September 2010 Archives
Cypress neighbors Mike and Kathie Rood, front, and Jon and Jan Breitbarth share a gondola in Venice, Italy in September 2009. Prior to visiting Venice we spent time in Florence where we saw "David," Michelangelo's magnificient sculpture and beautiful Renaissance paintings by Botticelli and many other artists.

Vic Peterson, left of Los Alamitos and Manny Clores of Cypress reached
the summit of Mt. Whitney on June 14, 2010. A late snow storm made the
96-switchback-route impassable, so with crampons and ice axes we
climbed up the chute route.

In July, Jacqueline Nuñez, above, a senior at Downey High School and Miriam Sandoval, below, a senior at Bellflower High-Middle School, visited with Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) during their weeklong stay in Washington, D.C. as participants in the National Young Leaders' Conference.
Congresswoman Roybal-Allard, who represents the 34th District which includes Bellflower and Downey, said she is proud of Miriam and Jacqueline's involvement in the program and success in school.
"The National Young Leaders' Conference is a unique opportunity for young people to learn first-hand how our government operates," she said.
Both Miriam and Jacqueline are among the many bright students with leadership potential from across our country who will hopefully take what they've learned as part of this program and return home more knowledgeable about the process and better prepared to one day serve their communities and make a difference, she added.
The conference is sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, which is a non-profit, non-partisan leadership, educational organization dedicated to helping young people develop leadership skills.
Both students, who were in the nation's capital from June 26-July 5, was among more than 240 high school students from throughout the nation participating in the conference and two of 27 students from California.
During the week, Miriam and Jacqueline and the other students visited with Members of Congress, conducted mock congressional and presidential deliberations and spent time sightseeing around the area.

Lewis, chief executive officer of Long Beach Rescue Mission joins other
proud Navy Dads for a "Tiger Cruise" aboard the USS Providence
(SSN-719), a Los Angeles-class Nuclear Powered Fast Attack submarine
this week. We spent two days with our sons (or close relative),
explored the boat, performed high-speed maneuvers, experienced the
tight sleeping quarters, and award-winning food. We are extremely proud
of our submarine service keeping their ever-watchful eye out for
trouble ... or hunting it down.

A Dream Come True!
Kristin
Kelso, 24, of Long Beach visits Sydney, Australia. It was a lifelong
dream of mine to travel Australia by myself. After many years of saving
I was able to spend a month touring the East Coast and Northern
Territory during Australia's summer in December and January. I spent
Christmas and New Year's in Australia. I fulfilled my dream of visiting
the Opera House, Steve Erwin's Australia Zoo, the Great Barrier Reef,
the Daintree Rainforest, Ayers Rock and much more! It was the greatest
experience of my life! I worked hard to get there and I don't think it
would have been as meaningful if the trip had just been handed to me. I
will never forget Australia. In May, Bill and Bobbie Longbrake and Linda and Dale Manis, all of Lakewood, went to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. (WE DID IT!)
In June, John Kunkle, of Long Beach visited the Glacier Lodge at Glacier National Park which is commemorating its 100th anniversary this year.

I wanted to tell somebody how George van Zant made my son's year. The column he wrote in June about Tommy's big bass out of El Dorado Lake was awesome, according to many of his school friends and family.

I recently took a family vacation to Indonesia. I am standing in front of the small colonial-style house located on Taman Amir Hamzah Street that Barack Obama lived in as a child in Jakarta, Indonesia. I am standing with the current owners, Dotty Abubakar and her husband Gil.
I grew up in the Long Beach area, where most of my family still lives. My sister, Donna Halbersma in Bellflower, frequently sends me articles from The Press-Telegram about common interests we share. The edition of the paper in this photo included the Reader Page. It was fun to see the Press Telegram in Texas and Pakistan! I wanted to show the paper enjoying the saguaros near my home in the Sonoran desert. She already has the next article in the mail because my first teaching job in 1963 was at DeMille Junior High in Long Beach. She is sending the feature on the school being torn down for a new high school. Times change and memories become precious.
Longtime subscribers Patty and Jerry Martinez are pictured here on our latest trip to Coney Island, New York to see what's said to be the last traditional ten-in-one circus sideshow in the country (www.coneyisland.com/sideshow). Despite the position of the pointing finger, we were not featured in the freak show.
This picture was taken on the Bourassa Farm originally homestead in 1871. The Bourassa Family has owned the farm through six generations. Over 100 relatives, close to 60 from the Long Beach area, traveled to South Dakota the last week of July to celebrate the 100th birthday of Gabe Bourassa Perry who was born on the farm. A week-long Bourassa Family Reunion took relatives back in time to experience a pioneer farm with live animals, homemade ice cream, making butter, cooking a pig in the ground and cleaning chickens. Everyone had such a great time that we look forward to the next reunion.

Sisters, Kylie Vestre, Melissa Matheson, Emily Matheson and Katie Vestre enjoyed vacationing together in the beautiful King's Canyon National Park. This photo was taken at Roaring River Falls, one of many places the girls enjoyed the crystal clear water.
Martin Blagaich, holding the Press-Telegram, is a graduate of Long Beach Poly where he was very active in the music program. He played Tromebone and Euphonium in the school's Symphonic Band and Jazz Band, and was taught by Mr. Osman and Mr. Stevens. Once Martin arrived at UC Berkeley, he took the skills he gained at Poly and started applying them to taiko drumming. Martin was the showcase coordinator, webmaster, and composer of two songs for the group Cal Raijin Taiko.
Here he is with the student-run taiko group at the UC Berkeley. They are about five years old. The picture was taken right after Cal Raijin Taiko's third annual showcase, which was held in Pauley Ballroom on April 14. More information can be at website taiko.berkeley.edu

Pete, a dachshund mix, and Noodle, a pure-bred mini-dachshund, were good buddies even before we adopted them from the Seal Beach Animal Shelter in May. They look relaxed and cozy here, but go crazy when it's time for "walkies."
