Because of snow in the mountains yesterday, the Division 6-A semifinal between Calvary Baptist and Lake Arrowhead Christian was postponed until tomorrow. It will be played at 6 p.m. at the Pinecrest Conference Center in Twin Peaks.
Moving on to the games that were played. Summit made the big move, upsetting No. 1 seed Canyon Springs 72-71 in Division 1-A to make its second CIF final in three seasons. Announcements of times and sites for the title games in both the boys and girls divisions will come at noon tomorrow.

Today was a bloody day for every county team but Oak Hills. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in Division 6, defeated Maranatha today and now head to O.J. Simpson's old stomping grounds Tuesday for a semifinal matchup with Brentwood. Pretty crazy that the youngest team in the playoffs is the only one left.

It's come to my attention that REV senior quarterback/shortstop Tyler Shreve has been arrested for assault after physically attacking Wildcats baseball coach James Cordes during practice Wednesday. Redlands Daily Facts reporter Jesse Gill has been on this story from the jump and reported that Shreve attacked Cordes after being dismissed from the team for an undisclosed reason.
Gill's story can be read here. It's an updated version of the one that was linked earlier and includes a statement from Shreve on the incident.
One of the subplots of the story is Shreve's football scholarship to the University of Utah, which is sure to be in jeopardy after this incident. Gill contacted the university, which is in the process of reviewing the incident at this time.
Just catching up a bit from yesterday. Also, look for update site information for the boys games in that entry. Semifinals will be played Saturday.

Redlands kicker/punter Shaun McClain, an all-CIF and all-Sun performer, has signed with Weber State after an official visit to the Ogden, Utah campus this past weekend according to his parents and Redlands assistant coach Kevin Haugh.
McClain chose Weber State over Montana State, who he had temporarily committed to around National Signing Day. He is the fourth Terrier to sign a letter of intent with a Division I school, joining linebacker Jordan Thomas (San Diego State), offensive lineman Justin Corrales (Bryant University) and linebacker Cole Gridley (Valparaiso).
Was covering minor league hockey today, therefore I apologize for the lateness. Games to be played Wednesday.

Five different leagues (De Anza, Desert Sky, Mojave River, Mt. Baldy and Sunkist) with San Bernardino County schools will be sending wrestlers to Oxnard Pacifica High for the CIF-SS Northern Division individual championships on Friday and Saturday.
Four of those leagues: Desert Sky, Mojave River, Mt. Baldy and Sunkist all have wrestlers who are seeded among the top five in their weight class. The top five in each weight class advance to the CIF-SS Masters Meet next week.
Of the 70 wrestlers in the division seeded in the top five, 37 are from San Bernardino County.
Montclair leads county schools with top five seeds, (seven), followed by Bloomington and Colony (five), Sultana (four), Barstow, Victor Valley and Hesperia (three), Kaiser (two), Ontario (two), and one each for Granite Hills, Apple Valley and Rim of the World.
Six of the 14 top-seeded wrestlers in the division are also from the county: Barstow's Sean Silva (112), Hesperia's Ivan Pinto (125), Bloomington's Phillip Hendrix (130), Montclair's Joseph Martinez (135), Hesperia's Chris Sloat (160) and Sultana's Manuel Mazariegos (heavyweight).
An interesting twist in the Division 5 boys soccer playoffs presents itself today, as the Mojave River League and San Andreas League face off in three separate first-round games.
Two of the games, Pacific at D5 No. 2-seed Hesperia and San Gorgonio at Serrano, will take place in the High Desert while Apple Valley will travel down the hill to face SAL champion Cajon. Both Pacific and Apple Valley helped create this unusual triumvirate by winning their wild-card games Tuesday, as Pacific defeated visited Monrovia 2-1 while the Sun Devils went on the road to beat Salton City West Shores 3-1.
It's almost similar to college bowl season, as two of the more notable league in the area get to butt heads in postseason play - definitely providing a juicy little subplot to the boys soccer playoffs.
The search for Colton's next football coach is close to reaching its next stage according to Yellowjackets athletic director Harold Strauss. The job, which opened at the end of January, will say open until Tuesday, with interviews set to take place shortly after.
