This one was taken near 7th Street and Cherry Avenue. There were mailboxes and giant boulders scattered in the streets! The water was up really high here, everyone was trying to drive very cautiously. You can even see how far up the water is to the parked cars! Long Beach had pretty much turned into a river that day.

pn01-rprain6.JPGI had rolled down the car window to take this one going east toward the Traffic Circle on Los Coyotes Diagonal. The water had flooded the entire street, and if a car went by too fast, the water would spray up OVER our car!

Remembering When

pn25-rpanniv1.jpgEvelyn Robertson attended her Sunday School Beach Party and was swept off her feet by Royce Ehle. Today they still hold hands, are still very much in love and are celebrating 70 years of marriage.
The First Pentecostal Church at 10th St. and California Avenue, in Long Beach was having a beach party, Royce spotted a beautiful young lady trying to get sand off her feet, so he swept her off her feet, and carried her down to the water and back. The rest is music.
Evelyn graduated from Poly High School Jan 25, 1940. Two days later she and Royce were married by Brother Jeffery "behind Hansen's Market" in her aunt and uncle's home, Ruth and Ellis Robertson.
Royce worked for Frank Bros. Furniture on 4th Street delivering furniture making $16 a week.
They celebrated Sunday January 24.
Their original cake top will again adorn their anniversary cake, surrounded by family and many friends. One friend Marshall Julian, a former city manger of Lakewood, went to kindergarten with Royce. Gene Miller, a comedian, formerly of Long Beach, will give a toast and entertain in his usually jocular style. Their daughter Sharon will be singing their special song: Irving Berlins' "Always."
Royce and Evelyn say always "talking things over" is the key to a happy marriage. They have lived in Long Beach their entire married life.

The Coolest Dad

Our dad, Daniel Lock, is a wonderful and loving father. He took a day off from work to go on a field trip to the La Brea Tar Pits. He drove all the way into Los Angeles all by himself while I was on the yellow school bus from Long Beach. He did that just for me. My teacher, Mr. King at Burcham K- 8 School was very happy that my dad drove all that way to help us. My dad made a super treasure chest for my sister Khaileen's kindergarten teacher last year. He is an adoring man that loves his family very much. My dad came to my school for the talent show and dance performance after a long day at work.

Book Drive Benefits Local Children

| | Comments (1) |
pn25-rpgoodkids.jpgOn October 29, 2009 the Fire Dragon troop of Camp Fire Long Beach Area Council came to Comprehensive Child Development with dozens of books for the preschool children at the Pacific Avenue Child Development Center. They are a troop of 10 boys who are all in 2nd grade at Longfellow Elementary School, in their third year together. The troop began when the boys were in Kindergarten. The book drive was part of the "Kiniya" service project.  The boys are: Casey, Ben, Jacob, Willem, Raphael, Nathan, Jack, Aidan, Owen and Gabriel.  The troop leaders are Cynthia DeCure and Nora Mueller. The boys collected then delivered the books and then divided up and went to all four classrooms and each troop member read a book to the children, who sat in rapt attention in a circle at their feet.
Comprehensive Child Development, Inc. (CCD) is a nonprofit organization providing high quality early childhood education for the preschool children of low-income working parents in the greater Long Beach area. Being primarily state funded, there is always a need to find ways to supplement classroom supplies and materials because of the gap in funding between state contracts and the actual cost of early childhood education. Many of these families have no money to buy books to read with their children. The reading experience is very important for future success as they enter into the school system. The families of CCD are very grateful to the boys of the Fire Dragon Troop. They are going to be great future leaders. For more information about CCD, go to www.ccdlb.org.

Tyler Stibal, age 8, of Lakewood flew by himself to Reno to visit his cousins last summer. He also took a tour of the California State Capitol with his parents, then went to San Francisco. He liked the tour of Alcatraz the best, but we forgot to bring the Press-Telegram there. pn18-rpbirth1.JPG

My wife of 63 years turned 80-years-old on Jan. 12. The mother of three very special children. One, a paralyzed Vietnam veteran, our youngest, a 21-year Army flight medic, now retired and our daughter, whose involved in space technology with Vultee, Northrup and Douglas. She was great with horses and dogs as well as a full-time wife. There are not enough words to describe how much of a good person, cook, and mother she has been over the years. I was never able to provide all that she deserved but we had fun involved in Quarter Midget Racing, off-roading with some of the best people I ever known, spending so many weekends camping in the desert and mountains and visiting places of interest. Those of us lucky enough to have a wife like mine know just what I am talking about. Betty Eleanor Lee / Bays graduated from Jordan High in 1947. Below is then 17 year old Betty.

