REV performs strong at Mann Classic...
The Redlands East Valley wrestling team continued its strong start to the season, placing fifth overall out of over 50 teams at the Mann Classic Wrestling Tournament at Cal State Fullerton.
Overall, six wrestlers placed for the Wildcats, including three champions.
Standout freshman 103-pounder Chris Mecate remained undefeated, winning three matches by pinfall and one by decision. He pinned Loara's Erik Salomon in 2:31 to win the championship. So far, Mecate has first-place finishes in the Carter Invitational, West Coast Classic and the Mann Classic.
Seniors Ben Walters and Eric Rodriguez also claimed tournament wins in the 125 and 135-pound weight classes.
Walters recorded a decisive 16-3 victory over Warren's George Marsical and Rodriguez took a close 12-11 decision over Austin Ballard of Centennial Bakersfield.
Mecate and Walters were seeded first in their weight classes, while Rodriguez was seeded third.
Also placing for the Wildcats was 119-pounder Pedro Vazquez (seventh), 152-pounder Anthony Coronado (eighth) and 215-pounder Andrew Hudson (seventh).
REV finished with 154.5 team points over the two-day event. First place went to Laguna Hills, which finished with 349.5 points and had 13 wrestlers place.
