More French Goodness Than You Can Probably Stand

Jacques Rivette's "Out 1" makes its L.A. premiere only 36 years late at UCLA's Billy Wilder Theatre in the Hammer Museum this weekend. The delay may have something to do with the film's length: 12 and a half hours.
If you can take it, though, this rare chance (it's only the fifth North American screening ever) to see one of the great masters of the French New Wave's key works is indispensible. As is often the case with Rivette ("Celine and Julie Go Boating," "La Belle Noiseuse"), it's a formally playful exploration of artistry and artifice, this time with large swaths of Aeschylus and Balzac referenced.
The two-day butt-numbathon starts at 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, with dinner breaks scheduled in for both evenings. The UCLA Film & Television Archive presents this ultimate cineastes' weekend treat in cooperation with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Los Angeles Filmforum and the Film and Television Department of the French Consulate.