"It's going well," Strauss said. "I wasn't sure how much interest we'd get because of the economy, but we have a good list going. We have 2 or 3 out-of-staters -- one from South Carolina and a couple more from the East Coast -- which is surprising."
Along with the coaching position, Strauss indicated that senior cornerback Jonathan Mack will likely take official visits to Southern Miss and South Dakota State. Mack, who committed to UNLV, has not signed yet, as the Rebels are looking to see if scholarship room can be cleared for him. In the interim, Mack is pursuing other options.
Also, junior linebacker Rodney Hardrick is receiving heavy interest from USC, Oregon and Boise State according to Strauss, with the Trojans expected to offer a scholarship at their junior day later this month.
This sport returns a defending champion, as Mojave River League champion Sultana will try to defend its Division 4 crown. Ontario Christian, also a frequent participant deep in the playoffs, notched the No. 2 seed in Division 6. Wild card games will be played Wednesday, with the first round starting Friday.

Cajon and Colony come in as two-time defending CIF champions, but at least one of them won't make it a three-peat, as both the No. 5 Cowgirls and No. 7 Titans are in Division 1-AA this year. Highest seeds in the county are Barstow in 3-A and Lake Arrowhead Christian in 6-A at No. 2.

The Yucaipa football job, vacated with the removal of John Hallenbeck, will be advertised next week according to athletic director Mark Anderson. The job will be open to all applicants, with applicants within the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint School District receiving first consideration.
"We'll be opening it up pretty soon and see what kind of interest is out there," Anderson said.
The athletic director also shed a bit of light on the timetable in the removal of Hallenbeck, who was an assistant at Yucaipa before taking on the head coaching job two years ago and who remains a teacher at Yucaipa High. The decision to part ways was made late last week after a postseason review process.
"The athletic department ran its end-of-the-season review and the decision was made not to renew (Hallenbeck) as football coach," Anderson said. "John is a good person and it was a tough decision to make, but we decided that we needed to part ways."
Just got a call in from the San Bernardino-San Gorgonio girls soccer game, which saw the Cardinals tie the Spartans 1-1 and clinch the first-ever girls soccer playoff berth for SBHS. The Cardinals (5-12-4 overall, 4-3-3 San Andreas League) needed to tie or win to qualify and got a goal from Patricia Aguirre with five minutes left to do so.
Yucaipa football coach John Hallenbeck is out at coach of Yucaipa after two seasons, according to Hallenbeck. The coach did not go into details when I got a hold of him a couple of minutes ago, as he confirmed his departure and denied comment after that.
"There's too much going on right now and I can't say anything at this moment," Hallenbeck said. "Maybe it's something I'll be willing to discuss later, but not now."
Hallenbeck was 11-10 in two seasons with the Thunderbirds after taking over for Scott Pearne, advancing to the playoffs in 2008 and going 5-5 this past season. Yucaipa had a chance to make a fourth straight playoff appearance this fall, but fell to Carter 28-7 in the season finale.
Although the brackets don't come out until Thursday, I believe, the seeding has been done for the Division 6 dual meet wrestling, taking place at Baldwin Park Sierra Vista High School on Saturday.
Although defending champion Morro Bay is seeded No. 1, the next three teams are all from San Bernardino County: Oak Hills, Bloomington and Kaiser in that order. That means there's a decent chance a county team will make it to the finals. Only the 9 league champions are guaranteed spots in the 16-team bracket in D6, so with Kaiser seeded fourth, the Cats will take one of those 7 at-large spots, and another will go to Santa Ynez, runner-up in the Los Padres League behind Sierra Vista and seeded fifth for Saturday.
Nothing much has changed here, with Los Osos leading the Division V pack and No. 3 Redlands East Valley leading the group of locals looking to overthrow the Grizzlies.
Not much has changed here lately, as Granite Hills is No. 2 in Division IV while Ontario Christian holds that spot in D6.
The High Desert is feeling good again, as Oak Hills jumps into first in Division VI while Hesperia and Granite Hills are ranked No. 2 in Division V and VI, respectively.
Unlike the boys, there's not a team ranked No. 1 in the girls right now - a marked departure from the past couple years. There are a lot of top 5 teams though, led by Ayala's No. 3 ranking in Division I-A.
