Candace Kelly-Hodge and husband Mike were visiting Ireland on their honeymoon and slipped in a side trip and visit to Mike's aunt, Sister Joan of the Carmelite Order of Nuns. The picture was taken in Dolgellau (pronounced doll-geath-ee) in Wales, where Sister Joan's monastery is located. Sister Joan recently turned 80. At one point she served as a nun in Long Beach. Candace and Mike originally planned to get married on a beach but the caution that the Bible says that marriage should be build on a foundation of rock caused them to set their sights on higher ground ... they wed at Long Beach's iconic Sky Room.
Gordon (Corky) Abbott of Long Beach may be taking the Roving Reader concept to new heights. This timeout with the P-T occurred in 1951 in the unfriendly countryside of Korea. Corky, at right, was sharing some of his mom's carrot cake with his buddies, from left, "Crawford,'' of California; "Monroe,'' of Ohio; and "Patterson,'' of Minnesota (GIs traditionally fondly recall friends on a last-name basis). Corky delivered the morning Independent and sold the afternoon paper on the corner of American (now Long Beach Boulevard) and Anaheim during World War II.

Joyce Levitt of Long Beach, formerly with the World Clown Association, shares a Press-Telegram moment with Staphen, a headliner with the Nikoulin Moscow Circus, the 128-year-old extravaganza, during a recent visit to the Russian capital. We're still trying to decide if this qualifies as a Roving Reader, Cool Pet of the Week, or all of the above.
Ellen Swieck of Long Beach stopped over at the dazzling Boston Museum of Fine Arts during a recent literary tour of Massachusetts. Ellen was standing next to one of a pair of sculptures, called ``Night'' and ``Day'' by Spanish artist Antonio Lopez Garcia. The MFA acquired them last year right after hosting a retrospective of Lopez Garcia's paintings and sculpture and just in time for the reopening of its historic Fenway-side entrance. The sculptures flank the stairs of the Fenway entrance and were unveiled in June 2008. The museum is a gem in a city of gems and you can check it out at www.mfa.org.
Carolyn and Mike Milburn took a side trip while visiting friends in Jackson Hole, Wyo., in August and took a drive over to see Mount Rushmore, the legendary monument near Keystone, S.D. Almost 400 workers were employed in creating the sculptures from October of 1927 to October of 1941. It was extremely dangerous work there were no lives lost. Read about the monument online at www.nps.gov/moru.

D.C. and Beth Sands, with longtime friends Wayne and P.J., always enjoy heading to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii for the last game of the season. However, since 2009 was the last year for the Pro Bowl in Hawaii, they thought it was only fitting that they share it with the Roving Readers. Aloha, Pro Bowl. (The 2010 Pro Bowl will be held a week before the Super Bowl in Miami.)
