Rancho Googlemonga lost :(

| | Comments (2) |
Kansas City? Whatever, Google.

It seems that all that silliness surrounding the Rancho Googlemonga campaign wasn't enough. Google picked Kansas City to receive its ultra-fast broadband network.

You might remember that around the same time last year, Google announced it would award a community with Internet service that would be 100 times faster than what a typical household receives today. The search engine giant was vague about the qualifications, launching a plethora of creative responses such as flash mobs, YouTube videos and one city renaming itself.

This City Hall went all out, too, launching a Rancho Googlemonga Facebook page and initiating a flash mob at Victoria Gardens. But unfortunately, Rancho Cucamonga and more than 1,000 other cities lost to Kansas City.

"We're so thrilled by the interest we've generated," blogged Google's Milo Medin. "Today is the start, not the end (of) the project. And over the coming months, we'll be talking to other interested cities about the possibility of us bringing ultra high-speed broadband to their communities."

I bet Topeka, Kan. felt stupid. The city's mayor signed a proclamation renaming the city to Google, Kan.

Univ. of La Verne performance to feature Gilfry

Rancho Cucamonga resident Carin Gilfry will be among those performing at University of La Verne on April 16 in a recital presented by LA Opera. Gilfry, a first-year mezzo-soprano in the company's Domingo-Thornton Artist Program, is the daughter of famed opera singer Rod Gilfry.

The free community recital, which begins at 7:30 p.m., marks the opera company's 25th anniversary. La Verne is one of 25 venues selected to be a part of the "25 Recitals for 25 Seasons: LA Opera's Young Artist Celebration."

Seats at the Ann and Steve Morgan Auditorium, 1950 Third St., La Verne, are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Rest in peace, Rosey

| | Comments (0) |
Rosey.JPGRosey, the java-loving daschund, has died. She was days from turning 17, her owner Mary Cannevas said.

The graying Rancho Cucamonga dog was the subject of a City News feature last year. While most healthy daschunds have been known to live 12 to 15 years, Rosey's health started deteriorating at age 7. She lost her teeth and her back gave out. But for some reason, Rosey hung in there, outliving other dogs and even humans in the Cannevas family. If Rosey was a woman, she would probably be a daily visitor to the James L. Brulte Senior Center, spunky and active in a get fit class.

Rosey's owners think the daily dose of fresh brewed coffee might be the elixir of youth. The daschund drank it every day with a bit of cream.

When people accuse newspapers of printing only stories about death and destruction, I like pointing them to this article. We also write about coffee-drinking canines, too.

Vacation on a budget

| | Comments (7) |
on vacation.jpg
I learned during my furloughcation that there are some things you can't put on your credit card.

You can't put fines from an Oregon speeding ticket on your credit card. (Since when did the northbound 101 become a 30 mph zone? Oh, since it started passing through small coastal towns five blocks ago. The one pictured below with a lighthouse is north of Gold Beach.) But officer, I'm on furlough and I have to save money for all these new restaurants opening in Rancho Cucamonga. That did not fly.

Mt. Shasta.jpgThumbnail image for lighthouse.jpgYou can't put tire chains on your credit card, either. At least not when you're buying them from some guy on the side of the freeway in the middle of a snow storm, pictured right. (Mount Shasta? How did you get here? I thought you were a grassy knoll. Nobody told me you rose to 3,500 feet into your own microclimate.)

Voodoo.jpgThumbnail image for blazers.jpgBut there are so many other things you CAN put on your credit card. Take this mid-afternoon snack at Portland's Voodoo Doughnuts for example, where lines outside wrap around the block for a 30-minute wait. You can also put basketball tickets and everything at the concession stand at the Rose Quarter, where the Trailblazers walloped the Wizards on Tuesday, on your credit card.

And in pricey San Francisco, there are places where you can put your wallet away. The Palace of Fine Arts, one of my favorite spots in the city, is free. The top photo is of me paying homage to our Daily Bulletin on vacation feature.

Be back in 13 days

This blogger is on furlough and Portland bound. Why stay home and mope when you can put it on your credit card? That's my motto.

Will be back March 28 with some Daily Bulletin on vacation shots.

Earth Day is around corner

| | Comments (7) |

The Cucamonga Valley Water District will host a free Earth Day celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 9. It's a children-friendly event and the first 500 families to show up will get a prize. There will be food, giveaways and a magician.

Festivities take place on 10440 Ashford St. at the Frontier Project.

Got items for flea market?

| | Comments (1) |

It's spring. The sun outside tells us and so does the annual tradition of pushing the clocks forward this weekend.

With spring, comes spring cleaning. If you've got things in your garage you no longer need, consider donating them to the animal shelter. The Animal Care and Adoption Center will hold a Furry Friends Flea Market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 30 at Lions Center West. Proceeds will go to the animal shelter.

If you have tools, garden items, books, small furniture, and other household items to donate to the flea market, drop them off at the animal shelter on 11780 Arrow Route from 2 to 5:30 p.m. starting March 30.

Playhouse to stage Anne of Green Gables

| | Comments (0) |

There's an Anne of Green Gables marathon on Sunday starting at noon on KVCR. That's channel 24 where I live.

