For the second year, Temple Israel of Long Beach has provided a free Christmas dinner at the Drop-in Center based at the First Congregational Church, complete with hot turkey and accompanied by all the usual "fixings" for those Long Beach residents who are facing severe hardships and homelessness. The dinner has evolved from last year's "peanut butter and jelly sandwiches plus drinks," said temple executive director Steve Bascove, to now a full fledged dinner of turkey, with stuffing, gravy, vegetables, desserts and beverages, all due to additional funds donated by temple members and donations of food.
More than 100 Temple Israel volunteers, as well as some students from Cal State Long Beach and a large number of teens, gave their time in this charitable effort to serve more than 400 guests. Some guests arrived with their children and one brought his guitar to entertain at this friendly and heart-warming Christmas event.
Stephanie Bussi and Suzanne Brodsly chaired the event which has now become "a tradition" for the Temple, said Bussi.
