Colton girls soccer takes SAL lead

This was meant to be in the paper today, but there was a snafu. I will say I was impressed by the Yellowjackets yesterday and the overall quality of the soccer between the two teams. But editorial comments aside, here it is..

Colton High School girls soccer coach Diego Garcia has made following shots a key point of emphasis all season, harping on it constantly.
Colton heeded its coach’s word in a showdown with San Gorgonio Tuesday and because of that, a league title may be the next thing to follow.
Roxanne Pardo’s goal on a followup from a header attempt in the 34th minute spurred the visiting Yellowjackets to a 3-0 victory over the Spartans at Phil Haley Stadium and sole possession of first place in the San Andreas League.
Denise Galaviz and Brianna Burns scored late in the second half to give the Yellowjackets (15-4-2 overall, 5-0-2 SAL) some insurance, but the key goal came thanks to a great deal of persistence.
“We talk about it in practice every day,” Garcia said. “I tell these girls how important it is to follow your shots because you create your own breaks. We’ve done well in that in the games that we’ve won.”
In a scoreless game that was even in its up-and-down nature, Colton got a free kick 40 yards out after a San G foul. Senior midfielder Paulina Hernandez, who had two assists, delivered a perfect through ball into in San G penalty box, which Pardo headed toward San G goalkeeper Chanel Abelon.
Abelon fumbled the header around, eventually letting it hit the turf. Pardo tapped it in to give Colton the lead.
“I was really surprised,” Pardo said. “I was looking to head the ball because Paulina always gives good balls. I got a good piece of it and followed it like coach said. It was a total lucky goal.”
It was a goal that stood up thanks to a physical Colton defense, which kept the Spartans (5-11-5, 4-1-2) from getting much offensive production from the forwards.
The resulting frustration boiled over in the 64th minute, as junior forward Dana Mackamul was given a red-card ejection after kicking a Colton player on the ground in a scrum. Because of the ejection, Mackamul will be sidelined for Thursday’s game at San Bernardino.
Down a man and a goal, San G was unable to generate much after that, giving up goals in the 68th and 74th minutes, respectively.
“We moved a player up after we lost Dana,” San G coach Chris Sarenana said. “I thought we fought hard and gave them a good game. Colton is a tough team and I’m proud of our effort.”

Dominick Reyes update

Dominick Reyes, a first-team all-County pick at safety and the Mojave River League Defensive MVP, made an official visit to Colorado State last week and is hoping to receive an offer from the Rams according to Hesperia coach Robert Kistner.

Reyes, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound senior, was offered by the Rams under former CSU coach Sonny Lubick, but that offer was tabeled when Lubick retired and Steve Fairchild was hired in his stead. Fairchild, previously the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, got off to a later start as he had to wait until the conclusion of the NFL season before starting his Colorado State duties.
"Dominick liked his visit and thought it went well," Kistner said. "We are just waiting to see what they'll do. They said they'd be in contact with us."
Reyes, who is also an accomplished wrestler, also had a scholarship offer from Washington State in the preseason that disappeared once former WSU coach Bill Doba resigned in November. That offer hasn't re-materialized, but Reyes is receiving interest from SUNY-Stony Brook in New York.
"Stony Brook is interested, but Colorado State is the school Dominick is really waiting on," Kistner said. "We want to see what comes from that before taking any other offers."

Wooten switches commitment to Nevada

Carter High School senior Khalid Wooten, who verbally committed to UTEP in December, has decided to commit to the University of Nevada instead.

Wooten, an all-Citrus Belt League quarterback at Carter who is expected to play defensive back in college, made the decision late this week to commit to the Wolfpack.
"I feel that Nevada is just a better place for me," Wooten said after Saturday's Southern California Bowl in Fullerton. "It's nothing against UTEP, but the more I thought about it the more I felt comfortable at Nevada."
Wooten notified UTEP of his decision Friday and indicated that the Miners suggested that he take the weekend to reflect before officially switching. Wooten didn't need much time to reflect though.
"They wanted me to sleep on it, but I'm comfortable with my decision," Wooten said. "(UTEP) was kind of talking down Nevada, which I didn't like. I know that this is the right decision for me."
Wooten announced the decision after playing defensive back for the Inland Marine All-Stars in their 27-13 victory over the Coastal Navy All-Stars Saturday. Wooten was in on a few tackles and recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter to basically seal the Inland team's victory.

