El Toro wins

REV gets a two-out single from Paul Eshleman, their fourth hit of the day, but weren't able to build on it, as El Toro wins 7-0 and grabs the D2 CIF championship.

Three more for El Toro

An Andrew Marian bases-clearing triple took any suspense left from the proceedings, giving El Toro a 7-0 lead. The runners reached on an error and two walks.

Bottom of the seventh right now.

Down to three outs

REV went scoreless again in the seventh, leaving themselves in a horrible position going into the final inning. The Wildcats got one on base when Eric Young was hit by a Zeigler pitch, but that was all they muster against the left, who has only given up three hits.

4-0 El Toro, one inning to go.

Two more for Toro

REV is up against it now, as an RBI single by Donohoe and a wild pitch plated two more El Toro runs. Both plays came via relief pitcher Jeremy Perez, who relieved Chatwood with one out after Chatwood issued a walk to Jensen.

Perez, a reliable late-inning left-hander for the Wildcats, induced a fly to right, but walked Fierro and gave up a single to Donohoe, which scored Jensen. The single was booted in left, allowing Fierro to go to third. That proved costly, as a high wild pitch allowed Fierro to score before REV got out of the inning.

4-0 El Toro going into the bottom of the sixth.

Nifty fielding for Chargers

El Toro ended the fifth with a nifty 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Tyler Chatwood, capped off by a beautiful pick out of the dirt by Penprase at first. Matt Boeger singled before being doubled off, REV's third hit off Zeigler.

2-0 El Toro going into the sixth.

No real change

Chatwood induced two groundouts to short before giving up his fourth hit, a single by Arenado to left. However, Arenado was gunned down on an attempted steal of second by REV catcher Paul Eshleman to end the inning.

2-0 El Toro going into the bottom of the fifth.

Another opportunity lost for REV

After Zeigler retired the first two batters, the Wildcats built a two-out rally off a single by Burcroff and a walk to Matt Andriese. Josh Salmon couldn't get the big hit though, flying to right to end the threat.

2-0 El Toro going into the fifth.

Chatwood comes back firing

After giving up the two third-inning runs, Chatwood responded with his first 1-2-3 inning in the fourth. After getting Fierro to ground out, the senior fanned Donohoe and Andersen. Through four innings pitched, Chatwood has struck out seven.

2-0 El Toro going into the bottom of the fourth.

Quick 1-2-3

REV didn't answer El Toro's two runs in the top of the inning, going down 1-2-3 for the first time all night. After Matt Boeger and Chatwood were retired on the inning's first two pitches, Tyler Zeigler got Jeremy Perez to strike out looking.

2-0 El Toro going into the fourth.

El Toro jumps on top

After Chatwood struck out his fifth batter, the Chargers lit him up for a couple of runs to take the lead. He walked Penprase and gave up a sharp single by Arenado to set up Barnhill, who hit a sharp-line drive single to right.

Barnhill's single brought in Penprase and Arenado, with the second runner scoring when David Andriese bobbled the ball in right. Andriese was given an error on the play.

The last two batters were retired, but the damage was done. 2-0 El Toro going into the bottom of the third.

Still no score

The Wildcats did get a runner on in the second, as Josh Salmon reached on an error by El Toro third baseman Trevor Jensen. However, two fly outs to center and a caught stealing in which pinch-runner Scott Morgan was caught leaning off first nullified it.

On an interesting note, El Toro centerfielder Andrew Wellman seems to be struggling picking up the ball off the bat, heading back before having to rush into shallow center to catch both fly outs. Something to watch for later perhaps.

0-0 going into the third.

Chatwood strikes out side

REV's star pitcher looks to be getting in a groove, as he struck out Andrew Marian, Austin Fierro and Grant Andersen swinging while giving up a single to Garrett Donohoe. Chatwood has four strikeouts to one walk and one hit through two.

Going into the bottom of 2nd with the game tied 0-0.