After a week off for National Signing Day and disease, the polls are back! The county is representing at the higher levels, as Chino Hills (Division I-A) and Summit (Division II-AA) have joined D2-A No. 1 Eisenhower as top-ranked teams. Should make for some fun when the pairings get released Sunday.

Alta Loma and Etiwanda Qualified 11 kids for CIF. Upland had 10, Los Osos had 8, Rancho Cucamonga and Claremont had 1 each
The Rivals.com 250 to watch list for 2011 was released Tuesday with a Sunkist League flavor, as Summit QB/WR Devon Blackmon and Kaiser DB Desman Carter both made the cut.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Blackmon, who plays quarterback at Summit but projects as a wide receiver at the next level, has already started to blow up offerwise, as he sports scholarship offers from USC, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, UCLA and Arizona State among others.
Carter, a rangy 6-foot-1, 195-pounder who can play both corner and safety, doesn't have any offers yet but should get some shortly, as he has shown ability in pass coverage and run support. He follows up Jason Shirley (UCLA) and Anthony Brown (USC) as Kaiser players that will likely sign with Division I schools.
Cajon high school basketball coaches Mark Lehman (girls) and Randy Murray (boys) are accepting nominations for the 30th Annual San Bernardino-Riverside All-Star basketball games to be held April 14 at Cajon High School. The girls all-star game will begin at 6 p.m. - with a 3-point shooting contest at halftime - with the boys game to follow at 8 p.m. A dunk contest will take place at halftime of the boys game.
Nominations can be sent to Lehman for the girls game at mark.lehman@sbcusd.com and Murray for the boys game at randy.murray@sbcusd.com. Nominations must include player's name, height, position, school, uniform number and a brief writeup explaining why they should be selected.
It's late and I've been terrible in the NFL playoffs, so I'm not going to mince words.
Indianapolis (-5) over New Orleans. For those of you who want a score, let's say Indy 34, New Orleans 24.
Would have done this by yesterday, but a nasty cold threw me for a loss. I'm ready to go again though. With that, here's a complete breakdown of local Division I FBS (I-A) and FCS (I-AA) signees.
By school
1. Redlands 4; 2 tie. Colony 3, Colton 3, Los Osos 3, Rancho Cucamonga 3, Redlands East Valley 3; 7 tie. Arroyo Valley 2, Don Lugo 2, Hesperia 2, Kaiser 2, Serrano 2, Upland 2; 13 tie. Aquinas 1, Cajon 1, Chaffey 1, Granite Hills 1, Miller 1, Sultana 1.
Redlands was the surprising winner in this category, as three Terriers - OL Justin Corrales (Bryant University), LB Cole Gridley (Valparaiso) and K/P Shaun McClain (Weber State) were able to parlay strong senior seasons into FCS scholarships. LB Jordan Thomas (San Diego State) was the only FBS scholarship to Redlands, but the Terriers get props for getting their successful kids scholarships.
The teams with three scholarship players are among the usual suspects when it comes to getting kids to Division I scholarships, as REV, Colton, Colony, Rancho Cucamonga and Los Osos have seen an army of players get to the next level recently. REV, Colton and Los Osos all sent their players to FBS school, with each having at least one kid sign with a Pac-10 school. Rancho also had a Pac-10 kid in TE Randall Telfer (USC), while Colony had a Big 12 kid in DB Jered Bell (Colorado).
No real shocks in the 2 and 1 scholarship crowd except maybe Serrano, which had two FBS kids. The Diamondbacks are known for doing more with less, so its no shock that they made a CIF final with two FBS seniors on the roster.
By college:
1. San Diego State 4. 2 tie. Fresno State 3, Oregon 3, USC 3; 5 tie. Montana State 2, Sacramento State 2, San Jose State 2, UNLV 2, Utah 2, UTEP 2; 11 tie. Army 1, Bryant 1, Colorado 1, Iowa State 1, Kansas State 1, Nevada 1, Portland State 1, Prairie View A&M 1, San Diego 1, UCLA 1, Valparaiso 1, Washington 1, Washington State 1, Weber State 1.
