Following the massive 1944 Allied D-Day assault of the Normandy coastline aimed to liberate France and drive into Nazi Germany, 9,387 American soldiers, airmen, and sailors, were buried close to where they died. In addition 1,557 missing in action are memorialized here. Another 14,000 service men were returned to the United States for burial.