REV threatens in bottom of first, doesn't score

Tyler Chatwood led off things for the Wildcats with a double to right just past the outstretched glove of El Toro's Austin Fierro. Jeremy Perez flew out to center and David Andriese walked before Eric Young bounced out to first, moving Chatwood and Andriese to third and second, respectively. However, Tyler Zeigler induced a Ryan Burcroff ground out to second, ending the threat.

Going to the second tied at 0-0.

top of the first

Tyler Chatwood started off slow, walking Dillon Penprase and giving up a long fly out to Nolan Arenado along the right-centerfield warning track, but responded by striking out Michael Barnhill and getting Trevor Jensen to ground to second. Ryne Sutherland made a nice diving stop to get Jensen.

0-0, going to the bottom of the first.

REV goes to Chavez Ravine

And I get to follow. This will be the first of however many blogs I write from Dodger Stadium as I participate in REV's adventurous trip to a (possible) CIF title. With that said, the trip to Dodger Stadium wasn't nearly as daunting as I thought it would be.

At the advice of my superiors, I left the office in Ontario at 5 p.m. I had been to Dodger Stadium one time for a game (a game where I saw Robert Patrick - the bad Terminator from Terminator 2 - LC from Laguna Beach and the Hills (quite hot), and the Miz from Real World: Back to New York and countless Real World/Road Rules Challenges), but I was still wary of the legendary Dodger Stadium traffic situation.

But surprisingly, I made it to Dodger Stadium at 5:45 - a full 105 minutes from scheduled first pitch. I had no real interest in being at the park that early - for good reason, as the game is 25 minutes from starting as I write this drivel - so I hung a right and decided to have a meal in Chinatown.

As I'm driving through Chinatown, I see a sign for Foo Chow restaurant - which is the establishment that Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan make a mockery of in Rush Hour. Of course, that made it an obvious choice for dinner. It was much smaller and less colorful than it looked in the movie, but the General Zor's Chicken I had was pretty darn tasty. Definitely tastier than the Dodger Dogs that the rest of the media is shoveling into their mouths as I type.

Anyway, I find it ridiculous that this game is supposed to start at 8 p.m., as the previous game - a Division III title tilt won by Sherman Oaks Notre Dame over West Covina South Hills 4-2 - concluded at 6:45. While no one really cares about a newspaper's deadline besides the actual newspaper - there's no reason to wait 75 minutes in between games. If the major leagues can clear a stadium in 35 minutes in between games of a doubleheader, there's no way a high school game needs an extra 40 minutes. Right now someone is taking pictures of the umpires on the field as I see the time before I send in a quoteless gamer dissipate before my eyes.

There, I got all that out of my system, so let's plays ball. They are now announcing the teams, which should take another 15-30 minutes.

Brehaut commits to UCLA

I checked my e-mail when I woke up the morning, er. afternoon (it is a holiday after all) and got a message that Los Osos quarterback Richard Brehaut verbally committed to play at UCLA this morning. Brehaut, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound incoming senior, was offered by the Bruins after winning the MVP of the Steve Clarkson quarterback camp, a camp also attended by Upland's Josh Nunes.

Brehaut is the first quarterback commit of the Rick Neuheisel-Norm Chow era at UCLA. There is a Rivals.com story (only available to Rivals subscribers) and we'll have our own take later today.

Brehaut MVP at Nike Palo Alto Event

Los Osos quarterback Richard Brehaut made a big statement to college recruiters Saturday at the Nike Training Camp in Palo Alto, as he was named the MVP of the quarterbacks. Brehaut was the best of a talented group that included Upland's Josh Nunes, San Diego Scripps Ranch's Tate Forcier and Oceanside's Jordan Wynn. There is an article on Rivals.com about it, but it's only for paying customers.

Brehaut, Forcier and Nunes are all rated in the Rivals top 250, with Nunes clocking in at No. 151 and Brehaut at No. 160. Nunes has received 18 scholarship offers, most recently from Tennessee and SMU, while Brehaut is sporting nine offers, mostly recently coming from Iowa State and Oregon State.

San Bernardino Combine

Lost in the hubbub between preliminary track meets and football all-star games was the National Football Foundation San Bernardino County Live Action and Combine. The combine, held Saturday at SBVC, saw many of the area's top sophomore and junior football prospects compete in position drills and speed work.

