Master Jimmy Kim heads team that brings home two silver medals
The U.S. National Taekwondo Poomsae Team turned in its best medal performance ever by winning two silver medals at the 4th WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships held in Cairo, Egypt November 30th to December 2nd 2009.
Head Coach Master Jimmy Kim, President of Jimmy Kim's Taekwondo Center, Laguna Niguel and Director of Oriental Moo-Do School, Cerritos lead a team of 27 athletes and coaches to participate in the event. "This was our strongest showing ever and our worldwide competitors have realized the US is a serious contender at the Taekwondo Poomsae World Championship level", said Master Kim.
The three-day championships, which took place at the Cairo Stadium, attracted a total of 564 athletes from a record 59 countries. Korea won nine gold medals and one silver to clinch the overall title of the championships, followed by Vietnam with two golds, one silver and three bronzes.
The US silver medals were won by Ms. Akiko Reyes (Chatsworth CA) and Master Dure Chang (Anchorage, AK). The US team was comprised from athletes from all across the nation. The win gives Chang her third world championship medal, adding to her 2007 silver medal and 2008 silver medal.
The event also served as an opportunity for Team USA to serve as goodwill sports ambassadors with the other participating nations. On the first day of the trip, the team received a special briefing from the Cultural Affairs department of the US Embassy in Cairo which provided valuable insight into local culture and traditions of Egypt.
The Oriental Moo-Do School in Cerritos has a rich history of champions and has been serving the community for over 38 years headed by Grandmaster Chan Yong Kim. Under the guidance of his father Grandmaster Kim, Master Jimmy Kim won the first Taekwondo Olympic Gold medal for the US at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. The vision of Grandmaster Kim is to develop Life's Champions through the sport of Taekwondo.
Maybe the children there should help them?
When it became knowledge at McKinley Elementary, that some of our students were wearing shoes that were too tight causing them to limp through recess, I remembered the generous hearts of the parents at my previous school, Twain Elementary.
The recession has touched us all and I can vividly remember how fast my own three boys used to outgrow their shoes, and the expense of having to constantly replace them.
Principal Ellen Ryan graciously allowed me to print a request in the Twain school newspaper asking parents if they could donate any outgrown gently used shoes from their children's closet. Third grade teacher, Mary Campbell, agreed to be my contact person, making it easy to drop the shoes off in her room.
The response has been overwhelming. During the first week over 70 pairs of shoes were donated, many of them brand new with the tags still on. Along with the shoes were also sacks of uniforms that we of course could also use. I am still getting calls from Ms. Campbell to come over to make a pick-up. We are so grateful to our generous friends at Twain and truly appreciate each and every pair that has been donated.
It really does take a village.

This is my husband Mike and our three children: Marley, 3, and twins Micah and Maddox, 2. Mike enjoys spending Thursdays at home with the children on his day off. I imagine that this is one of their favorite days of the week because he always takes them out to do something fun. They enjoy going to the park, going out to eat, or as in the photo, playing outside and getting treats from the ice cream truck.Lima Harris

On July 6, 2009, my family and I left Long Beach, Calif., for a two year adventure to Johannesburg, South Africa. Prior to arriving in South Africa, we had a three day layover in London. In London, we went on a double decker bus, rode in many taxis, went on the Thymes River and stopped off at the Tower of London. I also went to Kensington Palace and my mom told me all about Princess Diana. We also went on the London Eye, in which, you get a bird's eye view of the city. It was amazing. I saw Big Ben, the Parliament, and Westminster Abby. The best part of London was getting caught in the biggest hail and rainstorm I have ever witnessed. We were soaked to the bone! South Africa has been beautiful so far. We live in Dainfern in northern Johannesburg and have enjoyed meeting some new friends and my new home. I will attend the American International School of Johannesburg in August and will be starting the 3rd grade. I had to say goodbye to a lot of my great friends and family members, but I know my family and I are still together. I would like to say hello to all my friends (Nathan, Seth, Caden, Billy and Carlos) and teachers (Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Seaton and Ms. Hubbs) from Mark Twain Elementary. I would also like to say hello to the Shipley family, Ozella family, Ray family, the Mestrandrea family and to my grandma and Poppi Piechota and my Nana and Poppa Donovan. I miss you all, but look forward to seeing you in December. I love you! Ethan
