pn14-rproving3.JPGPat Mills with husband, Jim Goodin, visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa as part of a Rome to Barcelona cruise last November. Construction began in 1174 on the eight-story marble free-standing bell tower for the nearby Il Duomo Cathedral. The tower began to lean after completion of the first three stories, and construction was suspended for a century. The bell tower was eventually completed in the late 14th Century with the characteristic lean. As the lean increased over the centuries, the tower was eventually closed from 1990 to 2001 due to dangerous conditions. The foundation was recently stabilized with lead counter weights placed at the tower's base and the tower reopened to visitors.
