Hadas Winnick, a Canoga Park High School Math teacher was apparently slain by her son Jesse Wiinick at her Calabasas home. If you knew the family, share your memories of Mrs. Winnick or any thoughts on the case.

I knew Hadas and her two children when she taught at Millikan Middle School. What a violent and tragic end to her life. Rest in Peace, Hadas
I my what can I say.. Wow I remember that I had her the first time she came to Canoga during the summer. Ms.Winnick had always time for her student. I was some what close to her, we shared many laughs together, in fact sometimes we would laugh too much. I will never forget our knitting club, with spontaneous ideas and loud acts that would occur during our time together.

This news has changed my life and its so hard to believe how a wonderful person like Mrs.Winnick has left us.She was my algebra teacher and thanks to her me and my friend Cynthia passed. She was very strict but she teached like a real teacher should.Outside of class she was the coolest teacher ever. She cared about her students and knew each and every one of them.Thank you for being one of the best teachers in Canoga Park High School. We will always remember you Mrs. Winnick!
For those who never met Hadas Winick, you really missed knowing an incredible woman. I met Hadas as a new teacher at Mulholland Middle School, where she took me under her wing, offering me advice and tips on managing my students. Hadas was high energy, outgoing, and full of life. While she was a strict teacher, her love of youth and teaching seeped through her pores, overriding any possible confusion that students might have of her intent. She loved each one of them and wanted them to succeed. You know, I can’t even begin to count the times that Hadas was there for me - to listen to me banter about my mundane life, pick me up when I was stranded with car issues – just be there for me . . . Example, a few months ago I was really feeling blue. I called Hadas to chat because she always knew what to say. About five minutes into our conversation she excused herself, saying that she would call me back in a few minutes. Fifteen minutes later, Hadas was on my doorstep to take me to dinner. Just like that. She saw a friend having a hard time and she wanted to help. Hadas was selfless, loving, open, honest – everything that a person would want in a friend. I am devastated by her departure, but her spirit will live on with the countless number of youth and adults whose lives she touched.
“Dassi” I love you and will miss you. I will cherish the time that we shared as friends, and will keep your countless words of advice close to my heart forever. The world has lost a very special person.
THE FIRST TIME I MET MS. WINNICK WAS BACK AT MULHOLLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL WHEN I WAS A 6TH GRADER. SHE WAS THE BEST TEACHER EVER! SHE KNEW HOW TO GIVE US ALL ADVICE AND HELPED US OUT WHENEVER WE NEEDED HER. SHE WAS MORE THEN A TEACHER TO ME, SHE WAS A PERSON WHO THOUGHT ME LIFE LESSONS WHICH I STILL REMEMBER. I HONESTLY AND TRULY MISS HER, AND I WILL ALWAYS HAVE HER IN MY HEART, AND I KNOW THAT SO MANY OTHER OF HER STUDENTS WILL TOO
I've met Hadas before. She can be a nice person. She appeared to be a very dedicated, no-nonsense teacher. What people AREN'T saying about her is that she is very condescending towards others. She is also a busybody and tends to stick her nose in where she's not needed. She is opinionated, unapologetic. You can only say so much before you begin to alienate those around you, and the ones who tell you so many positives about her...well, they're not letting you know what a brutal personality she has. She may be a respected teacher, but endeared is another issue.
No one deserves to die a violent death. But there are more complicated circumstances with this family than meets the eye.
I wouldn't be surprised if she voiced her displeasures about her son in front of him so much to the point where he snapped.
Ask those who REALLY know the family well. She's not the typical loving, supportive mother.
SKT--You say she was opinionated...may be so, I didn't know her, but I know people who did and they are people that loved her very much and miss her. Not to mention the many, many loving notes written in her memory proving that she was a loving and caring person.
But you SKT, you're heartless!! And your malicious post about this poor woman only proves it. Only her son knows why he committed such a heinous act against his own mother, but I suspect that drug abuse is the main cause of his altered and psychotic behaviour, probably meth, because how else can you explain such an atrocity. As a mom myself, I know the heartache and pain of seeing your once loving, generous and intelligent child get into drugs and turn into a heartless stranger and not know how to help him except by confronting him with tough love, and loving him until the last breath even if he didn't deserve it!
