Dream Act -- tough passage?

The "Dream Act," a federal bill that would grant a path to citizenship for undocumented students, is making its way through the Seante. Should students who arrived illegally in the United States as children be given a shot at citizenship?

Comments

No Dream Act! Go home and get help from your own government. We have enough to take care of with our own citizens. Stop jamming up our social programs.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION?
The opponents of the Dream Act are trying to spread the word that a new law in our country should be enacted. "All children of criminals should be tagged as criminals too whether they like it or not, applicable only to colored people. Is this how the present generation of Americans think? No wonder the international community looks upon us as arrogant and international meddlers. The illegal's children know nothing about their parents crime, why blame them? I myself is against illegal immigration but not how this anti's think. Some of the first generation immigrants who came here with their parents think they own the country too. What contribution have they made to our country?
To solve the problem once and for all, my opinion is to enact a law for the future based on the past, and an immediate solution for the present.
I believe this will work if congress will not be cowed by the racists, conservatives and inhuman populace.
For the past amnesty, forget what went wrong, no blaming who made this or that, just correct what is wrong. If congress can do this, then these could be a basis for a better law. The present problem could be solved by allowing those already here fix their legality, prove their worth, prove they are employed and or have already made roots here and pay what is due. There should be a deadline whereby all those who won't come forward will be prosecuted, jailed and deported. While the proces is ongoing, the borders should be totally closed, all new immigration applications stopped. After all is done, the department of LAbor can then determine how many guest workers will be allowed. This will be a form of check and balance of workers where everyone will be winners, except for the racists and haters of course.

NO!

And to you editors at the DN who are sitting there right now stroking your wispy little beards, pompously opining that any objection to this Act derives from racism or narrow self-interest, go screw yourselves. If you and your ilk were half as wise or educated as you think you are, this country wouldn't be the shithole you've helped turned it into.

Not the way this bill is designed, no. While I sympathize with some of these students, the bill does not eliminate the possibility of chain migration. We simply cannot reward their parents with legality, nor can we make it easier for those students to sponsor grandparents, older siblings, etc.

While I would be more supportive of this bill if it was only about military service (again with no chain migration capability), I cannot support the possibility of providing a free college education to millions of illegal aliens who have already been provided much by American taxpayers.

I also question two things:
1) would this would really be a one-time amnesty, and
2) would this encourage additional illegal immigration as previous amnesties have been proven to do?

Wayne- Right on and Exactly!

Ferdinand- Huh??? You make no sense... and your embarrissing yourself, but you may not understand that.

Jim Newland- LOL!!! LMFAO!!! Hahaha… PERFECT!!

Frankie- Your approaching the “Act” at face value, dig deeper and you'll see it has more of the same type of disingenous loopholes the “comprehensive” bill did. And to the questions 1) Nope, it didn’t in 1968(?) and it didn’t in 1986. 2) Yes, it did in 1968 and in 1986. If you read further into the subject, you’ll notice distinct jumps in illegal crossings whenever “amnestia” is mentioned in U.S.

DN- Who’s whose the genius that chose this cumbersome and clumsy form of sign on???

And one more thing... You'd think the impoverished foreign governments of these "kids" would be doing more to court their citizens back to their own countries, being American educated and all they'd be a much welcomed and needed help.

You'd think, but nah, that'd make too much sense.

Excuse me but most of these kids were brought here by parents and had absolutely no control of the situation. Most are completely Americanized.

They love this country and work harder than my native students. Many know more about our government and history than native students.
They can't go home. They are in essence American and by denying them the Dream Act. we have just wasted years of K-12 funding on them. They aren't going home. Some don't even speak Spanish. Do you realize that? It is a wise investment to enact the Dream Act and tough border enforcement at the same time.

NO AMNESTY FOR ANYONE UNTIL THE BORDERS ARE SECURE!!!!! I don't know what kind of IQ's we are electing. What part of NO are they having trouble understanding?

Kylie -

Excuse me [There’s no need for excuses. Are you referring to your tone?] but most of these kids were brought here by parents and had absolutely no control of the situation [Neither did most Americans, blame the parents]. Most are completely Americanized [False, they’re illegal]

They love this country [Kudos to them, I do too] and work harder than my native students [That’s a broad statement and not very becoming of an educator, or are there no Logic sections in the teaching credential test?]. Many know more about our government and history than native students [Then they should be very aware of our immigration laws and the historical context of how the lack of enforcement has led to their situation. That said in conjunction with their “love” of this country? They should be in complete agreement with the defeat of this “act”]

They can't go home [Like the man says, “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here”]. They are in essence American [In essence???] and by denying them the Dream Act. we have just wasted years of K-12 funding on them [Agreed! We wasted a lot of EVERYTHING overcrowded schools, emergency rooms, jail cells, welfare, etc. etc. They aren't going home [see top of paragraph]. Some don't even speak Spanish [That’s amazing, I had to take a foreign language in school. And you’re telling me that over all of these “wasted years of K-12 funding” some of them didn’t even bother/manage to learn the language of they’re native land? Sad]. Do you realize that? [Do you?] It is a wise investment to enact the Dream Act and tough border enforcement at the same time. [Enforcement FIRST IS the wise investment, your path has been tried. It failed and led us to where we are today. True compassion is through Enforcement]

Wow you are angry and gave no logical answers...face facts. They are Americans in fact due to being here since they were infants. If you were in their shoes would YOU go home to the country your parents brought you from?
And yes, excuse me but enforcement was NOT tried. A law was passed and not enforced. So both can be done simoultaneously. They are here and they are not leaving. We might as well have a well educated populace for the future. It makes good sense.
If they have been here since they are two or three, they have no understanding of "illegal." They have no memory of their native country. By the way, if your house is sitting on Indian territory that was cheated from the Indians since most treaties were broken, would you be willing to vacate that land and give it back to its "legal" residents?

