Long Beach Police Department Graduates Nine New Senior Police Partners
In August 2011 the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) graduated a class of nine individuals as Senior Police Partners (SPP). The new graduates are Sonia Duran, Fran Feinberg, Sylvia Goldstein, Ernestine Green, Isidro "Izzy" Lopez, Linda Penrod, Jane Rutkin, Suzie Williams and Mike Yoachum.
The Senior Police Partner program was developed in 1995 to meet the needs of the growing senior community and to assist the LBPD with community outreach to senior victims of crime. The program has had a positive impact on quality of life issues for senior citizens and has proven to be a tremendous asset to community safety throughout the city.
The 40-hour academy included both classroom and field training.
Now that the new SPPs have completed the academy portion of their training, each will be assigned to a Senior SSP for approximately 90 days for one-on-one training in the field. Upon completion of the training matrix, they will be presented with a volunteer badge.
Congratulations Dr. Nicole Salg
This is a story about my family that's been in this area since the 1940s and one that, to this day, has many connections in Long Beach. The Fabulous Klosterman Family loses yet another
A war era Press-Telegram story labeled them the Fabulous Klosterman Family, (father Clem) having sent sons off to fight the war and others to succeed in their various endeavors. Winifred, the mother penned an award winning story for The Reader's Digest called "Fifteen Babies Aren't Enough." This photo was taken outside their residence in 1948 at 401 S. Poinsettia in Compton with their new '48 Chevy. And now, yet one more has passed away, leaving only four out of the 15. Francis A. (Frenchy) Klosterman, 3rd from the right, passed away July 12. A teammate of Dodger's great Duke Snider at Compton High School, and friend of Pete Rozelle, former NFL Commissioner, Frenchy was the student body president while playing football, basketball and baseball ... leaped from two burning B-24s during WWII training flights. The Klosterman clan was iconic in the area in the late 40s and early 50s. Don, standing far left, starred as Quarterback at Compton High and went on to lead the NCAA in passing at Loyola University in 1950, then to a stellar career as General Manager with three NFL teams including the Los Angeles Rams. Tom QBd and starred at St. Anthony, as did brother Jim. Patti Peters attended both St. Anthony and Compton High and was a popular Long Beach resident all her life. She's married to Don Peters; Jeannie married Don Berberet, star athlete and collegiate official and brother of MLB player Lou, and Shirley attended Compton High. All 15 went on to successful and fruitful lives, mostly in the immediate and surrounding areas of Long Beach. Tom, Jim, Jeannie and Shirley are the surviving siblings.

Standing on the left of the car, left to right; Don, Kay (Bundy), Addie (Burke) , Bob, Joi (Weber), Lynn (Day), Shirley (Moore), Ken. Standing on the right of the car, L-R: Jeanne (Berberet), Marion (Metzler), Frenchy, Clement, Winnifred. Sitting in the car is Ruthie (Higgins)

Elephant Starts New Life in Go-Fame's Production of "Barnum"
Mel and Joan Lindsey donate elephant to Long Beach's Go-Fame Youth Theatre Co. By Dorothy Spirus
They say cats have nine lives, but there's an elephant in Long Beach that can claim she's on her fourth. She was one of the featured performers in the musical "Barnum," presented by the Go-Fame Youth Theatre Company in July at the University Theatre on the Cal State Long Beach campus.
This life-sized elephant made her debut in the 1983 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena as part of the Eastman-Kodak float, along with her two babies.
She and her offspring were then fixtures at Orange County Park for several years, followed by a 15-year stint in the playground of a Costa Mesa daycare center.
Next, owner Mel Lindsey took her home with him when he sold that business six years ago. She's been standing near the alley behind his Long Beach home until now.
"This is just delightful, getting her back to her glory," said Lindsey. "She's done a lot of good over the years -- entertaining and bringing joy to kids."
Nicknamed Alley Elephant by the neighborhood children, she had fallen into disrepair over the years. Go-Fame's stage craft crew restored her for a triumphant public unveiling when "Barnum" opened.
Go-Fame's artistic director Elaine Zofrea was delighted with the acquisition.
"Some people adopt rescue dogs, we just like bigger animals," she said. "We are honored that Mel has entrusted us to care for his elephant."
The rest of the Barnum cast is comprised of local youth, aged 8 to 18.

Here I am after kayaking down the Hanalei River on the north shore of Kauai, then paddling in the open ocean to a lovely beach near the Princeville Resort. After snorkeling with my wife and two daughters, I suggested we take a family portrait with the Press-Telegram. Strangely, I was the only one who agreed to be photographed. The rock formation in the background is the vision of "Bali Hai," immortalized in the wonderful film "South Pacific."

Making a Difference
On May 22, Girl Scout Cadette Troop 2943 held a "Cover Girl Culture" workshop at the Long Beach Service Center. The workshop brought attention to how advertising, media and peer pressure affect your body image, health and self esteem. The troop accomplished their goals of informing younger girls, building self-esteem and passing it forward through a variety of activities like round table discussions, creating collages from teen fashion magazines to recognize positive vs. negative advertising messages, and participating in self-esteem building exercises. Girl Scout troops from 4th grade through 7th grade participated. The girls from Troop 2943 were inspired to select this topic for their Cadette Amaze Journey Take Action Project after watching "Cover Girl Culture - Awakening the Media Generation." After contacting the video's producer, Nicole Clark, a portion of her video was included in the workshop. The girls researched, planned, prepared and ran all activities to fulfill their requirement.

The students in my daughter's class had gathered donations for the Red Cross for Japan and the mid-West from the disasters that had happened there. They were so worried about the people in those locations they wanted to send some help. They had lemonade stands, asked neighbors for donations and gave their allowance money. In total, the donations came to $200.05. We contacted the Red Cross and they had a representative stop by to receive the check. His name is Phil Wendel - a long time volunteer of the Red Cross. The school is Fremont Elementary in Long Beach and this is Mrs. Durazzo's 4th grade class.Submitted by Tina Barry