65 years and counting...

| | Comments (0) |
pn18-rpanniv1.jpgThe sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Berch and Becky Parker would like to honor them in celebration of their 65 years of marriage.
A young handsome pilot in his Navy uniform and a beautiful Florida girl in a gorgeous lavender suit were joined together on December 12, 1945. They moved from Florida to California soon after they took their vows in a simple civil service.
The pilot became a tool design engineer and the beautiful girl became a wife and mother to a growing family. They saved their money to buy a house. They worked hard to provide for their family. The mother handmade most of the clothes, the father became a VERY handy man. No dinners out, no babysitters, no extras.
They were finally able to buy a house in the Los Altos area of Long Beach. The kids kept coming for the next 20 years. At final count there were ten; and soon after came the first grandchild. All through the years, due to great budgeting, the couple managed to take the children across the country on the most fantastic camping road trips. What fun we had, getting rained on, cooking outside, roughing it with no tent, and breaking in to a locked campground.
The couple still lives in that house. They have seen a lot of changes in the world and reflected in the lives of their children.
At this juncture, there are nine kids (having lost the eldest daughter to cancer), sixteen (16) grandchildren, and seven (7) great-grandchildren. We are so proud to be the descendants of these two hardworking, loving, generous human beings. They have taught us so much; from, how to ride a bike to patching up a scrape; from car repair to bread baking; from math to sewing; from friendship to love.
We adore and honor them, today and always.

They will be the 2010 March of Dimes Ambassador family for University of California Irvine Medical Center. A picture of them will be on one of the UCI ambulances. A Bellflower Beat

pn18-rpgoodkids.JPG
The Bellflower High Marching Band is comprised of only 38 members and a handful of parent supporters. Their band director, Mr. Omar Vidana, has only been at the helm for a year and a half. Last year they did not make either of the state championships. This year has been a very different story. These kids have worked their very hardest to turn this band around and that they have done indeed. They have competed in a total of 10 field shows during the 2009 marching season and have won eight first places and two second places. They also won first place at the Southern California Judging Association Field Show Competition November 21 to earn the title California State Band Champion. The Bellflower High Marching Band beat out five other bands in Division 1, from around the state. They competed in the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Associations 2009 field championships against 11 other schools at Warren High in Downey and took home the 3rd place bronze medal. We are very proud of both bands. They both should get the recognition that they have earned.

This is the only picture I have of both Jim Jr. and I in the same photo. I built the first car in 1954 and it was stolen from our station in North Long Beach in Nov. of 1957. The car pictured is the second car I built. It only ran at Auction City where all our races were televised on Channel 5 every Saturday for several weeks.
Sometimes we went to other tracks, as far away as Santa Maria and we were featured on the Mickey Mouse Newsreel in our first year at the Little Gilmore track in Paramount. Those were great times and the sport is now a nation wide, as well as a world wide family sport....but much more expensive now !! Jimmie attended Lincoln Elementary School in Paramount and Sutter Elementary later. Jim was attending Jordan when he joined the Army and volunteered for Viet Nam in 1969 - 1971.

THE HERE'S THE REST OF THE STORY:

Jeannie and Bud's Love Story

On September 10, 2007, I went to a dance at El Dorado Park for seniors and asked a lady to dance with me. I asked her name and she said Wanda. She asked me my name and I said Neal. She looked a little like Wanda Cloud, a girl I had gone to school with in Oklahoma from 2nd grade through high school so I asked her what her maiden name was and she said Coker. She asked me my last name and I said Jones. The name Wanda Coker didn't register with me and Neal Jones didn't register with her.
Wanda said I had a look on my face as if I might have known some Coker's and she asked me if I did and I said yes, that I had known some in San Pedro. She named two other families and asked if they were the ones and I said no. I said that I had know a man who had two daughters, one name Jeannie and the other daughter was married to a man named Leonard and they lived on 22nd Street. Wanda stopped on the dance floor and said, 'Oh my God, that's me!' She took a closer look at me and said "Bud!" That was the name she had known me by and I said yes.
Jeannie was the first girl that I dated when I go out of the Navy and the first girl that I ever loved. My father and I owned a Richfield Gas Station on 7th and Gaffey and her father owned the Olympic Gas Station next door on 8th and Gaffey. That's how we met 61 years ago. I would have married her 61 years ago in 1946 but she was too young, 15, and still in high school.
I was surprised that she still had pictures of us camping in Big Bear, CA. with our families and also pictures of us at the gas stations.
We have been together every since we met on September 10, 2007 and are surprised how much alike we are and how well we get along. We have taken five wonderful trips together with no problems and planned a 6th trip to Hawaii on Pearl Harbor Day December 2009, as I was on the USS West Virginia when she was sunk on December 7, 1941.
I am now 85-years-old and she is 78-years-old. We stay active. We do volunteer work for AARP, TCE tax program and we go dancing at least once a week.
How many people get a second chance with their first love after 61 years?

