When people hear that my cat Barkley, a male, black Persian mix, just turned 21-years-old, they can not believe it. Well, it's not just his age, but his love of adventure that is amazing. Barkley has always been an indoor/outdoor cat, so he still does have some street smarts. But for the last five years or more he has stayed mostly on the patio, in the yard, or in the house. In fact, he's the only cat I can trust to stay indoors all day and not wreck anything! He's a good cat.
He is almost blind because of cataracts and his hearing and his sense of smell isn't as good as it used to be. So, how does a cat with all those impediments manage to not only survive for over a month away in the summer last year? He was later found five blocks away and a little thinner. Recently he got out the gate again and wandered over a mile away. But, we found him five days later. On another occasion, he got out and when I was driving home, I saw him in the middle of a main street with cars approaching, obviously disorientated. I scooped him up and took him home -- again amazed he had again survived.
Let's just say Barkley has a penchant for life and a constitution that's truly hardier than most people. We hope he lives another five years and with his tenacity, he just might.

Long Beach brothers Johnathan and Stephen Miranda have been commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in the United States Air Force. Lt. Johnathan Miranda, left, has been assigned to the 30th Security Forces Squadron at Vandenburg Air Force Base. Lt. Here is 91-year-old Betty Marcroft's more than 50-year-old tortoise trying to eat her grandkitty Saffy's food. Saffy is very surprised to see Mr. Tortoise eating her food. Mrs. Marcroft has lived on the same block in Norwalk for 70 years.

In June, my family gathered at Rosie The Riveter Park to celebrate what would have been my brother Bill "Jitterbug" Meshad's 90th birthday. Bill lost his life at 22 as a result of injuries he suffered in an Air Force training flight on August 1, 1943. The following letter, from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was delivered to my family at our Long Beach home:
In grateful memory of Lt. William M. Meshad Jr., who died in the service of his country at

Roswell Army Air Field, Roswell, New Mexico, August 1, 1943. He stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die. That freedom might live and grow and increase its blessings. Freedom lives and through it he lives -- in a way that humbles the undertakings of most men.
Here I am holding the flag that was presented to my parents at the time of my brother's death. I have ordered a plaque in his memory through Gerrie Schipske's Rosie The Riveter Foundation Memorial Wall Project. I sang his favorite song, "Tangerine," and played Glenn Miller's, "In the Mood," in his memory.
While working as a "Rosie," at Douglas Aircraft during the War, I fondly remember my brother writing to me, "Sis, you build them and I'll fly them."
Bill was quite a fisherman. In his early teens, during the depression, he would fish off the rocks of Rainbow Pier and bring home gunny sacks full of fish to feed the neighborhood.
He was a member of the Long Beach Poly High Class of 1939 and earned a Life Pass as a member of the Poly High 1938 CIF State Championship Varsity Cross Country Team. While in high school, Bill had a paper route delivering The Long Beach Independent.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM
By Janet Faria
By Janet Faria
My mom, Dolores Lounsbury, is the epitome of a mom. She turned 90 on July 1. She was raised on a farm in Minnesota, and was the 5th child of eight. At a very young age, she stood on a box and learned to cook on a wood stove. She left home for Long Beach in 1938 at 17. When she got here, she started working in restaurants and in the homes of Naval Officers and the wealthy of Long Beach. In 1943, she married my dad, and continued working in private homes cooking for luncheons and dinner parties. This led to her starting a catering business.
I was born in 1945 and we moved into our first and only home in the Wrigley Area on Daisy Avenue. Between 1945 and 1961, my folks had six children including twins in 1959. Mom volunteered at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, was involved in PTA six times over, bowled at least once a week, and entered the CWBA State Tournament every year. Her catering business kept us all together through tough times; really hard times; and good times. She weathered all the storms raising six kids, including the 4 a.m. Sunday wake-ups when the four youngest kids and my dad got up to deliver Press-Telegram newspapers. Speaking of the Press-Telegram, Mom's name appeared on the society page a few times because she was the one in the kitchen producing the wonderful looking and delicious tasting food for the party. Once after doing a fund raiser for Nancy Reagan who was campaigning for her husband, Ronald, Mom was invited to Sacramento to do some catering for the Governor and Nancy. She couldn't go because of all of us, but it sure was a testimonial to her catering excellence.
Dolores is still active in bowling two times a week at CAL, volunteering at St. Cornelius Church, playing pinochle with a card group on Mondays, and still keeps her hands in catering. She also does her own cooking and house cleaning, and still has family dinners for all our birthdays.
Dad passed away in 1979. She married again to Charles Lounsbury in 1981. Chuck passed away in 2005, and she has been alone ever since. Alone? How can you be alone with six children, seven grandchildren, and nine great- grandchildren. She has been a fantastic role model, a pillar of society, and certainly on the highest pedestal for all of us.
Happy 90th birthday Mom. You go girl!

