Many are mom and pop shops that depend on passersby. If you're in the area, try to stop by, even if it's slightly out of the way.

Keep in mind that although Haven is closed from Sixth and Arrow, you can still go past the detour signs at Sixth and Arrow to frequent businesses and doctor's offices. You just can't cross the tracks.

El Ranchero, at Sixth and Haven remains open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Use Sixth to get to the Mexican eatery. The other El Ranchero on Carnelian and 19th has been opened for 10 years. When owner Robert Cantarero opened the Haven location, he had no idea that construction on Haven would begin three weeks later.

Just because the street is closed is no excuse to skip your workout. California Athletic Club, although a bit tricky to get to, is still open. Going north bound, use Sixth and go into the Arco station to a back road that takes you behind the gym. Going south bound, use Hermosa, Eighth, Center and Seventh to get to the gym.

Perhaps the hardest hit of all is Haven Car Wash, which depends heavily on people driving by and hardly anybody has been driving by Haven and Jersey since Friday. Owner Nick Nazari said it's been a nightmare since initial work on the street started earlier this year. Use Utica and Jersey to get to the car wash/gas station. You can also take Haven past Arrow going southbound.

Mediha Fejzagic DiMartino/Staff Photographer

The Daily Bulletin newsroom likes to use all kinds of excuses to throw pot lucks. Today's lunchtime bash marked Halloween. On the menu was a meat and rice dish that resembled a cat litter box, a mud pie that looked like dirt with gummy worms oozing out and a cheese plate in the shape of Frankenstein.

I contributed something more palatable -- Chinese chicken salad. When I make this dish, it's an inside joke among me and my friends. I hope this doesn't come as breaking news but Chinese chicken salad is not Chinese. The Chinese rarely eat raw vegetables and if we do, it never comes with crispy noodles.

In fifth grade, when I was still a new immigrant, Mrs. Werner threw a multicultural pot luck and she insisted I bring a Chinese chicken salad. I didn't know what that was but figured it was some traditional Chinese thing that I didn't understand. I was sure that my mom would know how to make it. I got really stressed out when she said she had no idea.

We ended up making fried rice, an ethnic yet non-offensive dish that drew praise from the PTA president. I didn't get in trouble for not bringing the salad and went home relieved albeit still unsure what Chinese chicken salad was.
Q: Where is City Manager Jack Lam going tomorrow for vacation?

Lam and Councilman Dennis Michael, led by their wives, are some of the most traveled people I know. New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Peru are just some countries they've visited.

For the next several weeks, Lam and his wife, Linda, will be somewhere that's 0 to 25 degrees. They'll see seals, penguins and perhaps an orca or two.

When most Americans think of a faraway vacation, they think of spending the day at the Louvre and taking a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower.

But Linda Lam is more adventurous than that and holds the belief that the challenging corners of the world must be visited before one gets too old.

"She says, 'You can always travel to Europe on a walker,' " the city manager said.

A: Antarctica
