Old Pasadena Happy Hour Week starts tomorrow

Old Pasadena Happy Hour Week starts tomorrow. A number of Pasadena restaurants, bars and lounges will be hosting extended drink and grub specials from March 1-March 8. Getting in on the act are Vertical Wine Bistro, Point08 Bar and The Otis Bar at La Grande Orange Cafe.
Most drink specials are priced in the $2-$8 range.
Equator Cafe is offering the first martini for $1 on Tuesdays, from 4 p.m.-close, during Happy Hour Week. On weekend days from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., the cafe also has $10 bottomless champagne or mimosas with brunch.
The Scarlet Tea Room & Fine Dining, pictured at top, will serve red and white wine, mimosas, sangria and hibiscus cocktails for $5 a pop.

DISH Bistro & Bar on Union Street in Old Pasadena reportedly shuttered

There are reports popping up on Chowhound and Yelp that DISH Bistro & Bar on East Union Street has shuttered.
The restaurant’s website has been taken down, and the phone line is disconnected.
The eatery opened in February 2010 and pulled in some regular customers right off the bat, owner David Johnson told us in June of last year. We wrote then of a mini-resurgence on that area of East Union, with newcomers like DISH, Quadrupel Brasserie and POP Champagne & Dessert Bar all opening within a relatively close time span.
On Chowhound, commenter Bradbury calls Old Pasadena the “Bermuda Triangle of good restaurants.” What do you think? Is this yet another case of a good restaurant claimed by a bad economy? Something else?

Conduct your own taste test, starting with two selections from the M Collection: ginger sea salt chocolates (a dark-chocolate shell filled with luscious ginger dark chocolate ganache and topped with lime-infused sea salt) and lavender chocolates (also a ganache-infused dark-chocolate shell with the complex sweetness of woodsy lavender).
Mignon’s signature treat is its box of orange-peel strips, baked in heavy syrup and coated in dark chocolate. Another favorite is the saffron marzipan, which is created in-house with diced orange peels and infused with saffron. The family has been handmaking the latter since the 1930s.
In the Los Angeles area, Mignon also runs locations in Glendale and Van Nuys. An international outpost is located in Tehran.

In an alleyway just off Colorado Boulevard, it’s not unusual to see people trailing their dogs on leashes as they zip in and out of this shop for canine baked goods.

When it comes to all-natural, oven-baked treats and fresh food for dogs, the international chain Three Dog Bakery is the bona fide (bone-ified?) deal, with a strong SoCal presence even beyond its Pasadena storefront. For your four-legged friend’s next special event, consider a fresh-made and customized doggie birthday cake.

Dining: iX tapa Cantina is a boisterous, urban watering hole

Food writer Merrill Shindler recently tackled the phonetically-challenging iX tapa Cantina, a newcomer to the Colorado Boulevard dining scene.

He, first, found that the eatery’s name brought out his inner grammar curmudgeon:


Look: You’ll forgive me if I spell it “Ixtapa.” Apparently, the spelling chosen by the Jack and Karen Huang, the restaurateurs who opened this Urban Chic Cantina, is the somewhat keyboard-unfriendly “iX tapa,” which will drive me to madness. And it’s apparently caused those who note restaurant openings on the Web to sprain all ten fingers. Take a look, and you’ll find “Ix Tapa,” “ix tapa,” “IX Tapa,” “Ixtapa” — the variations go on and on.
