Goodbye macaroni, hello pig trough?
Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour (remember Farrell's?) wants to open in this city in the Terra Vista Town Center where Macaroni Grill used to be. Next Tuesday, representatives from the ice cream parlor will talk to the Design Review Committee at 7 p.m. about the changes they want to bring to the building.
Once upon a time, there was a Farrell's in Montclair Plaza. Actually, once upon a time, there were Farrell's all over Southern California in the 1970s and 80s. But after being sold to an investment group in 1985, according to Farrell's website, the restaurant faltered and nearly all of its 130 locations closed by 1990.
Today, there are two locations -- Mission Viejo and Santa Clarita -- offering shakes, sundaes and the famed pig trough. At $11.99, the pig trough is two orders of the banana split sundae served on a, you guessed it, pig trough.
Farrell's wants to come to Foothill Boulevard but it wants to keep its flashy designs and bold colors. The Terra Vista development boasts Spanish Revival architecture using mild earth tones.
Does Farrell's belong there? The Design Review Committee, consisting of two planning commissioners and two Planning Department staff members, will decide.

I don't remember a Macaroni Grill at Terra Vista. Which building are you referring to?
Thanks for your blog, by the way. It's nice to actually get some local news now and then!
Just imagine if the farrels opened in Rancho and it closed down and then became a Sea Harbor Seafood restaurant just like the Farrels location in Rosemead. I predict yet another AQMD hearing!
I remember very well. It was a fun and very nice place. Great for kids birthday parties.
The firt one we went to was in Pontiac, Michigan.
That's the thing about Terra Vista, PJ. Every building looks the same and since Macaroni closed several years back, I don't remember either. It fronted Foothill somewhere east of On the Border and Chili's I believe.
I find myself getting confused where to turn in Rancho. Having only lived here a short time, its turning into a mini-Irvine for me. 3-4 wide lane roads with 50 mph speed limits, rows and rows of track houses with intersections that repeat every couple blocks. Street corners with the semi-circular stucco planters and walls proclaiming the name of the development at all 4 corners. not as bad as Irvine as this repeats for miles between the I-5 to the I-405.
The major difference is that the two 99 Ranch Markets and the korean Super H Mart have yet to be declared a nuisance despite being located adjacent to residential properties.
I know what you mean, Andy. When I first started covering Rancho 5 or 6 years ago, I always got streets confused. There's not a lot of landmarks to use as points of reference. But you get used to it.
