Reign 2, Bakersfield 1.

Matt Tassone and Geoff Irwin scored the goals and Darcy Kuemper was Darcy Kuemper, making the easy saves look easy and the hard saves look easy while barely missing out on a shutout. He stopped 35 of 36.

Kuemper and the Reign should be glad they survived a night in which they were short-handed nine times, including all of the final 1:58. Bakersfield cashed in during a 6-on-3 shift when Justin Pender scored with 1:02 left but that was it for the Condors, who have lost eight in a row.

Check out the game story in tomorrow’s editions of the Sun and Bulletin. A few notes that won’t make the print edition:

• Philippe Seydoux’s flu symptoms haven’t abated enough to let him play. With him on IR, and Dylan Yeo, Mike Montgomery and JP Cote in the AHL, Shayne Neigum skated at left defense for the second straight day. He let loose on a couple good-looking, slapshots that reached the net later in the first period. He also went into a backwards-skating slide during the second period to break up a potential 2-on-1 rush for the Condors.

• All told, Neigum and Adrian Van de Mosselaer saw far less ice time than the pairs of Chris Huxley and Vincent LoVerde, and Pat Bowen and Steven Tarasuk, though Van de Mosselaer saw some penalty-kill time in his second game of the season.

• Seydoux remains day-to-day, while Jason Christie said he expects those AHL-employed defensemen back at some point soon. He specifically mentioned Montgomery, who is with the St. John’s IceCaps.

• It’s a couple days past the point of being news, but since I was out of town for Thanksgiving here’s the skinny on J-F Berube: He was struck somewhere in the upper body by a puck in practice Friday morning, injuring him badly enough to rule out backup duties Saturday in Bakersfield and tonight, but not badly enough to land him on IR. Dustin Carlson was signed and summoned — he was working out on the Ohio State campus with his former college teammates — and backed up Kuemper both nights. Berube’s injury is not believed to be a concussion; Christie said that Berube is officially day-to-day.

• Tristan King shuttled between a couple different lines and a couple different positions, but didn’t take regular shifts with any one line. Christie said he’s having a hard time breaking up the lines that are playing well together (which, right now, is all of them; the Reign were averaging 3.33 goals per game through Sunday, fifth in the ECHL).

• Kuemper has re-taken the ECHL lead in GAA (1.74) and save percentage (.941).

• The Reign went 2 for 4 on the power play and are second in the league in home power play percentage (26.2).

• With the team captain Yeo in Oklahoma City, rookie defenseman Chris Huxley was wearing an alternate captain’s “A”. Huxley was the captain at Harvard last season.

• The official scoresheet is here.