On the non-BCS level, San Diego State and Fresno State continue to do work in the county. When Aztecs coach Brady Hoke was hired last year, he told recruits that he was going to put an emphasis on Inland Empire athletes. He's done exactly that, signing 3 SAL kids last year and four county kids this year in Thomas, Serrano DE Everett Beed, Hesperia WR Jay Waddell and Granite Hills TE Bryce Quigley. A fifth, Serrano RB Dionza Bradford, verbally committed to San Diego State before backing out and going with UNLV. So Hoke is getting things done.
Pat Hill has consistently brought local talent into the fold and this year is no different, with Los Osos WR Sean Alston, Arroyo Valley LB Ofa Fifita and Rancho Cucamonga QB Greg Watson all inking with the Bulldogs. Montana State also was a big player in the FCS ranks, getting guys with FBS interest in Don Lugo DB Steve Bethley and Miller RB David Dash.
As far as the Pac-10 goes, 2010 saw a reversal from 2009. Last year, it was UCLA and Oregon State that cleaned up, while this year saw their rivals have success. The Trojans, despite a coaching change, got Kaiser RB/DB Anthony Brown, Telfer and the county's highest-ranked recruit, Don Lugo DT George Uko, to sign. Only an 11th-hour stunner by Kaiser LB Josh Shirley kept UCLA from being swept out of the county.
As for the Oregon schools, the Ducks got two extremely productive defensive players in Los Osos DE Tony Washington and Colton DB Derrick Malone and stole Colton K Alejandro Maldonado from Washington on the last weekend. Last year, it was Oregon State that did damage, with Freshman All-American OL Michael Philipp from Arroyo Valley being the crown jewel.
As far as out-of-region teams, I guess the big winner would be the Big 12 North. Colorado (Colony DB Jered Bell), Iowa State (Hesperia/Chaffey College TE Ricky Howard) and Kansas State (Sultana/Mt. SAC OL Manase Foketi) all signed area players while Nebraska courted several local players as well.
This is what we have right now. Still up in the air about Shaun McClain and Jonathan Mack, who have verbally committed but have not signed.

If football doesn't work out for Josh Shirley, poker should be his call. After rampant speculation of a final four of USC, Miami (Fla), Arizona and Washington, Shirley threw a curveball and picked UCLA - a school he didn't take an official visit to.
"There were ups and downs, I'm not going to lie, but in the end, UCLA was where I wanted to be," Shirley said. "It was between UCLA and Washington and I felt most comfortable in blue and gold."
This flies in the face of the conventional wisdom of every recruiting service, my article in the Sun this morning and my blog entry from just over an hour ago. Even Shirley was a litte bit surprised.
"Two days ago I wasn't even thinking about UCLA," Shirley said. "I probably surprised a lot of people with that decision. I was looking for reasons to not go to every school on my list and UCLA had the least amount of reasons."
While I was shocked at the announcement, a couple of things, in retrospect, should have tipped me off. When I saw Shirley in the lobby of the building where the studio was located, he had a UCLA letter of intent on top of a stack of papers. And a UCLA hat was surprisingly in the stack of caps brought into the studio, not to mention the fact that Shirley insisted on another UCLA hat after the original Bruin hat the station brought out didn't fit.
After over an hour of pacing around and being nervous, Shirley was relaxed after the annoucement, signing his letter of intent in the Prime Ticket break room with a smile on his face. And afterwards, he somewhat marveled at his decision.
"That was a surprise," Shirley said right before his contingent of family and friends left for a hearty meal at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles.
Prior to making the death march down the 10 to LA, I was at Colton, where Colton High School put on an assembly honoring DB Derrick Malone (Oregon), K Alejandro Maldonado (Oregon), DB Jonathan Mack (UNLV), DE Michael Newton (Arizona Western Junior College) and LB Ma'alona Kiliona (University of Redlands), along with softball players April Vasquez and Jessica Lemus.
Several hundred students showed up to honor the athletes, who added to Colton's rich tradition of sending players to college.
"It's something we take a lot of pride in," Colton athletic director Harold Strauss said. "When these kids come into this program, I tell them that if they give me their all in the classroom and on the field, we'll give them our all in getting their college paid for."
