REV’s nonleague schedule lives up to expectations...

With a nonleague schedule that featured two CIF champions and one of the traditional powers in San Bernardino County football, Redlands East Valley's 2007 nonleague schedule has proved itself.
All three teams (Colton, Compton Dominguez and Riverside North) will be playing in CIF semifinals this Friday.
The combined record of those three teams? 29-6.
The Wildcats (12-0) are playing in their first-ever CIF football semifinal this Friday against Corona Santiago (7-4). Both teams share two common opponents this season in Murrieta Valley and Norco High School.
The Sharks took a 20-8 victory over Murrieta Valley and lost a 28-21 game to Norco in Mountain View League play. The Wildcats have beaten both Murrieta Valley and Norco in the postseason, taking 60-53 and 38-7 victories respectively.
Just like the Wildcats, the Sharks have played three teams that will be playing semifinal games this Friday. They lost 69-7 to Corona Centennial, dropped a 17-7 game to Chaparral (Centennial's Inland Division semifinal opponent) and fell to Pac-5 football power Anaheim Servite, 17-7.
The combined record of those three teams? Try 29-6.

REV's D rises to the occasion; Wildcats in semis...

Two down, two to go.
After hearing all week about its lack of defense, the Redlands East Valley football team provided its answer on the field Friday night against Norco High School in a CIF Inland Division quarterfinal game.
Final score: REV 38, Norco 7.
Overall, the Wildcats allowed just one completion in the entire game and intercepted three passes. In the first half alone, the Cougars gained onlytwo first downs. They finished with 176 rushing yards, but a bulk of those yards came in the latter stages of the second half when the game was well decided.
If it wasn't for a REV fumble on the first play of the game, the Wildcats very well might have pitched a shutout.
It was a complete effort across the board for REV, which got over 100 rushing yards from Chris Polk, three touchdown passes from Tyler Shreve and also had a defensive touchdown for a score.
The game was marred by well over 100 yards of Cougar penalties, including an inexplicable personal foul penalty that saw a Cougar player kick one of REV's players in the back of the helmet.
"Frustration," offered Cougar head coach Todd Gerhart after the game.
After the game, neither team shaked hands. It was a bold move by the Wildcats, but an understandable one. Besides, the Cougars weren't exactly lining up for the postgame handshake either.
REV head coach Kurt Bruich and Gerhart did have a warm exchange after the game though.
Now it's onto the semifinals for the Wildcats, a school first. They will face Corona Santiago High School, which defeated undefeated Vista Murrieta in a quarterfinal game, 32-24.
The game will be played at Yucaipa High School on Friday at 7 p.m. It will not be played at Ted Runner Stadium due to the university's annual "Feast of Lights."

REV does it, wins CIF title....

I've covered many volleyball games, but it's hard to imagine that I'll cover a match as exciting and just flat-out crazy as Redlands East Valley's CIF II-A championship triumph over North Torrance.
The Wildcats brought home the first CIF team title in REV history Saturday night, pulling out a 21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 22-25 and 27-25 victory.
And yes the score on the last game is correct. What should have been a 15-point match turned into a match that saw 13 match points (seven for REV) and put a jam-packed Cypress College crowd into an emotional wreck.
It got to the point where you just wanted to see the game end, but you didn't want to see your team lose.
Consecuitve aces from freshman phenom Krista Vansant sealed the deal, an almost strange twist when you consider service errors plagued the Wildcats on several match points in the final game.
REV now advances to the CIF State Playoffs. They will learn their fate today with a first-round match possibly on Monday.

Here's some other quick thoughts about the match

- The MVP of the game? It would have to be a shared award amongst several REV players. Freshman Krista Vansant battled some early struggles, but carried the Wildcats in the final game with several kills and her pocket aces. Junior middle blocker Victoria Brummett was a problem all day for the Saxons, slamming down several kills and coming up with blocks in crucial moments. There was also a sturdy effort from senior Gretchen Stankey, who was a steady force in the early going and throughout the match. And then you have sophomore setter Johnna Fouch, the consistent performer and one of a few players that played the whole match.

- The winner of the crowd battle? We'll give it to North Torrance, mainly for a student section that didn't let up. I honestly think they forced a REV service error or two. And when a REV player made an error, a chant of, "back to JV" could be heard. Not too bad.

- While it's not an unknown secret. The Wildcats are a pretty young team. Before the final game started, REV fielded a lineup of one senior, two juniors, two sophomores and one freshman. The Saxons' starting six featured three seniors and three juniors.

- As amazing as the first game was, there was also REV's comeback from an 11-4 deficit in that very same game. The Wildcats didn't appear a panicked team on the court, a credit to head coach Tricia Vansant and a team confidence that has grown throughout each passing game.

- While this may not be REV related, the championship game between Mira Costa and Redondo in the neighboring gym must have been slammed. The admission line resembled a 2-hour wait at Disneyland.

- So who ended up being the mighty teams that defeated the Wildcats this season? Rancho Cucamonga was one, a 3-1 loss that many on the REV side credited for sparking the team. The other was a 2-0 setback to Norco in the semifinals of the REV Tournament. There was also a 1-1 tie against La Quinta in pool play of the REV tourney. Rancho Cucamonga was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, Norco lost in the second round and La Quinta lost in the CIF Division III-A title game on Saturday.

A CIF championship for RHS water polo......

The third time was indeed a charm for the RHS boys’ water polo team. After two years of playoff losses against Murrieta Valley, the Terriers knocked the monkey off their back, earning a 7-6 victory over the Nighthawks Saturday afternoon at the William Wollett Jr. Aquatic Center.
It was a great water polo match from the opening whistle to the final buzzer.