NFL picks - Championship week style

Here's to some really frigging cold weather. Football is definitely more fun the worse the weather is.

San Diego (+14) over NEW ENGLAND (Pats win and its not really close, but two touchdowns is too much to give)
GREEN BAY (-7.5) over N.Y. Giants (I can't see Eli and the Giants performing well in below-zero weather).

Brown, Fuller on recruiting trail

The Arroyo Valley duo of defensive end Keenan Brown and quarterback Robert Fuller have recently returned from an official visit to Idaho State, according to AVHS coach Tony DiThomas.

Brown, a first-team All-County selection at DE, is visiting Utah State this upcoming weekend and has a trip lined up to San Jose State before National Signing Day on Feb. 6. Fuller, the CIF-SS Central Division's offensive MVP and a second-team All-County selection at QB, will be visiting Utah State with Brown.

Other Hawks on the recruiting trail include defensive back Ansley Jackson, a third-team All-County selection who has received interest from schools such as Northern Arizona.

Colton updates

I just got off the phone with Harold Strauss and he gave me a little update on some of Colton's seniors and their college prospects.

All-County first-team offensive lineman Daniel Bernard has scheduled an official visit to Louisiana Tech tonight, which is funny considering that his father played at La. Tech with Terry Bradshaw. There's a good possibility that Bernard may verbally commit to the Bulldogs.

Another first-team All-County player, running back Travell Washington, is expected to take a visit to Eastern Washington soon. EWU has been high on Washington's list, which also includes Idaho and Idaho State according to Strauss.

As far as Nick Reyes, a second-team selection at running back, he has an official offer from Nevada and is receiving interest from Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Idaho and Clemson, among others.

Playoff picks

The more I think about it, the more I think the people who think the Jags are going to win outright this weekend at undefeated New England are dreadfully wrong. I was thinking it was a possiblity until I saw Ben Roethlisberger slice up the Jags like swiss cheese in the second half last week. Not a good sign.

OK, I divulged my pick in that game, but here's the rest of my picks.

GREEN BAY (-7.5) over Seattle
NEW ENGLAND (-13) over Jacksonville
INDIANAPOLIS (-9.5) over San Diego
N.Y. Giants (+7.5) over DALLAS

Brehaut impresses at US Army all-American combine

Los Osos quarterback Richard Brehaut flew to San Antonio, Texas this weekend to take part in the junior combine held in conjunction with the US Army All-American all-star game this past Saturday.

Brehaut, according to Scout.com's Brandon Huffman relayed through Upland assistant coach Mike Esquivel, had the strongest performance of the West quarterbacks in the combine, building off a junior season in which he threw for 2,248 yards and 22 touchdowns while adding 556 yards and five TDs rushing. Brehaut receiving first-team all-Baseline League honors, along with second team all-Inland Valley and third team All-County honors.

Upland junior quarterback Josh Nunes and Los Osos junior running back Arby Fields were also invited to the combined according to Esquivel, but did not attend.

Miners nab Wooten

UTEP has been busy in the Inland Empire during this recruiting season, as the Miners got a verbal commitment from Carter quarterback Khalid Wooten in December.

Wooten, who will likely play defensive back at UTEP, led the Lions to playoff berths in consecutive seasons. The first-team all-Citrus Belt League pick ran for 751 yards and seven touchdowns and threw for 808 yards and another two touchdowns despite missing nearly three full games due to injury.

Wooten is one of two CBL players to commit to UTEP, coached by former Washington State head man Mike Price. Redlands East Valley defensive end/linebacker Josh Scott has almost verbally committed to the school.

Scott is the third Wildcat to verbally commit to a Division I school, joining running back Chris Polk (Washington) and defensive lineman Quentin Toailoa (Nebraska).
