My son goes to a school on the corner of Birmingham campus. Anything happens to him. I may snap! Arrest these gang bangers and their associates! Patrol the schools before and after school. Better yet, install cameras and warning signs around the campus' 24/7 and nearby intersections. Then, at last, the immediate area around the school is a "safe zone".

I was just in Europe and was watching the news. They catch soooo many criminals with their surveillance cameras they have on the public streets. The cameras were on the buildings in a way that they looked like part of it. I don't see why we cannot do that around our schools and in places that are known to have gang activity or high crime rates.

The scumbags that were only in Los Angeles are now spreading over here in the Valley. I think that the communities need to get involved and take charge of there neighborhoods too and aid police in the war against gang-crime.

Mexican gang scum is everywhere, and there's nothing we can do about it until we bulid a 2,000 mile long wall between the US and godforsaken Mexico. We should declare war on these Mexican gang scumbags and shoot them all on sight.

Instead of having troops fight terrorists overseas. Have the troops take care of our local, spineless, bloodless terrorists 1st.

When I mentioned this article to my kid he said "They're 6 years too late. This has been going on since Middle School. Where have they been?"

So, what am I doing? We make concessions to the terrorists: My kid has never been allowed to wear red or blue clothes (gang colors). Other than that there isn't much a lone citizen can do except call my city officials daily and demand the repeal of Special Order 40.

I'm 61 years old and went to San Fernando high, then Monroe High, then Cleveland High during the early sixties and our local government has allowed this element to creep into our society here in the valley over the last twenty years and its primarily due to the Illegal alien influence. A percentage of them don't want an education they want to experience the Latino macho crap that comes with their culture from their filthy country.
You honestly think Mexico is a great place to live? I don't think so but we don't require them to assimilate into our society we just baby them and give them free citizenship. We must round up all illegals and their children and deport them back to their original county of origin no matter what color.. Our government must get tough in order to solve this maddening problem. Why should the good people who have live in the valley for years have to be so scared they can't even come out of their houses to do business..
These punks are everywhere and need to be rounded up and deported ASAP..

From the above comments it's clear that Birmingham parents and community members are extremely angry and fearful about the threats to their childrens' physical well being--and this concern is understandable. BUT, if only there was the same degree of concern about the risk to Birmingham students' futures due to woefully low reading levels, weak computing ability, and inadequate academic work habits. Yes, parents should be upset about violence on campus, but where are these same irate parents when kids need monitoring to insure that their homework is done? That they're in class every day? That they have regular access to books and newspapers and intelligent conversation? Do these same concerned and irate parents know their childrens' class schedules, talk with them about their classwork, know their friends, make contact with their teachers, talk with them about current events, take them to museums, discuss college plans, and create a safe and quiet place to study?
Yes, having a safer school and neighborhood will reduce the risk of harm to our kids' physical well being, but our students are at far greater risk to their futures if parents don't work with the schools to prepare students for productive and fulfilling post-secondary life.

To add to the story, there was also a drive by on Marlin Place (16937) in Van Nuys at 2:30 am on September 4th. Four shots were fired at the house. Complete gang bangers live there. I've been complaining to Greig Smith's office about the occupants running a car repair business out of the house but nothing has been done for six months. They also sell drugs and you see guys going up and down the street with blue backpacks. NOTHING IS DONE. These thugs are protected by our own liberal laws. They can't build the wall on the border fast enought for our sake.

I live close to these Birmingham shootings and I'm very concerned. These gang members rule the streets and the law enforcement has no control over these thugs. God forbid the police ever abuse these guys. We need better control over these gangs and they need to be shown who is boss. The police are so afraid of being politically correct, and are concerned for the criminal's rights. What rights do these criminals have? None. They should be treated like dogs and thrown in jail or suffer death. They complain about their treatment in jails. That is a joke. They should lock the key and let them starve.
The families of these children have no control over them, therefore it's society that needs to discipline these malcontents. The graffiti they leave on walls is sickening and they need to pay for this with either hard time or deportation.
Round them all up and their
families and send the problem back where they came from. I happen to have some latin blood in me, but I'm ashamed of what's happening. I wouldn't think twice of wasting one of these gangbangers to bring back the safer times in the Valley.

Went to school in Los Angeles in the 1950s. I wondered then what the city officials were going to do about the pachuko gangs. They did nothing. Now the national guard is needed. In ten more years the regular army will be needed. I don't see any hope for Los Angeles. I live 400 miles from there and thats not far enough.

I think that its too easy to get guns. I am an student from Europe, that doesnt happen over there. Be realistic and stop blaming inmigrants, your goverment sucks. If they want to catch them they do it. A freind of mine is a cop, he told me that they don't do that because if there is no drama... there is no job!!!