Both Malone and Maldonado will be Ducks, with Malone deciding for Oregon in November and Maldonado deciding over the weekend, switching his commitment from Washington.
"It was hard to tell Washington no, but I had to go with what was in my heart," Maldonado said. "When I visited Oregon, I knew that was where I had to be. Washington was nice, but Oregon was perfect."
Malone chose the Ducks over several colleges, including most of the Pac-10 and Nebraska. While he made his decision well before Maldonado made his and was pumped about Oregon already, having his teammate with him made it that much sweeter.
"It's awesome," Malone said. "I've been going to school with (Maldonado) since middle school. Middle school, then high school, and now college together. It's going to be fun and I can't wait."
Mack might have been the happiest of the Division I signees. As of Monday, Mack was unsure if he would sign today, but he secured his ride with the Rebels Tuesday night and was all smiles when he signed his letter of intent today.
"My mom was really nervous, but I had faith that it was all going to work out," Mack said. "I'm really happy right now and it's a big relief."
Just arrived at the Los Angeles studios of Fox Sports Prime Ticket, where I, along with several of Josh Shirley's family members and the Press-Enterprise's Mirijam Swanson, are awaiting the Kaiser linebacker's college announcement.
As for Shirley, he's dressed to impress, with snazzy white dress shoes with gold laces with white dress pants and a white button-down shirt with a black t-shirt under it. He is also loaded with envelopes and National Letters of Intent.
"Anxious," said Shirley simply about his mood at this moment. Shirley also indicated that this decision was more nerve-wracking than any football game he has played to to date.
Also in attendance is Rancho Cucamonga running back Michael Boyd, a friend of Shirley who's also looking to sign a letter of intent over the next
So who will Shirley pick of USC, Miami (Fla), Washington and Arizona? He's done a great job of holding his cards tight and he seems to be still debating the decision as we hang out in the hall of Fox Sports Prime Ticket, but my hunch is either USC or Miami, more than likely USC. But I guess we'll see in less than an hour.
Got off the phone with Redlands athletic director Ken Morse a couple minutes ago and he indicated that the Terriers will hold their Signing Day ceremony at 12:30 p.m. today. Expected to sign are LB Jordan Thomas (San Diego State), LB Cole Gridley (Valparaiso), K Shaun McClain (Montana State) and OL Justin Corrales (Bryant University). Morse wasn't 100 percent on Corrales' school of choice though.
Also, Arroyo Valley will hold its signing ceremony as part of a senior assembly at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. The signees, LB Ofa Fifita (Fresno State) and WR Damon Ogburn (San Jose State), will send in their letters of intent today.
Arrived at Colton High School 20 minutes ago and discovered that cornerback Jonathan Mack verbally committed to UNLV and will sign his letter of intent in a few minutes here. Mack joins safety Derrick Malone and kicker Alejandro Maldonado, who will sign with Oregon, as Division I signees.
Sitting in the Redlands East Valley gym right now after attending the Wildcats' National Signing Day ceremony, which saw DE Andrew Hudson sign with Washington, QB Tyler Shreve ink with Utah, OL David Peterson sign with San Jose State and RB A.J. Fernandez and LB Dillon Curley sign with Northwestern College out of the NAIA.
Arroyo Valley wide receiver Damon Ogburn, who committed to Idaho State after officially visiting the campus this past weekend, has reversed field and committed to San Jose State according to AVHS head coach Marcus Soward.
Ogburn's switch was based on logisitics, as he felt that San Jose State gave him better access to his family in San Bernardino.
"San Jose is about a five-hour drive to San Bernardino and that was the biggest factor," Soward said. "He thought about it and felt that Idaho State was a little too far away from his family."
Ogburn joins DE Keenan Brown, who signed with the Spartans two years ago, as Arroyo Valley players who have gone off to San Jose State. Brown's tale was similar, as he was committed to Utah State before switching to the Spartans in the 11th hour.
Arroyo Valley will have a ceremony for Ogburn and LB Ofa Fifita, who committed to Fresno State, Thursday as part of its senior assembly. Both players will fax their letters of intent to schools tomorrow though.
