About two years ago we adopted this shiny, leggy, 86-pounder from the non-profit sanctuary, Livingfree.org in the San Jacinto mountains near Idllywild. We did a breed ID - DNA test on "Duke," now 3-years old, a mix of Weimaraner and German Shepard. Adopting an older animal has worked out so well for us. He gets along so good with our two cats, and our turtles. He is so loved, and so much fun. Submitted by Mike and Lee Folks

These are my landlords, Sparky is a male Domestic Short Hair and Charly is a female gray Taby. Charly was adopted at seven weeks from the Seal Beach Animal Care Center. As luck would have it, I found Sparky a few weeks later abandoned and about the same age. Our of curiousity, I counted the toys they have around the house -- 47! They couldn't be spoiled, could they? I fell so grateful they let me live with them.Submitted by Ron Hewitt

Our special pet is Pebbles. After having mostly beagles as our family pets for years, now we have a chihuahua. Our neighbors rescued her from a busy street in West Covina. A car narrowly missed hitting her. After trying to locate her owner, the neighbors offered her to us.They knew we were feeling sad because we had just lost our beagle, Buddy. Pebbles has brought a lot of joy into our lives and we are grateful to our neighbors, who we call her Godparents. In this photo is Pebbles in the middle of two porch decorations we have had for years.

Somewhere there is a slogan, "Put a Sparkle in your life." Ours is a lovable little female bichon. After losing Noel, another lovable female bichon, after some fifteen years, we decided that our home needed another companion since all our children were grown and living in their own homes.Sparkle was given to us by our breeder and although she was the runt of the litter, she was gorgeous to us.
During her time with us, Sparkle has captured our hearts. She plays hard all day then crawls into one of our leather chairs in the den around 8 p.m. each evening to go to sleep. At 9 p.m., she is put to bed in her kennel cab beside our bed. Early in the morning before daybreak, she's awake adn scatching on her cab to let us know she wants to get in bed with us. There she rolls up like a little white powder puff and goes back to sleep, between us, until about 7 a.m.
Soon after, she is ready to go out for her morning walk in Wardlow Park just across the street from our home. For most of the day she plays, runs around the den at high speeds, eats and sleeps and goes for walks in front of the house. She has become an integral part of our lives and really is the "Sparkle" in it.

Brutus is commonly called Bubba. Theodore is the Chihuahua who thinks he is a guard dog and Bubba is the lap dog. They are both rescues and the best of buddies. Bubba even let Theo win in tug of war and lets him sleep on his back.

I am submitting these photos for your "Our Cool Pet" section. Kiwi is four years old and a very special member of our family. She's not like most dogs. She's very observant and very sweet; never barks and usually sits at our feet. She tilts her head a lot as if she's thinking of what to do next. She's a full bred Pomeranian, but we think she's a Chihuahua in a bear suit.
