city is hosting a downtown 420 party.
I was standing next to a bus stop yesterday, Sunday, waiting for my ride
(not the bus, but it's easy to pull in on a buy street when the bus is not there). There was an elderly couple both smoking while waiting for the bus. Next time who do I report this so they get citations. Do you call Rancho police, code inforcement, Rancho fire? I hope they can respond fast enough before the culprits finishes the cig and gets rid of the evidennce.
Just who should you call for this Rancho crime of smoking at the bus shelter?
well atleast they didn't add another tax to a pack of smokes!
