How Far Will This Discernment Trend Go?
I know that this weekend's box office photo finish between "Happy Feet" and "Casino Royale" was more marketing driven than anything else.
They were two films vast swaths of audience wanted to see, promoted to within inches of their very production budgets. But they were also, respectively, the artiest talking animal cartoon of the year and the finest James Bond movie since, oh, "Thunderball" or so. And critics made sure the public knew these facts.
Sometime over the upcoming holiday weekend, "Feet" and "Royale" will join the other two best-reviewed wide releases of the season - "The Departed" and "Borat" - at the top of the cumulative fall grosses chart. That will be ahead of purportedly "critic proof" swill such as "Saw III" and "Santa Clause: Beating the Dead Reindeer" or whatever it's called.
This all seems to prove that quality counts, even in the degraded realm of mass-marketed movies. This month, anyway. I say, enjoy it while we can.