It just so happens, the story of orphan Anne Shirley will also be staged at the Lewis Family Playhouse from May 7 to May 22. The musical adaption, appropriate for children 7 and older, caps off the fifth season of the MainStreet Theatre Company.

"I hope that people who see the film will be excited to come see our production," said MainStreet producer Murry Hepner in a statement. "The adaption is very true to the book and the music is luscious."

The shows will be staged at 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 p.m. on Sundays. On May 15, the matinee will be interpreted in American Sign Language. There is no performance on May 8. Tickets are $17; $15 for seniors and $14 for youth ages 12 and under.

Check back in this space for information about the children theater company's sixth season, which will be unveiled next month.

Any readers out there visited Five Guys Burgers yet? The much-raved burger joint on 7945 Haven opened on Wednesday. I'm wondering if the lines are crazy.

Five Guys seems to be expanding to five locations in the I.E. Restaurants in Mira Loma, San Bernardino, Redlands and Corona are on the way.

Let's hope for sunshine

On March 20, a car show to benefit special needs children will take place at The Magic Lamp restaurant on 8189 Foothill Blvd. The fundraiser was originally scheduled last month but postponed because of the rain.

Owners of pre-1970s classic cars can enter in the show starting 8 a.m. The cost is $25 and includes a Magic Lamp buffet. Proceeds go toward Rising Stars, a nonprofit that uses equestrian therapy for special needs children and young adults.

It's free to view the cars from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and to cast a vote for a favorite. Prizes will go to the top five vote-getters including best of show.

On the agenda: senior citizens issues

| | Comments (0) |
The City Council will take its meeting to the senior center at Central Park on Monday starting at 9 a.m. The idea is to bring the meeting to the community and make it easier for seniors to attend.

"Those of you that may be interested in coming out and seeing the council leave these chambers and go out into the community and hold a meeting, we would encourage your attendance," said Mayor Dennis Michael.

LMD, a perennial topic

| | Comments (0) |
The City Council on Wednesday kick-started a process for a special vote in regards to landscape maintenance. This affects Landscape Maintenance District 2, or the Victoria Planned Community, which is generally located south of the 210 Freeway and west of East Avenue.

If you own property in this district, you should be getting a letter this weekend about a community meeting scheduled for March 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Rancho Cucamonga High School. The meeting takes place in the multi-purpose room. The school is on 11801 Lark Drive.

The purpose of the meeting is to inform residents about the upcoming mail-in ballot. City Hall staff members also want to know how much property owners are willing to pay for landscape maintenance.

Bone marrow drive tomorrow at Lions Center

| | Comments (5) |
Ronan1.JPGTomorrow is Ronan Godfrey's third birthday. The City of Hope Medical Center will host a bone marrow drive for the little Fontana boy who needs a transplant. Wouldn't it be a nice birthday gift if we can find a match for him?

The bone marrow drive takes place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Lions Center East on 9191 Base Line. Representatives from City of Hope will take a cheek swab sample; it's free and takes just 10 minutes.

Ronan has a rare case of aplastic anemia, a genetic blood disorder that requires a bone marrow transplant. You can't tell Ronan is sick. He plays Lego and is glued to the television when Blue's Clues comes on Nickelodeon just like any other boy. But Ronan and his mother, Rachel Godfrey, pictured above, have to go to the hospital two or three times a week for his blood and platelet transfusions. A transfusion can take up to three hours so he kills time by watching Disney movies.

Godfrey and her husband, Nicholas, feel like they're in a race against time. Although Ronan is in good spirits and has fallen into a pattern of trips to the hospital, an ominous cloud hangs over the family.

Finally, a new heart

lauren hope.jpgLauren Hope Gentry, the little girl featured in the Daily Bulletin two weeks ago, has received a new heart. Lauren, 4, who was born with a heart defect, has been waiting for a heart transplant since November. She has been stuck at the Loma Linda Children's Hospital ever since.

According to friends of the family, Lauren went into surgery early this morning and got her new heart at 7 a.m.

Get well, Lauren. The entire community is rooting for you!

On the agenda: City Council

| | Comments (0) |
Residents of Landscape Maintenance District 2, which includes nearly 5,800 homes south of the 210 Freeway and west of East Avenue, may soon vote on whether to pay more for landscape maintenance. At tonight's meeting, the City Council will decide whether to begin the process of a special vote.

The City Council is also expected to appoint Al Arguello and Rosemarie Brown to serve four-year terms on the Community and Arts Foundation board.

The Rancho Cucamonga Community Theatre will stage "The Man Who Came to Dinner" for five shows starting Saturday at the Lewis Family Playhouse. The play centers on the outlandish character Sheridan Whiteside, who slips on ice and fractures his hip while dining at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley. Fearing a lawsuit, the Stanleys have no choice but to put up with their egocentric guest. "The Man Who Came to Dinner" is a comedy that reminds audiences to always chose their dinner guests wisely.

The show will be 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 and 12. It will be a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday and March 13. Tickets are $17; $15 for youth and seniors.

DB on vacation

Vacation.JPGWill Plunkett brought the Rancho Cucamonga edition of City News with him on a weekend trip to Julian and snapped this photo. Plunkett visited Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, which he said was a place that "obviously plagiarized our fair city's fame for its own, just dyslexically changing it a bit." I think the CR has nothing on the RC. Look, it doesn't even have a Victoria Gardens.