The article, which can be clicked on here, highlights local athletes such as offensive tackle Michael Philipp (Arroyo Valley), running back Arby Fields (Los Osos), defensive back Gary Walker (REV), and wide receiver David Quiroga (Ayala).

Brown, Chavarria awarded scholarships

Arroyo Valley High School defensive end Keenan Brown and Eisenhower basketball player David Chavarria were each awarded scholarships Friday at the Sport Foundation's Banquet.

The banquet, which runs the night before the Inland Empire All-Star Football Classic, saw Brown awarded a $1,000 scholarship and Chavarria awarded the Rose and Frank Wolsztyiniak Memorial Scholarship, worth $500.

The Riverside scholarships were awarded to Santiago's Ryan Berry ($1,000) and Murrieta Valley's Ian Massey ($500). Riverside Poly trainer Jennifer Barnard was given the Sports Medicine Scholarship, worth $500.

Department of corrections department

In my preview of today's Inland Empire All-Star Football Classic, I incorrectly wrote that Cajon assistant coach Tony DiThomas and Eisenhower head coach John Rice were coordinating the offense and defense, respectively, for tomorrow's game. DiThomas and Rice are assisting with both areas of the ball, but the Miller staff, led by coach Jeff Steinberg, will be doing the coordinating for the San Bernardino county team in Saturday's game.

Kistner refutes rumors

Hesperia football coach Robert Kistner, the all-County Coach of the Year this past season, wasn't surprised when I called him tonight to address rumor of him leaving the Scorpions to coach in North Bend, Oregon. Apparently, he's heard them too.

"Yeah I've heard them," Kistner said. "I did go up to Oregon last week, but I didn't interview for a job. I went up there, saw a couple of friends and went fishing."

Kistner didn't reel in any big fish and apparently, didn't cast a line out toward the open job in North Bend. Instead, he is turning his attention to spring practice, the Scorpions' first on-field action since ending a 9-2 season with a loss to Riverside King in the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Eastern Division playoffs. Spring practice starts Monday at Hesperia and will run for two weeks.

"I'm excited to get back out there," Kistner said. "Spring practice isn't as big of a deal for us because we end school early (May 30), but it will be good to see the kids out on the field and work on some of the basics."

Baseline trio receives scholarship offers

Roughly a week after announcing that he would pare his prospective-school list to five by Memorial Day, Upland quarterback Josh Nunes received a scholarship offer from one of the premier Division I schools in the land, as Oklahoma became the 16th school to offer him a spot. The Sooners join Colorado, Nebraska and Texas Tech as Big 12 schools courting the 6-foot-4 incoming senior signalcaller.

Highlander cornerback Osahon Irabor is also starting to pick up some recruiting momentum, with Wyoming recently offering him a scholarship. That bumps Irabor up to five scholarship offers, with the Cowboys joining Arizona, Arizona State, California and Oregon.

Los Osos quarterback Richard Brehaut also received an offer recently, with Kansas offering him a scholarship last week. Brehaut's offer list is up to seven now, with the Jayhawks joining Arizona, Boise State, Colorado, Louisville, San Diego State and Washington State.

Thompkins clarifies stance

In the wake of Tuesday's story in the Sun regarding Redlands East Valley's inquiry into the transfer of Gary Walker from Rialto to Redlands East Valley, Eisenhower principal Reggie Thompkins, the Citrus Belt League's liaison to the CIF, stated that he did not approve or disapprove of REV's findings.

"I accepted the report from the principal and forwarded it to CIF," Thompkins said Tuesday morning. "I don't do my own review because that's not my role, My job is to get the paperwork to CIF so they can look it over and make whatever ruling they see as fair."

Thompkins also wanted to reiterate that REV internal inquiry about the case is just one step in the entire process.

"The CIF has not approved anything yet," Thompkins said. "They just have the paperwork that was sent to them."

