The Reign have received defenseman Patrick Mullen from the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs and have been assigned defenseman Colten Teubert by the Kings. Both will be in uniform tonight when the Reign play the Bakersfield Condors tonight (6 p.m., Rabobank Arena).

Teubert was the Kings’ first-round draft pick (13th overall) in 2008 and finished last season with the Reign, notching two assists in 14 games between the regular season and the playoffs. The recently-turned 20-year-old just completed his final season with the Western Hockey League’s Regina Pats.

Mullen, 23, recorded three goals, eight points and 14 penalty minutes in 36 games during his rookie season with the Monarchs.

The 6-foot, 181-pound native of Pittsburgh played four years at the University of Denver. from 2005-09, collecting 81 points (20-61=81) and 148 penalty minutes in 152 games. The Kings signed Mullen two a two-year entry-level contract in April of last year and have been using him exclusively as a defenseman in Manchester after splitting time at forward in college.

Mullen’s father, Joe, played in the NHL for 16 seasons with four different teams (Blues, Flames, Penguins, Bruins). The first American-born hockey player to score 500 goals and register 1,000 points, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000.

The Web site Hockey’s Future didn’t have much to say about Mullen but rated him a 6.0, and ranked him as the 19th-best prospect in the Kings’ system.

Lombardi on Teubert, etc.

In an interview published today on Bleacher Report, Kings general manager Dean Lombardi discusses Colten Teubert, as well as many of the Kings’ prospects currently playing in the junior leagues.

Teubert joined the Reign late last season after his WHL season was over, and Lombardi talks about that.

We will follow up with Lombardi at some point about who might come to Ontario this season – but probably after the Olympics. Lombardi is an assistant GM for Team USA.

Former Reign defenseman Colten Teubert was named captain of his junior team, the Regina Pats, on Tuesday. The 19-year-old was previously an alternate captain for the Pats, for whom he has played since 2005-06. The Kings selected Teubert 13th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. 


Teubert had one assist and a plus-5 rating in six games for silver medalist Canada at the World Junior Championships, which concluded last week.

Based on the reputation that has followed him as a junior player in Canada, Wednesday’s announcement was a mere formality: Former Reign defenseman Colten Teubert will play for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships.

Teubert played in 14 games last season for the Reign, including both the regular season and the playoffs, collecting two assists and 19 penalty minutes. In 31 games for the Regina Pats this season, he has six goals, 24 assists and 55 penalty minutes.

The World Junior Championships will be held Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Regina, and Team Canada is seeking its sixth consecutive gold medal.

Karl Taylor has never brought back as many as five players on one defense from one year to the next as an ECHL coach. “Hopefully they’re the five good ones,” he joked.

Back are Shawn Germain, Dan Knapp, David Walker, Chad Starling and Andrew Martens. Gone are Darren McMillan (IHL), P.J. Atherton (Europe) and Colten Teubert (WHL). In their place are newcomers Cameron Cepek, Brian Kilburg and Mike Egener. Their average height: 6-foot-3. Though it’s possible that one or two would get cut before the regular-season opener, Taylor said he’s open to keeping all eight on the roster.

Bakersfield 1, Reign 0, end first period.

The Reign are leading this game in both scoring chances and mistakes, but the only goal is by Bakersfield defenseman Bruce Graham, a power-play goal 2:06 into the opening frame.

Both goalies have gotten lucky on a pair of nervous moments. At the 11:15 mark, Jeff Zatkoff came out of his net to play a puck, backhanded it behind the net with the Condors’ Mike Wirll closing in. Wirll got to the puck first and backhanded it between the circles, but no one was there to put it home into an empty net. Geoff Walker thought he had a goal when he rang a wrister off the crossbar at 14:17, but the linesman immediately ruled it no goal. This could easily be a 2-1 game.

The Reign finished with 13 shots on goal to the Condors’ 4, the best of which was a Colten Teubert gem after he made a nifty 1-on-1 move on the Bakersfield defender. Who knew he had the hands?
