sage.JPGCongratulations to Sage Young, 12, who placed third in the L.A. Lakers NBA Fit/WNBA Fit Dribble, Dish and Swish regional competition in Los Angeles. The Dribble, Dish and Swish program gives boys and girls an opportunity to show off their dribbling, passing and shooting skills in a time-based basketball competition against their peers. More than 40,000 children ages 7 to 12 took part in local competitions around the country.

Sage, pictured here, a seventh grader at Deer Creek Intermediate, won the local competition at the Boys and Girls Club in Palm Springs last month and advanced to the regional match. There, he got a chance to meet broadcasters John Ireland, Billy MacDonald and Mychal Thompson.

Housing advocate Gracia honored

Gracia.jpgCongratulations to Nacho Gracia, an advocate of the city's Northtown community, for receiving the lifetime achievement award at the Southern California Association of Non-profit Housing's annual conference.

For his work on affordable housing and community development, Gracia received the "Houser's Hero" award during the 2011 Homes Within Reach Awards luncheon.

Gracia, a former executive director of the Northtown Housing Development Corporation and a current board member, was instrumental in bringing basic infrastructure to Northtown. Along with other residents, Gracia convinced city and county leaders that Northtown needed sidewalks, curbs, gutters and lights. Gracia also led efforts to bring Old Town Park and the nearby Northtown Community Center to the Feron Boulevard neighborhood. As NHDC's first executive director, Gracia led the organization through many years of success, bringing affordable housing to seniors and families throughout the region.

Pallares family mourns one year later

Spc. Pallares.jpgArmy combat engineer Ronnie J. Pallares died one year ago this Sunday. The Alta Loma High School graduate was just 19 when he was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

Friends and family will gather near his military banner on Haven Avenue north of Sixth Street Sunday evening. Pallares' mother, Brenda Pallares, said it'll be a small tribute for her son and the community is invited to bring a candle and share a moment with the family. Taps will be played at 6 p.m.

The family will also gather at the Pallares' gold star banner again on Friday at 7 p.m. Friday would have been Pallares' 21st birthday.

Pallares' military banner, on the west side of Haven Avenue, became a makeshift memorial during the days following his death. On patriotic holidays, the light pole is often seen decorated with American flags and other memorabilia.

Filmmaker on final stretch

Hills.jpgAlta Loma High School graduate Sara Hills, pictured, needs all the help she can get. The writer and producer is making a short film "You Got This," a story about two young women, whose paths cross during a charity run. Hills, a runner herself, plans to shoot the film in Rancho Cucamonga next month. This is her thesis project for school, the prestigious American Film Institute.

AFI is paying $13,000 for Hills and her team to shoot the film. Hills has raised $11,000 so far and needs another $8,000. She is also looking for a hotel to house her crew of 35 people, a catering company to feed everyone, a golf cart to shoot the running scenes and extras to be in the movie.

"We're also looking for some extra hands to help with the production," she said. "Just some extra hands on deck."

Visit the "You Got This" website for more about the film or to learn how you can help.
