I grew up in the Long Beach area, where most of my family still lives. My sister, Donna Halbersma in Bellflower, frequently sends me articles from The Press-Telegram about common interests we share. The edition of the paper in this photo included the Reader Page. It was fun to see the Press Telegram in Texas and Pakistan! I wanted to show the paper enjoying the saguaros near my home in the Sonoran desert. She already has the next article in the mail because my first teaching job in 1963 was at DeMille Junior High in Long Beach. She is sending the feature on the school being torn down for a new high school. Times change and memories become precious.
Longtime subscribers Patty and Jerry Martinez are pictured here on our latest trip to Coney Island, New York to see what's said to be the last traditional ten-in-one circus sideshow in the country (www.coneyisland.com/sideshow). Despite the position of the pointing finger, we were not featured in the freak show.
This picture was taken on the Bourassa Farm originally homestead in 1871. The Bourassa Family has owned the farm through six generations. Over 100 relatives, close to 60 from the Long Beach area, traveled to South Dakota the last week of July to celebrate the 100th birthday of Gabe Bourassa Perry who was born on the farm. A week-long Bourassa Family Reunion took relatives back in time to experience a pioneer farm with live animals, homemade ice cream, making butter, cooking a pig in the ground and cleaning chickens. Everyone had such a great time that we look forward to the next reunion.
