And Now, A Message from My Ego

The New York Times and other big media outlets are just realizing that a lot of smart and independent adult movies are hitting theaters this summer.Hate to say I told you so (no, that's not true), but on April 29, I wrote the following in the L.A. Daily News' summer movie preview:
This is the time when thoughtful observers traditionally lament the utter lack of imagination that will dominate multiplexes for the next four months. But we're not going to do that. A closer look at the summer 2007 movie slate reveals a surprising number of films that aren't likely to repeat overworked formulas — or insult adult intelligence. Many of these are small, independent productions that may require a little seeking out, but at least you can see them if you live in the L.A. area. In most other parts of the country, "Ocean's Thirteen" is about as sophisticated as it's gonna get.
For example, along with Spidey on Friday, we get both the return of a superb Julie Christie (in the touching Alzheimer's drama "Away From Her") and legendary French auteur Alain Resnais ("Private Fears in Public Places"). That's a promising start for any season, so don't be complaining that there's nothing out there for grown-ups to see.
And the usual stuff? Who knows; "Transformers" does look kind of cool.

Kind of makes me feel the way I did earlier this month when "Hostel: Part II" bombed and all of the publications with much larger movie staffs suddenly ran articles about the end of the latest horror film cycle. That's something I observed was happening on this very blog all the way back in January (don't know how to link to it, but it should be accessible through our archive).
And in closing, I can categorically confirm that "Transformers" does indeed look very cool.
Gotta lock my ego back in its dungeon for the rest of summer now. Thanks for tolerating.
