pn14-rpgoodkid.jpgThis is my son, Zachary Schallmann, a 5th- grader at Gant Elementary School, with the Long Beach 49er Mens Volleyball team. They have adopted him as a lucky charm. He attends all of the home games with his grandfather. The coach asked him if he'd like to visit during a practice. This picture was taken during practice. It's so great to see a group of young men step up and be role models for the young members of our community. Way to go 49ers!!

pn14-rpvolunteer.JPGMarina Pacifica's 3rd Annual Food Drive for Food Finders. Each year volunteers go door to door, about 570 doors, picking up food from residents. We had over 13 volunteers. We collect and sort the food and we also ask for personal care items and pet food. In 2008 and 2009, we collected over 1000 pounds of food - results aren't in yet for 2010. Even the pouring rain didn't stop anyone from contributing to a good cause.

Besides its natural beauty, this area offers a trip through time through their museums and other visits, from the prehistoric rock formations, the acquaintance of native American tribes whose ancestors still live there, the journey of Lewis and Clark, the historic fur-traders to modern agriculture, including vineyards and wineries as well as maritime activities.
An exciting trip by jet boat through Hell's Canyon on the Snake river included seeing wildlife as well as prehistoric petroglyphs on ancient basalt formations.

This is our cool pet, Cuhulain, named after the mythic Celtic warrior. Our Cuhulain is a 4-year old Goldendoodle and, at 85 pounds, is about 20 pounds bigger than we were told he would be. Fortunately for us, he is all heart. His mother was a white golden retriever and his father a red standard poodle. His favorite game is pulling the stuffing out of his toys. Here he is on Christmas morning, after happily eviscerating Santa Claus.

futurecoolpet7.jpgOscar Meyer Joseph; Oscar was a stray dodging traffic on a busy Long Beach street. My daughter rushed out to him, scooping him up to safety. He immediately captivated every one lucky enough to make his acquaintance. He is a Wire Haired Doxie with an adorable face and a sweet personality to match. Having him micro chipped adds a lot of peace of mind. Finding such a special dog was a very fortuante day for us. Oscar will never ever be homeless again.

futurecoolpet8.jpgCorky the Kitten Rescuer: Recently our dog, Corky had a barking fit at one part of the fence in our back yard. My daughter stood on a ladder to look over the fence and could see nothing to account for Corky's barking frenzy. Nevertheless, Corky persisted in barking at that part of the fence, whenever he was allowed access to that part of the yard for the next few days.
In desperation, I asked my daughter to take another look over the fence to see what could be there that had Corky so upset. To our surprise, this time there was a small kitten. Unable to reach the kitten, I asked a neighbor and her handy man to help. I also called Animal Control.
It was estimated that the kitten wa about six weeks old. Because the kitten was so small we were told that it wouldn't be adopted but probably be put to sleep. My neighbor adopted the kitten. As a result of Corky's persistant barking at the fence, this kitten now has eight more lives to live and a new home as well. This is the second time Corky's barking at the fence has alerted us to take action. About a year ago there were feral kittens on the other side of our fence, and not sign of the mother.

His canine brothers are not yet accepting of him, so we have had quite a bit of drama. We are hoping someday that they will all get along. Since we have never been cat people, we have had some things to learn. Won-ton is not only handsome, but sweet and a welcomed addition to our family.

Jim Goodin and Pat Mills, Long Beach residents, visit the Normandy American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach and the English Channel. Following the massive 1944 Allied D-Day assault of the Normandy coastline aimed to liberate France and drive into Nazi Germany, 9,387 American soldiers, airmen, and sailors, were buried close to where they died. In addition 1,557 missing in action are memorialized here. Another 14,000 service men were returned to the United States for burial. We all owe these men an enormous debt for the freedom we enjoy today.

At Thomas Jefferson School in the Bellflower School District, the children in Mrs. Coni Cox-Burrison's grades 1st and 2nd combination class, do much of their best learning when they have the opportunity to partner up with a friend in a class location other than at their assigned seat.
They show the joy of learning and a lot of enthusiasm as they choose to work with partners on the floor, up in the reading loft, or at the computer table. As they work together they may read, check spelling words, discuss math problems or work on a project. Learning happens when they help each other.