REV inquiry concludes

By T.J. Berka
Staff Writer

An inquiry conducted by Redlands East Valley principal John Maloney into the transfer of junior football player Gary Walker from Rialto to Redlands East Valley found that Walker's transfer was in accordance with CIF rules, according to documents sent to Reggie Thompkins, the Citrus Belt League's liaison to the CIF.
Thompkins, the principal of Eisenhower High School, said that the report from REV was at the office Monday morning and could have been filed as early as Friday afternoon. Thompkins forwarded the report to CIF.
"The report was on my desk this morning," Thompkins said. "The principals of both high schools looked into it and according to the information that they have, there wasn't any violation of CIF rules."
Walker, a first-team all-Citrus Belt and third-team all-county selection this past season, started his athletic career at Redlands East Valley before moving with his family to Rialto for his sophomore and junior year. He moved back into the REV area after the football season concluded.
"As far as we are concerned, it's a legitimate move," Rialto Unified School District spokesperson Syeda Jafri said. "We wish (the Walkers) well."
Neither Maloney or REV athletic director Rhonda Fouch would comment on the inquiry, but according to Thompkins, the investigation was a joint effort between Maloney and Rialto principal Mehran Akhtarhavari - which is exactly how the process should play out in his opinion.
"The principals are the agents of the school," Thompkins said. "When you have a situation like this, its the principals job to meet, look into it and make sure everyone agrees. Both parties did that wonderfully and allowed the process to play out. My job is to arrange the meetings when the rumors get out of hand."
When asked about the frequency and content of the rumors, Thompkins chose not to comment.

CBL Track story

Not sure if this got in due to the computer fiascos of the past couple of days, but here it is in all its glory.

By T.J. Berka
Staff Writer
COLTON - Ever since Desiree Justine Martha-Hulum passed away due to leukemia two years ago, Carter High School senior April Pate has kept her best friend in her thoughts.
Wearing a black t-shirt honoring Martha-Hulum at Thursday's Citrus Belt League meet, Pate excelled in a way that would have made Martha-Hulum proud, winning the 100 and 300 hurdles.
Coupled with her win Wednesday in the triple jump, Pate was the only athlete to win three individual events in advancing to next Saturday's CIF-SS Division I preliminaries at Trabuco Hills. As she was pulling the trifecta, her mind was focused on her late friend.
"Every time I go out, I dedicate what I do to her," Pate said. "I keep her in my mind everyday. She's my best friend."
Pate's winning time of 44.04 seconds in the 300 hurdles was good enough to set the league meet record. It was one of two records that were set at Colton High School Thursday, as Elizabeth Ramos' time of 11:13.69 in the 3,200-meter run also set a meet record.
Ramos keyed a Redlands sweep of the distance events, as senior Meredith Robie won the 800 and mile events. Robie's run in the 800 was especially riveting, as she went wire-to-wire with junior teammate Lauren Jacobs at the end, lunging across the line just ahead of Jacobs in a photo finish to win the race by a mere five-hundredths of a second.
"We weren't really worried about who was going to win the race," Robie said. "Right after, we looked at each other saying 'I think you won it.' We really didn't know and we didn't really care. Lauren and I just want to push each other and make sure we finish top 2."
Robie barely lost out in a close finish in the mile relay, finishing .16 seconds behind Eisenhower's Samia Sailinuu. Ike also won the 400 relay and had two individual athletes, Clinay Cameron (girls shot put and discus) and Marquis Pilcher (200 and 400), take multiple events.
It was a solid day for Pilcher, who is in his first year of competitive track at Ike. Besides winning the individual events, the senior participated on the Eagles' second-place 400 and mile relays.
"I wanted to get the relays, but it was a pretty good day," Pilcher said. "I just trying to go out there and get better every time, learn something new every time I run."
Pilcher and the Eagles finished behind Miller in both relays. The Rebels also won both boys hurdles events, with Brandon Skinner taking the 110 in 15.50 seconds and Ramiro Alvarez prevailing in the 300 hurdles in 39.88 seconds.
Boys league champion Redlands East Valley won four events, with Anthony Viola notching wins in the high jump (6-foot-7) and the triple jump (44-2 ½). Andrew Tyler won the 800 in 2:00.12 while Matt MacKenzie won the 1,600 with a time of 4:28.47.