A Holi-Day of Giving

pn04-rpholiday.jpg
For the second year, Temple Israel of Long Beach has provided a free Christmas dinner at the Drop-in Center based at the First Congregational Church, complete with hot turkey and accompanied by all the usual "fixings" for those Long Beach residents who are facing severe hardships and homelessness. The dinner has evolved from last year's "peanut butter and jelly sandwiches plus drinks," said temple executive director Steve Bascove, to now a full fledged dinner of turkey, with stuffing, gravy, vegetables, desserts and beverages, all due to additional funds donated by temple members and donations of food.
More than 100 Temple Israel volunteers, as well as some students from Cal State Long Beach and a large number of teens, gave their time in this charitable effort to serve more than 400 guests. Some guests arrived with their children and one brought his guitar to entertain at this friendly and heart-warming Christmas event.
Stephanie Bussi and Suzanne Brodsly chaired the event which has now become "a tradition" for the Temple, said Bussi.

Dedication and Thanks to a beloved Aunt

| | Comments (4) |
pn28-rpitem.jpg
This is a dedication and insight of the life of my 107 year-old Aunt Ardlean Butler. Born January 1902 to the union of a Native American Indian Mother (tribe Blackfoot & Choctaw) and an African Slave Father: Sarah & Kintch Hunter in DeKalb, Texas. She is the second child born in a family. She had one which consisted of a older brother, Bob Hunter, four sisters; Pankie Williams, Willie Mae Williams, Nancy Sue Burris, and Corine Alberty my grandmother, at age 96 all of them have passed on. She recently lost her only daughter, Mattie B. Brown, in October 2009. She was 88. For many years, her my Aunt's daughter saw to her care in Los Angeles, CA.
My Aunt Ardlean lived in the era before Oklahoma became a state and was known as Oklahoma Territory. Even the Model T Ford Car wasn't invented. Even at her age, her memory is in tact. She is not afflicted with Alzheimer and can recognize those around her and can recognized her various five generations of nieces, nephews and cousins. She can remember things she saw and experienced growing up. She has a great love of education and deeply participates in church activities. She passes on stories to those who have the good sense to listen. I just want to thank you Auntie for the knowledge you passed down to me. I always enjoyed your sense of humor and your showing me how to correctly bake a chicken. Know that members of your family are going to take care of you and support you now that cousin Mattie B. has gone home to "Father".
Your loving namesake,

Their parents thought it would be the perfect time to remind them that there are others less fortunate. The boys decided to take a generous portion of their gift certificates and shop for children sponsored by We Care in Los Alamitos. Mrs. Maney and Mrs. Mejia-Espinosa took the boys shopping and were touched by how excited the boys were to buy gifts for children they did not know. The boys look forward to helping those less fortunate in the near future by volunteering their time and giving to organizations like We Care.

Bellflower Elementary Ensemble

I had the privilege of hearing our daughter, Claire Wood, and 75 others perform Thursday night at the Bellflower Civic Auditorium. The show was amazing. She sings with a group known as the Bellflower Elementary Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Brian Dennis. The Elementary Ensemble is a gem within the Bellflower Unified School District. It is an ensemble group comprised of 5th and 6th graders selected from the 11 elementary schools of the Bellflower district. The group includes 64 singers as well as 11 dancers. In the last two weeks, the Ensemble has performed for various shows including the Bellflower Chamber of Commerce, the Bellflower Women's Club, their annual Christmas Concert and at Knott's Berry Farm. Many more concerts are scheduled for the new year including Disneyland and their annual Spring concert. These children work hard and practice long for Ensemble while still required to maintain their schoolwork and grades. The result is a group of talented children that have found their place to flourish. It is a breath of fresh air to find a district, program and director that are dedicated to supporting the arts in a serious and meaningful way. To the Bellflower Elementary Ensemble, we are so proud of you! Keep up the good work.

Long Beach Paper Boy Makes Good

| | Comments (1) |
pn28-rppthistory1.jpg
As long as I have know him, my husband, Ron Hays, has been a person with excellent values. His first job was with the Independent Press-Telegram. I believe you had an beneficial influence on him. He was a carrier for three years - rising early and delivering papers in the cold morning air by bicycle. In 1971 he was thrilled to receive the Paper Boy of the Year award for outstanding service, route management and scholarship. Later he graduated from Jordan High School with top honors and went on to college.
For the past 16 years he has been associated with the International Society for Quality of Life Research. The organization has a special meeting every October. This year Ron was awarded the Presidential Award from ISOQOL for his outstanding contributions. One was serving as editor of their journal for four years. This was an arduous job and he did it with meticulous care.
Ron, pictured below in more recent times, has continued to be the same person he was in 1971, bringing quality to every area of his life. Thank you for the early recognition and encouragement to him.
