Reign make final cuts, set opening-day roster

Forwards Joel Irving, Tyler Mugford and Doug Spooner, and defenseman Cameron Cepek, became the Reign’s final training camp cuts Wednesday when the opening-day roster was submitted to the ECHL

Forwards Tony Voce (7-day), Todd Jackson (21-day) and Robert Pearce (21-day), and defenseman Dan Knapp (3-day), will begin the season on injured reserve.

Irving was the oldest camper at age 33. The 6-4, 225-pound winger had a 53-point ECHL season two years ago split between Bakersfield and Utah, but was quiet this preseason. The forward was held scoreless last Thursday in Las Vegas and took two minor penalties, the latter of which came 12 seconds after the first expired, and led to a Wranglers’ power-play goal in a 5-2 loss.

Cepek, a Huntington Beach native, made his pro debut last season in three games with the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters. A seventh-round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2006, Cepek “will be our first phone call, if he’s available when something happens and he’s still around in this area,” coach Karl Taylor said.

Mugford was the ECAC defensive player of the year last season as a senior at Cornell. The 6-1, 190-pounder also took back-to-back penalties in a preseason game, last Friday in Ontario, the first of which set up a Las Vegas goal. Mugford played both games and was held scoreless.

Spooner appeared in seven regular-season games last season for the Reign, scoring one goal, and was held scoreless last Thursday in his lone preseason game. The 6-3, 215-pound power forward also took yoga over the summer.
