Regina Pats name Teubert captain.

Former Reign defenseman Colten Teubert was named captain of his junior team, the Regina Pats, on Tuesday. The 19-year-old was previously an alternate captain for the Pats, for whom he has played since 2005-06. The Kings selected Teubert 13th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Teubert had one assist and a plus-5 rating in six games for silver medalist Canada at the World Junior Championships, which concluded last week.

Las Vegas 5, Reign 1.

The Reign’s winning streak was short-lived.

A day after snapping their franchise-record, seven-game losing streak, the Reign fell to the Las Vegas Wranglers, 5-1 at Orleans Arena. Jon Francisco scored the only goal for the Reign with 2:06 left in the third period.

The Reign (14-18-3-2) started well, outshooting the Wranglers (16-14-3-1) in the first period by a 19-6 margin. But they could not score, thanks to a near-perfect effort by goalie Michael Ouzas (41 saves).

Ned Lukacevic and Jason Hazelwood scored two goals apiece, and Mick Lawrence scored once, as the Wranglers rattled off five unanswered goals over the final two periods. Curtis Darling stopped 26 of 31 shots before he was pulled for Mike Zacharias with 9:51 left in the game. Zacharias stopped all 10 shots he faced.

The Reign don’t play again until Wednesday night, when they host the Bakersfield Condors at The Bank.

More details in tomorrow’s editions of the Sun and Daily Bulletin.

Reign 3, Las Vegas 2, OT.

It’s over.

The longest losing streak in the Reign’s (albeit brief) franchise history ended at seven games Friday night in Las Vegas, courtesy of a Jon Francisco goal at the 4:25 mark of overtime.

David Walker notched his fourth goal of the season with 1:08 remaining in regulation to send the game into the extra period. Tim Kraus opened the scoring at 12:36 of the first period with his sixth goal of the season, before Ned Lukacevic staked the Wranglers to a 2-1 lead with a pair of goals.

Curtis Darling stopped 37 of 39 shots for the Reign.

Reign trainer Walls among all-stars.

Reign head trainer/equipment manager Bobby Walls became an all-star Thursday, chosen among the equipment managers and athletic trainers for the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game and All-Star Skills Competition, Jan. 19-20 at The Bank.

In addition to Walls, the equipment managers are Mike Burkhead of the Alaska Aces for the National Conference and John Williams of the South Carolina Stingrays for the American Conference, while the athletic trainers are Mike Plandowski of the Utah Grizzlies for the National Conference and Bob Case of the Cincinnati Cyclones for the American Conference.

Walls is in his second season with the Reign after serving in a similar capacity for the Long Beach Ice Dogs. He worked for the Kings of the NHL as rehabilitation trainer and most recently as an assistant athletic trainer for the USC men’s basketball team.

Certified with the National Athletic Trainers Association and a certified Emergency Medical Technician, Walls received his bachelor’s degree in physical education with an emphasis on athletic training and a minor in biology from California State University Dominguez Hills. He was the head student trainer at Cerritos College from 1996-99 and was the head trainer at North Torrance High School from 1998-2002.

Las Vegas 2, Reign 1.

A pair of goals by the Wranglers, on back-to-back power plays in the second period, staked Las Vegas to a 2-0 lead before Michael Pelech halved the lead on a one-timer from the faceoff dot minutes later.

And that was it. No furious rally, not a lot of near misses, just the Reign’s seventh loss in a row before 4,072 at the Bank. Curtis Darling stopped 13 of 15. More details in tomorrow’s editions of the Sun and Bulletin.

Peralta arrives, practices.

Sal Peralta is in town and completed his first practice with the Reign today, skating on a line with Tony Voce and Jon Francisco. Check out tomorrow’s editions of the Sun and Daily Bulletin for the full scoop.

Here are a few items that won’t make the paper …

On his reaction to being traded: “I was kind of thrown off a little bit. I found out about it on ECHL.com. then I went to the rink. I think a move was necessary for me at the time, anyways. For being close to home, to flying across the continent is a little different.”

On coming to the Reign: “It’s great. I have experience playing against Coach Taylor in CIS, and I know they have a good team, a good reputation here in Ontario, great fans, obviously beautiful weather. I can’t wait to get started.”

On playing for three teams halfway through his first pro season: “It’s tough, but it’s part of the game. it’s tough on yourself and your family, because you don’t know where you’re going to be. You can’t make plans.”

On any feelings of revenge toward league rival Bakersfield, which cut him in the preseason: “I’m just going to play hard. Bakersfield had its own issues. They didn’t cut me because they felt I wasn’t good enough to play there, they just had a lot of guys coming back [from Anaheim’s NHL training camp]. So it was a numbers game there. You always want to stick and show the other teams why they shouldn’t have let you go, but I don’t want to get too worked up in it. I just want to play my game, let that do the talking, and help Ontario win some games.”

The rest of the forward lines from Tuesday:

Greg Hogeboom-Tim Kraus-Peter Lenes
Todd Jackson-Mike Howe-James McEwan
Chris Curran-Michael Pelech-Rob Pearce

What didn’t make the notebook …

In tomorrow’s notebook you’ll find a breakdown of the team’s franchise-record, six-game losing streak. New forward acquisition Sal Peralta has arrived in town and I expect to be able to catch up with him tomorrow after practice.

In the meantime, to tide you over, here are some notes that didn’t make the notebook …

Bakersfield 2, Reign 1, OT.

The Reign returned to California and pushed the Bakersfield Condors to overtime on the road, before losing their sixth straight game, 2-1 at Rabobank Arena.

A Michael Pelech slapshot eight seconds after a Reign power play had expired, at 14:56 of the first period, was the Reign’s only goal of the game.

The 1-0 lead held until 10:26 of the second period, when the Condors’ Maxime Macenauer scored off a long shot along the boards.

The Reign could not capitalize on a 2-minute long 5-on-3 power play spanning the second and third periods, then had to withstand an 85-second long 5-on-3 shift for Bakersfield. Darling preserved the tie with some clutch saves late in the third period, and finished with 34 saves as the Reign were out-shot 36-23.

In overtime, Reign defenseman David Walker was sent to the penalty box for slashing at the 50-second mark, and Bakersfield blueliner Sasha Pokulok netted the game winner 36 seconds later.

At 13-6-3-2, the Reign are 11 points back of Bakersfield (20-9-2-0) for first place in the Pacific Division. They’ll get four days off before hosting the Las Vegas Wranglers on Thursday at The Bank.
