Pho, Santa and BBC

phorancho.jpgI stopped by Pho Rancho for a pre-City Council meeting dinner last night. Opened four months ago at the Vons/Trader Joe's center on Haven, Pho Rancho is the fifth Vietnamese noodle shop in the city, to my knowledge.

My pho on Wednesday came with "Here Comes Santa Claus" playing over stereo speakers and the BBC news on the overhead television. Not one of the four other customers seemed fazed. Why wouldn't you want to eat Vietnamese food while listening to Christmas music and learning about David Beckham's new Galaxy deal?

In addition to pho, Pho Rancho also serves rice, spring rolls and banh mi, or Vietnamese baguette sandwiches. Their banh mi, which comes with chicken, pork or beef, are $2.99. That makes me wonder what Subway, which is several doors down and boasts $5 foot-long sandwiches, thinks about the competition.

So, what exactly did you order? Hard to tell from the picture.

That's a bowl of vegetables and tofu pho. It's got broccoli, green peppers, carrots, onions, fried garlic and fried tofu. I also tasted the marinated chicken with rice. Both very good.

Yummy and cozy! Great for a rainy weekend.

There's an article in tomorrow's WSJ about the satisfaction of Asian noodle soups.

I'll be sure to check out that WSJ article. But reading about food always makes me eat even when I'm not hungry.

Feliz navidad was playing and wow... this place has a really crappy paint job. Who ever painted this place (probably the owners) didn't understand there's something called masking tape. Soup was a bit bland but I'd go back again to try other stuff.

Next time you're in the mood for Vietnamese without the Christmas music, you can also try Pho Ha on Hellman and Foothill at Chuck E Cheese center.
