The new old school

Since when did the 1980s become retro? Wasn't 1980 like 15 years ago?

I dropped by the new teen rec center today and heard Cyndi Lauper blasting out of speakers hooked to a laptop.

What do today's teens know about "Girls Just Want To Have Fun"?

"They think it's retro," said Heather Davis, the community services supervisor who, like me, was a junior high student in the 80s. "We were playing Michael Jackson earlier and they liked it 'cause it's old."

And sure enough, at the grand opening of The Rec there were throngs of teens wearing neon colors and high-top sneakers. I guess to them, listening to Cyndi Lauper is cool the way I think Frank Sinatra is cool.

I was flipping channels the other day & stumbled across a college football game on some "classic" channel. The uniforms had an "old school" look, the footage seemed a big grainy (& dedicedly non-HD), the on-screen graphics were relatively clunky.

I hit the info button to see what decade (or century) the game was from.

1990. (Wait, what?!? Wasn't 1990 like a year & a half ago?)

Sigh ...

I'd write more, but I need to go take a shot of Metamucil, then yell at some kids to get off my lawn ...

You're lucky you can still yell, Hugh. ... Yes, the thing about HD is once you go HD, all the non-HD programming looks blurry. ... I'm dreading the day the newsroom hires a reporter who has no memory of 9/11. That will be soon, I think.

1980, 15 years ago? I wish! Graduated from high school in 1980 and looking forward to my 30 year reunion from Don Lugo. Sometimes when I hear those songs, I can picture myself sitting in the classroom listening to my teacher. Good times!

Scott, do you listen to those songs on your walkman?

Scott in the RC said:

Actually had a "watchman", a Sony walkman with a television. We would either listen to music or watch the television, back before the digital converter boxes of the 2000's.

Wow, Scott. If you had that today, you can watch the "Watchmen" on your watchman. But without the converter box, you'd just get snow.
