HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM

My mom, Dolores Lounsbury, is the epitome of a mom. She turned 90 on July 1. She was raised on a farm in Minnesota, and was the 5th child of eight. At a very young age, she stood on a box and learned to cook on a wood stove. She left home for Long Beach in 1938 at 17. When she got here, she started working in restaurants and in the homes of Naval Officers and the wealthy of Long Beach. In 1943, she married my dad, and continued working in private homes cooking for luncheons and dinner parties. This led to her starting a catering business.
I was born in 1945 and we moved into our first and only home in the Wrigley Area on Daisy Avenue. Between 1945 and 1961, my folks had six children including twins in 1959. Mom volunteered at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, was involved in PTA six times over, bowled at least once a week, and entered the CWBA State Tournament every year. Her catering business kept us all together through tough times; really hard times; and good times. She weathered all the storms raising six kids, including the 4 a.m. Sunday wake-ups when the four youngest kids and my dad got up to deliver Press-Telegram newspapers. Speaking of the Press-Telegram, Mom's name appeared on the society page a few times because she was the one in the kitchen producing the wonderful looking and delicious tasting food for the party. Once after doing a fund raiser for Nancy Reagan who was campaigning for her husband, Ronald, Mom was invited to Sacramento to do some catering for the Governor and Nancy. She couldn't go because of all of us, but it sure was a testimonial to her catering excellence.
Dolores is still active in bowling two times a week at CAL, volunteering at St. Cornelius Church, playing pinochle with a card group on Mondays, and still keeps her hands in catering. She also does her own cooking and house cleaning, and still has family dinners for all our birthdays.
Dad passed away in 1979. She married again to Charles Lounsbury in 1981. Chuck passed away in 2005, and she has been alone ever since. Alone? How can you be alone with six children, seven grandchildren, and nine great- grandchildren. She has been a fantastic role model, a pillar of society, and certainly on the highest pedestal for all of us.
Happy 90th birthday Mom. You go girl!

Quaker Gardens honors '100's'
Quaker Gardens Senior Living in Stanton California honored seven residents whom own the distinction of being centenarians: living to the age of 100 or older. They were honored in a celebration in May.
May McBath, 103, Cecilia "Bobbie" Wilder, 102, Dorothy Andrist, 101, Clara Donna "Shane", 101, Josephine "Josie" Still, 100, Beulah Edwards, 99-1/2, all wore crowns and enjoyed the warmth and appreciation from their fellow residents.
Dorothy Andrist a long time resident of Long Beach lived there for 52 years. She and her husband owned "Ball & Frank Sporting Goods Store" on Long Beach Boulevard between 3rd and 4th Streets.
Wilma Bryan lived in North Long Beach for 60 years with husband Ros Bryan. Ros was an independent trucker hauling for Owl Rock and Wilma worked in the meat department at Cole's Market on Atlantic Avenue. She was active in the North Long Beach Brethren Church.Andrist attributes her long life to making smart decisions. "Clean living," she said, has been the secret to her success, "I never drank or smoke, lots of garlic and no red meat." She does however admit one weakness: "I'm a bona fide, choc-a-holic."

This beautiful lady is Jeanelle Booth. As a special guest she attended the Long Beach Poly Retired staff's luncheon on May 2nd. Jeanelle graduated from Poly in 1935. She spoke at the luncheon about her memories of Poly during the 1933 earthquake and other memories of her school days. Everyone was so impressed by her that people kept asking the committee where we found her. We found her right here in Bixby Knolls where she has lived most of her life. Jeanelle played the violin in the Poly Orchestra under director Anthony Gill. After graduating she played with the Women's Symphony which was invited to play at the World's Fair in San Diego. She later became a member of the Long Beach Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Robert Resta. She is active in Bethany Baptist Church of Long Beach. No one would guess that she will be celebrating her 94th birthday in August. She is quite a lady and has made Poly proud.

On April 16, Quevetta Powell Robinson surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a multitude of family and friends celebrated her 99th birthday in Carson. On April 16, 1912 one of the most beautiful and loving people was born, our Matriarch, "Mother" also known as "Aunt Koot." She has been blessed by God the Father to have powered through the Civil Rights Movement, watch the fall of great leaders and witness history being made.
She has watched her family blossom and multiply into an exceptional and well-favored group of people. She has taught the women to be strong-willed in the face of adversity, and how to be determined and beautiful at the same time. She taught the men in her family the true definition of the word man.
Mother, your faithfulness to the Word of God has inspired us to be plentiful in the work of the Lord and to revel in his goodness and mercy. No one can comprehend the immensity of the love we have for you, our Precious Jewel.
Happy Birthday Mother, We Love You!
