Good Kids Keep others warm

| | Comments (0) |
pn17-rpgoodkids.JPGStudents at Bethany Lutheran School in Long Beach recently donated handmade blankets to the Lakewood Sheriff's Department. The blankets were made in class as part of an All School Service Day. Each grade level, from pre-school through 8th grade selected a service related project that would benefits others within the community. The students in Miss Imes 5th/6th grade and Mrs. Werner's 5th grade classes decided to make blankets and deliver them to the local Sheriff's station. A highlight of the trip was a comprehensive tour of the Sheriff's station given to the students by the station officials. Other classes at Bethany Lutheran School collected food, clothing and toys for those with less; designed and delivered handmade cards to residents of a senior center where they serenaded the residents; and collected books for children in homeless shelters.

Here's our little grandson, Sean Innerbichler, who lives in Maryland with his parents, Nick and Amy Innerbichler. We miss him so much and love to get special photos of him. This one shows him peeking around the corner saying what we imagine to be "Hi Pop!, Hi Grammy!" His beautiful smile always brightens our day!

An act of Kindness

| | Comments (0) |
pn10-rpcoolpet.jpgWe experienced a random act of kindness so simple that the giver couldn't have realized the magnitude of the gift he gave us. We lost our most precious baby, our kitty Roosevelt, to a coyote just over a year ago. Out of the blue we received a message on our answering machine from a man saying he had found Roosevelt's collar and would drop it by our house, which he did. We were not home and could not thank him and let him know how much his kindness meant to us. It means the world to us to have this little item back, as we miss our Roosevelt as much now as when we lost him. I have no way of thanking him. Bless you, sir.
Our Roosevelt was a starving, flea covered, crippled runt that the neighbor's cat brought home. He had surgery on each of his back legs to repair them as he wasn't able to walk without popping both knees back into place. He had bladder issues so he used to get a pill every day and a shot once a week. We loved our baby.

Mom and Daughter Are Nurses Together!

pn10-rpnurses.jpgI am a registered nurse, semi-retired, who traveled to Columbus, Ohio to watch my daughter officially become a nurse. Courtney Anne Baker graduated from Columbus State Community College in early December. Courtney already had a bachelor's degree in marketing from Georgetown University. She was part of a special program for students who wanted to try another career. To my surprise, Courtney chose nursing. She was announced at the graduation program by her husband Dr. Jonathan Baker who is the dean of the Math Department at the college. Courtney hopes to attend Ohio State University to further her nursing career.

After 5 years of saving, I was finally able to go. I picked this particular copy of the Press-Telegram because the headline said it all, "Challenge Is Met" Behind me is Loch Ness, near Inverness, Scotland. Nessie never appeared, but the lake was the deepest blue I had ever seen.

Long Beach Dental Hygiene Society holiday project supports local shelters.

Board members of the Long Beach Dental Hygienists' Society, a component of the American Dental Hygienists' Association, prepared over 200 dental health kits in December for local shelters for women and teens at their December meeting. Kits included toothbrushes, dental floss, colorful kids flossers, toothpaste and sugar free gum in holiday bags.
Deliveries were made to a shelter for victims of domestic violence in Long Beach, and to Precious Life shelter for homeless pregnant women and the Casa Youth Shelter, both in Los Alamitos. Children and their family members at the Bethune Transitional School for homeless families in Long Beach were also among the grateful recipients. The project was coordinated by two recent graduates from Cypress College, LaRhonda McCracken, RDH and Abbra Sanders, RDH with the assistance of Dale Parker, RDH. LaRhonda is a Long Beach resident and is the new Chairperson for the LBDHS Community Health projects. Cool Pets & Companions

pn20-rpcoolpet.JPGThis is my mom Mitzi and her dog Mollie. We moved a very brokenhearted Mitzi into our home, from Connecticut about five years ago after our sister died of breast cancer. It was quite an adjustment for an 87-year old woman. About a year ago, we adopted Mollie from the Long Beach Animal Shelter, in part, to lift Mitzi's spirits. A very kind and knowledgeable worker at the shelter matched us with Mollie, who we believe to be about 5-years old now. When we brought Mom to the shelter to see if they would be good together, I was encouraged to see our mom excited about the prospects of adopting a dog as she had always been a little hesitant. When Mollie came in the room any concerns we might have had were quickly dispelled. Mollie ran right under Mitzi's walker and gently asked to get up on her lap. They have been inseparable ever since. Mitzi believes that Mollie was sent to us from Heaven, from her late daughter. She is a little angel and has enriched all our lives. We encourage your readers to consider adopting from a shelter if they're thinking of bringing a dog into their lives. We are so thankful to the shelter for matching us with Mollie and we are especially thankful to Mollie for giving us so much love and for making Mitzi happier every day.

pn27-rpcoolpet.jpgMeet Knight, a 15-month old Beagle who we have owned since July 2010. Our dog Sherlock passed away after 17 years and six months. After about a year we added a new puppy to our family. Our other Beagle, Piper, 10, was happy to have a new buddy.
We were off to a rocky start, however, when after only a month, Knight ate a good sized rock that lodged in his intestines. After major surgery and living in the crate for two weeks, Knight has made a complete recovery. No more rocks for this hungry and very curious Beagle. He is very happy in his new home!
