When it became knowledge at McKinley Elementary, that some of our students were wearing shoes that were too tight causing them to limp through recess, I remembered the generous hearts of the parents at my previous school, Twain Elementary.
The recession has touched us all and I can vividly remember how fast my own three boys used to outgrow their shoes, and the expense of having to constantly replace them.
Principal Ellen Ryan graciously allowed me to print a request in the Twain school newspaper asking parents if they could donate any outgrown gently used shoes from their children's closet. Third grade teacher, Mary Campbell, agreed to be my contact person, making it easy to drop the shoes off in her room.
The response has been overwhelming. During the first week over 70 pairs of shoes were donated, many of them brand new with the tags still on. Along with the shoes were also sacks of uniforms that we of course could also use. I am still getting calls from Ms. Campbell to come over to make a pick-up. We are so grateful to our generous friends at Twain and truly appreciate each and every pair that has been donated.
It really does take a village.
