Giving it a college try

That's what I tried to do last week, but I ended up looking like a chump. Guided by the clutch South Carolina cover on Thursday, I'll try to build on that. At the very least, I'll try to avoid the misery of the Angels and Yankees fans in my office. Here's some picks now, and some more picks after I go to Friday's in Ontario.

Stanford (+40.5) at USC
Normally I wouldn't advise anyone to lay 40 points, but with the way Jim Harbaugh was mouthing off about USC in the offseason, the Trojans might look to stick it to Stanford a bit. I still can't bring myself to do it, though it will be close.
USC 45, Stanford 6

Notre Dame (+22) at UCLA
After talking to my buddy Clay Fowler, he said there was no sign of Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen at Diamond Ranch High School on Thursday night, although his alma mater, Oaks Christian, was there playing. At the very least, he should have gone just to remember what winning felt like. God knows he's forgotten.
UCLA 34, Notre Dame 10

Florida (+7) at LSU
This line has lessened over the last couple of days, despite LSU playing at night, where the crowd is 80 proof and Death Valley is rocking and rolling. If you don't believe me, read this.
Anyway, Florida will come out hyped and although Arroyo Valley graduate Marc Garcia says the Gators will win, LSU will hold them off.
Garcia's pick: Florida 23, LSU 20
The real pick: LSU 20, Florida 14

Oklahoma (-12) vs. Texas
Before I get into this game, I have to say that the Cotton Bowl is the worst stadium in America. I covered this game four years ago at one of my old stops and had to deal with broken press box bathrooms. Before you call me a spoiled sportswriter, imagine going into one of the regular bathrooms filled with people who have been partying at the Texas State Fair all day and who were more drunk than LSU fans. If you are a Texas fan, you might want to be slamming Lone Stars, because this won't be pretty.
Oklahoma 35, Texas 16

Ohio State (-7) at Purdue
Ohio State has been pretty good in recent years, but West Lafayette hasn't been kind to the Buckeyes. Troy Smith lost the first game of his career at Purdue in 2004, while the Buckeyes needed a miracle pass from Craig Krenzel to Michael Jenkins to avoid the upset in their national title season of 2002. So you can probably see where I'm going with this. Purdue pulls the shocker (I hope).
Purdue 28, Ohio State 27

Virginia Tech (+5.5) at Clemson
This line just seems wrong. Virginia Tech, while offensively decrepit, have quite a defense and Clemson has never been confused for a team that wins a big game. So the Hokies will come in and take care of business and Clemson will still wear orange.
Virginia Tech 17, Clemson 13
