Trading your 818 for a 747
With the Valley running out of phone numbers, the California Public Utilities Commission has proposed adding a "747" area code to a region where the 818 area code has virtually become a symbol of its unique identity. Are you 818-4-LIFE, or are you willing to trade for a 747? If the plan comes to fruition, should existing numbers be split, or only new numbers assigned the 747 area code?

I have lived the the valley my whole life and have seen a GREAT deal of change but now just like everywhere else in the city there are TOO MANY PEOPLE and we are in danger of losing one of the few things that set us apart as the Valley. I say instead deport all the illegals that use up our 818 phone numbers then we may not have to change to a new area code

One innovative way to solve this problem would be for cell and land line phone numbers to merge into one. We still have a land line for 911 purposes (we have 2 little ones at home). Why cant' my home number revert to my cell # when I'm on the road and vice versa?

Once again, ANOTHER reason do deport ALL the friggin illegals. When, oh WHEN LA are you going to see the writing on the wall? Crowed fwys, increase in gangs, long lines no matter where we go.. sigh.. and now we lose 818. Pathetic

I agree, stop giving 818 numbers to the ones that not here legal and we will have all the 818 we need for the people that is legal.

Tell the Public Utilities Commission to go and PUC themselves.
Thanks

This first:
AGAIN, you left off the "Comment" section for Letters to the Editor.
So, again, I'll use this unrelated space to comment: Double ditto to Bill Fleming of Burbank. All you left out was Bush the self-proclaimed, self-enacting war, signing statement, presidential directive prez.
818: It's a scam. I don't believe for one minute the phone company is running out of 818 numbers; they're hoarding them for some reason, like they're super valuable to businesses.
All 818 cell phone numbers should get a new area code.
I want my 818 and don't want to give it up to anyone for any reason.

Like most I agree, let us keep our 818 4-life and get rid of the illegals causing trouble in our 818.

I went through this problem last summer when the 310 area code was overlayed with the 424 codes and it was a huge pain in the rear end. We don't really have a choice in the matter--but maybe we all should be willing to trade off our 818 on our cell phones for 747 and leave the 818 for landlines and businesses. I'm willing to do that. If there truely are no more numbers to assign. But between the phone companies hoarding numbers to prevent competition from gaining the upper hand and those who are here in the States illegally--we have a more serious issue at hand than running out of phone numbers. And it's time the residents of the Valley stand up for themselves and stop allowing the "westside" to govern our way of life.

Tough. We had to deal with it on the westside, so that now if I want to call my office of friends in the same area code of 310, I still have to dial 1 310 first. And to call someone a couple of streets over if they live east of La Cienega, I have to call 323. Someone I know moved two blocks and had to change all their numbers, a real pain. It seams a dumb way to handle the westside breakup, instread of doing it north to south, since Watts is still 310 but is so much further away. The best the Valley can hope for is a less stupid and arbitrary split than we got.

And by the way, another fear when we had to split 310 was that property values would go down for home barely east of La Cienega, in Beverly Hills and the Hollywood Hills most of all, where homes are very expensive. Don't think that happened very much, but there is definitely a snob value to having the 310, and a raised eye when people give 323 as their area code. The friend who moved two blocks east and had to change all numbers hates it as do most people. There are some people who won't move east of La Cienega as a result.
Frankly I don't think there's any snob value to the 818 to begin with, you guys have less to lose. But if there might be, have your realtors weigh in on this.

Why don't they leave things alone. If it ain't broke don't fix it.Nuff said.!

All 818 numbers should stay "as is"...
Let the "new" numbers get the "new area code!"
Why should those who have had 818 numbers for years, be inconvenienced just because their are way too many new users?

Why not change and issue all fax machines the 747 code? That should free up tens of thousands of 818 numbers.

ITS JUST A *@$! NUMBER. THE VALLEY IS HUGE IT SHOULD BE ITS OWN CITY. THE SFV IS GOING TO KEEP GETTING WORST IF YOU KEEP THINKING OF IT AS A SUBURB AND BLAMING EVERYTHING ON IMMIGRANTS.

The change in fax number area codes to 747 is brilliant!
As for the rest of these blogs, I am completely and utterly appaled by the ignorance. Bashing on illegal immigrants is pathetic and unproductive. Why don't you people travel, become cultured, gain some insight and learn about the deeper social & economic issues involved, before making judgement calls on another culture.

I'd like to keep my 818 land line number, since so many people have it.
I'd be willing to change my 818 cell phone number to 747.
If I were a business not a person I'd probably feel differently.

I agree...QUIT giving out the 818 area codes to everyone coming into the Valley..They should have to earn it..No wannabee's or illegals, mercy me what's happening to our country anyhow? If anything they should assign 747 to new customers and cellphones. Businesses in the Valley should have 818 area codes or how will we know where they're located? After all we do have more to be concerned about in the world besides a new area code, what about our soldiers fighting for our freedom and global warming. Hello, is anyone listening??

I worked for the phone company in the 80s and was involved in the "new" 818 area code split from the 213. Trust me, it WASN'T that big a deal! I think the split would be awesome. A 747 belongs in the valley.