It doesn't matter if Hadas was one of those mothers who "suck her head in the sand" everytime her child did something wrong, or if Hadas was a loving, caring mother. NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING justifies Jesse doing what he did. NOTHING. Jesse needed help for years and years, and no matter how hard Hadas tried to help her only son, he rebelled. There is only so much a parent can do, and you always want the best for your children. Unfortunately, when he became an adult he continued to make the choice not to get help when he needed it. It is absolutely disturbing that he would resort to this form of rebelling; it makes me sick. All that aside, my heart goes out to Amy who is an amazing young woman and who is very alone right now (literally). My prayers are with her.
In response to that comment about Hadas being invasive and nosy...maybe she had her moments, but we all do....and what you need to realize is that no matter what Hadas said, or how many prying questions she'd ask, SHE ALWAYS MEANT WELL. And, I speak from experience when I say that no matter what she said, or did, she'd be the FIRST PERSON there if you needed something-she was a TRUE friend.
I didn't know Ms. Winnick very well but she was an incredible teacher. I had her once as a substitute and she was the nicest sub I ever had. She always had a smile everywhere she'd go and always seemed so happy. She will be missed, but we will always keep a special place for her in our hearts.
When you need someone to talk to, Hadas was there. When you need someone to laugh with, Hadas was there. When you need someone to advise you , Hadas was there. When you need someone to help you, Hadas was there. I cherish and love everything about her. She was a devoted teacher, but a devoted parent first. I remember when she was pregnant with Jesse then Amy. She was filled with joy. Her parenting skills were from the theory of 'Tough Love'- clear expectations and tons of support as well as HONESTY. Jesse must have been out of his mind.
SKT, it never ceases to amaze me how people hide behind message boards. I doubt you would say those things were we all standing in a room together. Who, after a person was brutally murdered, would be so harsh? What purpose does it serve to be so ... "condescending" . . . "stick your nose where it's not wanted" . . . "be opinionated" . . . "unapologetic" . . . "alienating" . . . "brutal" . . . All the words you used to describe Hadas, mind you – she is not here to defend herself, are the things you just showed yourself to be on this page. How trite and cold you are. I suppose you feel you have gained something by posting such a negative response. I suppose you believe that YOUR TRUTH is everyone’s truth. Understand (and I don’t know how old you are – but I do see your maturity level) that life and how you accept people is all based on perspective. From your perspective, you obviously found Hadas a challenge to know. That's YOU. Don't dare try to taint other people with your negativity. I can only hope, that when you leave this earth, people will speak/remember you with love, and not vent personal issues as you have done on this page.
Lillyheart...you're just making assumptions. The son has a mental condition. He is bipolar. He is on prescribed medication. Granted, mixing that with recreational drugs can lead to unknown mental and physical reactions. This may have lead to the cause of the murder.
But to say I'm heartless for being to for others to say that's MY TRUTH, well, let it be it. That's what I know about her and from my experiences with her. Like PaulaG, people hide behind their daily facade by refusing to acknowledge the negativities each person is faulted with. Granted, if I were alone with Hadas, I would tell the exact same things in front of her face.
However, like everyone else, we don't generally tell a person his or her faults in front of others just to be respectful, to not be judged by others as being cruel and mean-spirited. But in reality, that's human nature. If no one talks badly about others behind their backs, then the word "gossip" would never be a part of any language in the world.
Face reality people, we're all 2-faced, perky and nice outside, bitchy and cruel on the inside.
I doubt anyone will read this since it's "old news" at this point - but it will never be old news to me. This was my family. Jesse and my mom were my best friends. Because of his savage, idiotic, selfish, disgusting act of violence, I no longer have either of them. There is no excuse. My mom was not brutal. Opinionated, yes. But perhaps the fact that Jesse told her she was fat, ugly, worthless, pathetic, deserved to die, was the reason she was so sad? Can you imagine having to go through that every day, whenever Jesse had a bad day or just felt like dumping on her? She was a beautiful woman, dedicated beyond belief to her children, students, and friends. She was the best mother she could have ever been. I wake up missing her more and more each day, but also thank God more and more each day for the time I did get to spend with her. So, to you, SKT - I pity your close-minded, ignorant views. And to everyone else, especially Paula, thank you. Mom and I love you dearly.