Some quick thoughts about it
- Depending on how you look at it, the turning point varied. Some say it was RHS junior goalkeeper Andrew Heine’s stop of Jordan Koeppen’s 5-meter penalty shot in the first quarter. “The difference of the game,” RHS head coach Jeff Lamb would say after the match. Others would say junior Danny Anderson’s second goal with 2:25 left in the game, a goal that gave the Terriers a two-goal lead and a cushion they would not surrender.
- Anderson, who did not start, came up with a clutch performance off the bench. He scored two goals and had a crucial steal in the fourth quarter.
- RHS senior Kyle Adama led the Terriers with three goals and had the honor of holding onto the ball in the closing 12 seconds when the Terriers needed to run the clock out.
- A great crowd on both sides. While I would say MV’s side was the more vocal throughout, the RHS fans picked up the intensity as the match progressed.

Saturday’s victory is the first CIF title in RHS boys’ water polo history and the first team title at RHS since the boys’ tennis team won a title in 2004.

Terriers advance to State Meet....

They needed to place among the top seven.
Sixth place will do.
The Redlands High School girls’ cross country team reached a season-long goal, advancing to the CIF State Meet at Saturday’s CIF Finals.
The big hero of the day was senior Meredith Robie, who earned all-CIF honors thanks to a 13th place finish out of 117 runners.
Robie’s time was 17:55.
Overall, the Terriers ran a team time of 92 minutes and 32 seconds, 20 seconds better than last week’s run at the CIF prelims.
Now it’s onto next Saturday State Meet in Fresno for the Terriers, who according to Anzai are the first-ever RHS girls’ cross country team to reach the special meet.
Suagus High School claimed the team title, running an amazing team time of 88:22. They finished with 37 team points, compared to second-place Esperanza’s 123 and the Terriers’ 170.

North Torrance also seeking to make a first...

When the Redlands East Valley and North Torrance girls’ volleyball teams meet in tonight’s CIF Division II-A championship game, both will be attempting to make school history.
While the Wildcats are seeking a first-ever team title for REV, the Saxons are seeking a first-ever girls CIF team title.
Either way, expect a great match.
“I expect a good competitive match, that is what you expect for the finals,” North Torrance head coach Lawrence Hom said by e-mail. “We will have to rely on our ball control style of play in order to be effective. Serving, passing and defense wins and of course the team that makes the least errors. It should be exciting.”
REV head coach Tricia Vansant has noted that the Wildcats have a size advantage against the Saxons and Hom verifies that fact for the most part.
“They are big or at least bigger than us,” he noted.
The Saxons are led by an experienced core according to the coach. His three core players of setter Karin Ng and outside hitters Kristin McNeese and Ilyana Hernandez have all played together before high school. McNeese and Ng are three-year starters, while Hernandez is a two-year starter.
In the prior two seasons, the Saxons have been eliminated in the semifinals (2005) and quarterfinals (2006).
As for this year’s playoff run, Nag has noted the Saxons have started slowly in all of their playoff matches. That will have to change tonight if the Saxons hope to beat REV to school history.
“We’ve been able to bounce back (in our playoff games), but a slow start can’t happen when you get this far,” he said.

REV survives against Murrieta Valley...

If you liked touchdowns, Ted Runner Stadium was the place to be on Friday night.
There was a total of 15 touchdowns scored in Redlands East Valley's CIF Inland Division first-round game against Murrieta Valley. Fortunately, the Wildcats did one better than the Nighthawks in a thrilling 60-53 victory.
Senior running back Chris Polk shredded the Nighthawks' defense, rushing for 332 yards and four touchdowns.
His 51-yard touchdown run with 1:48 remaining, helped the Wildcats breath a sigh of relief, giving REV a 60-46 lead.
"He beat us," MV head coach Lance Neal said simply after the game.
Aside from all the points and all the yards (1,212 total), the game will also be remembered for the efforts of MV junior quarterback Lyle Negron, who toyed with the REV defense the entire night.
Negron passed for 346 yards, rushed for 203 yards and accounted for all seven Nighthawk touchdowns.
Now it's on to the quarterfinals for the Wildcats, where they will travel to Norco High School. The Cougars are the reigning Inland Division champions.

REV volleyball headed to the Big Game...

The Redlands East Valley girls' volleyball team gave the school a good dose of Girl Power on Tuesday night, advancing to the championship game of the CIF-Southern Section Division II-A playoffs after a hard-earned 25-12, 26-24, 23-25 and 25-20 semifinal victory over second-seeded South Torrance.
Tuesday's victory advances the Wildcats to the championship game against top-seeded North Torrance and is the first CIF Finals girls' volleyball showing for the school.
After a routine first-game victory, the turning point of the match came in the second game. Down 20-13 at one stretch, the Wildcats used a 10-2 run to take a 23-22 lead, ultimately pulling out a close victory.
The Wildcats nearly swept the match before a late rally fall short in the third game. But they took care of the business in the fourth game, controlling things throughout.
Heralded freshman Krista Vansant hammered home a match-high 25 kills, coming through with clutch kills at seemingly every stop. Sophomore setter Johnna Fouch continued her stellar postseason play, totaling 41 assists, 13 digs and three aces.
The championship game will be played at Cypress College on either Friday or Saturday. While no one knows for sure, some figure the Wildcats will play on Saturday since they compete in a higher CIF Division.
