Pasadena Greek Festival returns to Santa Anita Park

Leave your bags behind and take a quick trip to Arcadia from Sept. 16 to 18 for a taste of Grecian culture with the return of the Pasadena Greek Festival.

The weekend will include entertainment from the “Olympians,” visual art, authentic Greek cuisine and pastries, live cooking demonstrations, a live wine chat, Greek folk dancing and lectures about the country’s history and religion, as well as a kid’s fun zone with carnival games, rides and prizes.

Festival hours are from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Sept. 16; noon to 1 a.m. on Sept. 17; and noon to 10 p.m. on Sept. 18. Admission is $5 and children under 12 years old are free. Parking is $4 per car at the main entrance of Holly and Huntington Drive at Santa Anita Park.

Holly Street Bridge stars in ‘Criminal Minds’

Check your local listings. The Holly Street Bridge is making a special appearance on a future episode of the popular television series “Criminal Minds.”

The Pasadena bridge was shut down for several hours on Monday to shoot a scene for an episode that will air on Oct. 19.

The show, being filmed by ABC studios, is described on the Internet Movie Database as featuring an “elite group of profilers (who) analyze the nation’s most dangerous criminal minds in an effort to anticipate their next moves before they strike again.”

A farewell ‘Garage Sale’

As A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical
repertory theatre company, says farewell to Glendale, it is cleaning house before moving to its new home in Pasadena this fall and will hold a huge garage sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 13 at the Glendale location.

The sale will feature discounts on scenery, props, costumes, wigs,
furniture, lighting and lighting equipment, curtains, fabric, seating
and more.

The Glendale location has been ANW’s home for the last
19 years. Now, the company is in the final stretch of a $13.5 million capital
campaign for its anticipated 33,000 square-foot,
state-of-the-art venue in Pasadena, set to open Oct. 29. Tax
deductible donations for the capital campaign will also be accepted during the
garage sale.

Admission is $2. Cash is preferred for purchases but
credit cards will be accepted with a minimum purchase and subject to a
service charge.

Carmela expands its ‘adult’ flavors with splashes of wine

Carmela Ice Cream has paired up with wine retailer Domaine547 to create summer sorbets sure to please wine drinkers.

In its collaboration, the frozen dessert shop created two new flavors using Raventos i Blanc Sparkling Cava (Spain) and Caluna Malbec Blend (Argentina).

And to celebration this union, both companies will participate in a wine and sorbet social from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, at Domaine547, 6801 Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles.

L.A. Street Food Fest trucks brave Carmageddon to bring locals gourmet treats

With the 405 Freeway closure this weekend, the L.A. Street Food Fest in Pasadena is giving locals a reason to love being stuck in the area.

The summer tasting event on Saturday, July 16, will include an impressive list of more than 60 restaurants and food trucks, some of which are voyaging from the west side (the reason why the festival canceled its morning session), to bring gourmet street food to the Rose Bowl, located at 1001 Rose Bowl Drive.

A few favorites include Dim Sum Truck, CoolHaus dessert truck, CHAM Korean Bistro restaurant, The Oinkster restaurant and, even, Chef Farid Zadi (at the Test Kitchen Luxe Lounge).

For those looking for a drink to pair with your foods, there is also a tequila tasting tent and beer garden, as well as a rum and gin bar.

Tickets, ranging from $60 and up, are still on sale for two sessions — Family Fun Day from 2 to 5 p.m. (all ages) and Date Night from 6 to 9 p.m. (21 years and over only). Admission includes food, drinks, photo booth portraits, entertainment and more.

1886 Bar pops the cork on happy hour today

1886 Bar at The Raymond is joining the happy hour tradition with its own Parlor Hour, starting today.

From 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, the bar offers specials – including $7 craft cocktails, $6 glasses of 1886 Champagne Punch, $4 bottled beers and $5 wines by the glass.

The weekly event was named in remembrance of one of the hotel’s former rooms, called The Parlor, when The Raymond was known as Royal Raymond.