Kylie-

Wow you are angry and gave no logical answers...face facts [Actually, I wouldn’t quite put it as “angry”, but for arguments sake let’s say YES, and rightfully so. And to the “no logical answers” statement, I suggest you RE-READ my arguments. And this is what my hard earned tax dollars go for?] They are Americans in fact due to being here since they were infants [RE-READ the 14th Amendment (? That should be it, as well as its precedents; I can go on but won’t – look it up yourself. And now all of the Dream Act students were born here???]. If you were in their shoes would YOU go home to the country your parents brought you from? [Would I want to? Of course not, but as children, we are all forced to do things we do not like. If the parents truly loved their children, they’d take their kids home and wait patiently and lawfully for they’re chance to enter legally – LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD. South America isn’t the Sudan]

And yes, excuse me but enforcement was NOT tried [Glad we could agree on something, see no anger there ]. A law was passed and not enforced. So both can be done simoultaneously [Huh???, which part of this argument are you missing?]. They are here and they are not leaving [see first paragraph of earlier response, see also argument in current missive]. We might as well have a well educated populace for the future. It makes good sense. [I bet you didn’t go to an Ivy League school, or even a UC save USCB or Berkeley. Your making a 9 year old’s statement. Not enough room to explain it to you here]
If they have been here since they are two or three, they have no understanding of "illegal." They have no memory of their native country. [Whose fault is that? Two examples: parents and teachers. And what happened to, “many know more about our government and history than native students”???] By the way, if your house is sitting on Indian territory that was cheated from the Indians since most treaties were broken, would you be willing to vacate that land and give it back to its "legal" residents? [PLEASE READ MORE HISTORY, YOUR EMBARRISSING NOT ONLY YOURSELF, but your fellow facilitators] [I can’t believe my tax dollars are going to this kind of crap! Now that is something to be angry for  ] [Now everyone is an Indian? I guess if we we’re to all trace our roots back to our original origins, that would be from some woman in Africa, correct? Nevermind, time is too short and space is too limited to explain this to you here…

Damn! My Tax Dollars At Work!!! I knew I deserved a bigger refund.

Here's a new angle that most of you haven't considered.

Do you depend on oil to maintain your way of life? If so read on.

-

The US peaked in production of oil way back ini 1970 when our population was only 200 million people. Fast forward 37 years and population just surpassed 300 million but low and behold domestic oil production has fallen to 5.0 million barrels per day. US demand in 1970 was about 16 million barrels per day so we had to import about 6 million barrels per day to make up the difference. Now our demand is up to 22 million barrels per day so we have to import 17 million per day to quench our oil thirst. Now doing some simple math tells you that each new American creates demand of 27 barrels of oil per year. The US recently granted citizenship to some 7,000 Iraqis that assisted with the war effort. Did anybody plan for the additional 190,000 barrels per year needed to support them? Ummm. I don't think so. We are facing a true crisis of epic proportions yet the best response we muster is to complain the oil companies are gouging. Brace yourselves because all hell is going to break loose and completely alter your future plans as they relate to oil consumption.

AF,
It is our fault since we did not stop the President by getting out in the street the way the Spaniards did to change their government. The bottom line is that most Americans got swept up in the superficial nationalism after 9-1-1 and you couldn't even question the president's actions or you were considered a traitor. Americans drive gas guzzling cars they don't need and we invaded a country that had nothing to do with 911 for oil. We have also created a refugee crisis of epic proportions in Iraq and instead of taking those people in as we morally should do for causing the problem ,Norway is taking them in. And by the way, how did our oil get under THEIR sand??? The US is in trouble because it believes the world's resources belong to itself and behaves in an arrogant fashion toward other countries. We are extremely wasteful in our consumption of resources.
Yes, we have a resource problem, and should limit immigration. But you can't look the other way for 20 years, not enforce existing laws and then tell an 18 or 20 year old, "Sorry it has been nice using you and your parents for cheap labor, now get out." What we can do is limit the Dream Act to those who were brought here as children, period. That is humane and it is common sense. We put a limit on who it excludes for example, the day it is passed it only includes immigrant children physically in the US as of the previous day, and no parents or other relatives. It makes sense.

And I went to a CSU university where I received an excellent education from teachers who mostly came from Ivy League schools but felt they had more chance to actually teach, rather than research at the CSU.

And no, I am not embarrassing myself.

The US broke most treaties with Native Americans and the original land in California originally allocated to natives has shrunk from the original agreement.

How's this for a DREAM ACT: give amnesty to all hispanic illegals(nobody really cares about all those others anyway. RIGHT?)for an eight hour period (midnight to 8AM)on New Years day. When they awake to a major hangover, then they will finally know how their selfish demands make the rest of us feel.

Yes! After all, this country was founded on people entering. Perhaps instead pf spending money on Bush's war we should invest in America and making it a better place to come to by all immigrants. If we can civilize enough people here, they may carry the message to their homeland and we will not have to start wars to try to save innocent people from themselves.