Quaker Gardens honors '100's'
Quaker Gardens Senior Living in Stanton California honored seven residents whom own the distinction of being centenarians: living to the age of 100 or older. They were honored in a celebration in May.
May McBath, 103, Cecilia "Bobbie" Wilder, 102, Dorothy Andrist, 101, Clara Donna "Shane", 101, Josephine "Josie" Still, 100, Beulah Edwards, 99-1/2, all wore crowns and enjoyed the warmth and appreciation from their fellow residents.
Dorothy Andrist a long time resident of Long Beach lived there for 52 years. She and her husband owned "Ball & Frank Sporting Goods Store" on Long Beach Boulevard between 3rd and 4th Streets.
Wilma Bryan lived in North Long Beach for 60 years with husband Ros Bryan. Ros was an independent trucker hauling for Owl Rock and Wilma worked in the meat department at Cole's Market on Atlantic Avenue. She was active in the North Long Beach Brethren Church.Andrist attributes her long life to making smart decisions. "Clean living," she said, has been the secret to her success, "I never drank or smoke, lots of garlic and no red meat." She does however admit one weakness: "I'm a bona fide, choc-a-holic."

Eighty years to celebrate
Patricia Ann Marshall, (Layman)
Patricia Ann Marshall, (Layman)
Most people know Pat as a world traveler. Whether it's viewing the glaciers in Alaska, walking the cobblestone streets of Tallinn, Estonia, or cruising the Kiel Canal, Pat's passion is travel. But Pat is also known for her dedication. For 37 years she worked at Pacific Telephone serving many times during national disasters. Married to James Edgar Marshall for 50 years, she raised two children, Michael Marshall and Danni Shuman, encouraged three grandchildren, James Marshall, Sarah Jones and Abby Shuman, and enjoys two great-grandchildren, Chase and Cassidy Jones.
For 77 years Pat has lived in California. She was born in Kansas, Missouri on July 27th. Pat is known to be a great neighbor and friend. What an inspiration you are to all of us! Happy 80 Years Mom, Grandma, and Great-grandma (Granny). We love you, Your Family.

My daughter and I live in an East Long Beach home that was built in the early 50s. She was on her way to a 40s/50s dance in this photo. We had music from Glen Miller playing in the background while preparing her for a fun night out on the town. Here she's dressed in a simple gray 50s style dress in our 50s home. Our neighbor and friend Maggie, who just turned 90, said seeing her was like going back in time.

Commencement Celebration at Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach From left, Blanca Casillas, high school graduate, Pablo Lazo, middle School graduate and Maraiya Gomez, middle school graduate were able to celebrate their success at a surprise graduation party.
A collaboration between Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach's in-house school teacher, Angelica Nunez-Lindsay, music therapist, Laurel Terreri, child life therapist, Allison Singhi, and community partner, Discovery Arts, all worked together to recognize patients' hard work throughout the school year while battling cancer.
The care team and their extended family surprised the three hospitalized teens with a graduation celebration. Blanca Casillas, Pablo Lazo and Maraiya Gomez all graduated from their respective schools, but because of their conditions were unable to attend their own graduation ceremonies.
The Miller Children's team wanted to make sure these kids had a well-deserved graduation experience. The playroom was decorated with many colorful balloons, graduation decorations and music. A look of awe and smiles were on the kids' faces as they walked down the hall and headed towards the decorated playroom that served as their commencement grounds.
Noteworthy student on the rise
Aaron A. Hill, an upcoming QUEST senior at Robert A. Millikan High School, recently returned from China with the Global Youth Leadership Conference (GYLC). Aaron was initially nominated through his school to attend Congressional Youth Leadership Conference (held in Irvine, 2010)in preparations for GYLC. As a QUEST student, he has received numerous awards including Merit of Scholar, Student Character award (English), and MVP Offensive Line just to name a few. He is also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. With college in the horizon (2012), Aaron is looking to major in Business Management and minor in Computer Science. Universities like UCLA, Duke, Yale and Stanford keep Aaron focused on maintaining an excellent grade point average as well as completing his 4th year in football. He is a grounded young man on his way to make a difference in society.GYLC made a huge impact on Aaron in the area of International Business. While in China, he visited Hong Kong, Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai.
He interacted with key leaders and newsmakers with powerful influence over politics, finance, culture and diplomacy, and took part in a carefully designed curriculum, which included thought-provoking simulations that build leadership skills. According to Aaron, meeting Zhu Haiquan, director of Department for North American & Oceanic Affairs and going to the Great Wall of China, were major highlights of the trip.
GYLC's theme this summer is "Leaders of Tomorrow Preparing for the Global Challenges and Responsibilities of the Future". We find Aaron Hill to be a global leader of our future and a noteworthy student on the rise!