After having the appeal of the CIF-Southern Section's ruling which made Miller senior girls basketball players Chloe Wells and Cassandra Mitchell ineligible denied last Thursday, the parents of Chloe Wells is trying to get the ACLU involved as part of a possible lawsuit.
The ruling on Wells - who starred for Miller's CIF championship teams as a freshman and sophomore before moving out to North Carolina for her junior season - and Mitchell was handed down by the CIF-SS offices in November, as they denied the hardship waiver for Wells and Mitchell, who moved with Chloe to Southern California over the summer. After taking it to the CIF-State appeals court, Chloe's mother Nyla is trying the ACLU route.
"It's just a shame what they are doing," Nyla Wells said. "It's not right and we are going to fight it. Cassandra left a bad home situation to come out here and get to play and hopefully, get a scholarship. How they can say she's not a hardship is beyond me."
The Wells have just started the process of getting the ACLU involved, as they have presented their case to the organization's lawyers. From there, the ACLU will decide whether they want to take on the case, a process that takes roughly a week according to Nyla Wells.
"We feel its gotten to the point where the civil rights of Chloe and Cassandra have been violated," Wells said. "Hopefully they'll take on the case and we can proceed with our next move."
While talking to Colton athletic director Harold Strauss about Alejandro Maldonado's switch from Washington to Oregon, the retired coach mentioned to me that the open football head coaching job has been opened up. Strauss indicated that the position would be open to all applicants from now though the end of next week.
"We wanted to open it up 10 days and take what we have at that point, interview, and make our decision," Strauss said. "From talking to people in the area, there's interest in this job and we are pretty confident we'll find someone during that time period."
Strauss did float the name of Scott Pearne - who resigned at Riverside North after the season and who coached at Yucaipa from 2005-07 - as someone who has expressed interest in the position. Strauss retired in November after 10 seasons with the Yellowjackets and 229 career wins.
The retired coach isn't totally ducking out of the football life. After attending Colton's National Signing Day story Wednesday morning, Strauss will be flying to New Orleans, where he'll be speaking at the Double Wing Football Coaches Association's annual convention.
Strauss will be in New Orleans until Monday, making his first-ever visit to the city a sizable one.
"I've been told that I need to go see Bourbon Street," Strauss said. "I'm looking forward to the trip. With the Saints being in the Super Bowl, I'm expecting the city to be pretty lively."
An investigation into allegations of recruiting made by the family of former player Diamond Smith in the Rialto girls basketball program and head coach Michael Anderson has found no wrongdoing according to Rialto principal Andres Luna.
Colton kicker Alejandro Maldonado, verbally committed to Washington since the summer, decommitted Sunday to Oregon after officially visiting the campus according to Colton athletic director Harold Strauss. The Seattle Times also wrote a story about it, which can be read here.
"He cancelled a trip three weeks ago and was just going to stay with Washington, but we told him that you need to see (Oregon) and make a decision from that," Strauss said. "He went up for a visit this weekend, loved it, and now he's going to Oregon."
Maldonado will be joining teammate Derrick Malone, a safety who committed to the Ducks in November, in Eugene. They'll be signing their letters of intent in Colton's auditorium during second period Wednesday at roughly 8:30 a.m., hopefully joined by cornerback Jonathan Mack.
Mack, who has been offered by Nebraska, Iowa State, UNLV and Utah State, is in limbo right now, as schools who have previously offered may have filled their available slots in Strauss' opinion.
"He went up for an official visit with Derrick to Nebraska in October and everything seemed good, but we haven't heard from (Nebraska coach Bo) Pelini in a while," Strauss said. "We told Jonathan that sometimes its better to reserve a spot because things fill up, but he wanted to concentrate on the season. Things are happening for him all at once right now and hopefully it will work out."
Been working the phones a bit this morning and got information on a few signing-day press conferences. Redlands East Valley will be holding its press conference at the crack of dawn Wednesday, with a 7 a.m. signing with DE Andrew Hudson (Washington), QB Tyler Shreve (Utah) and OL David Peterson (San Jose State) set to be in REV's football office.
Serrano will be holding its signing at 10:30 a.m. in the performing arts room on campus. Set to sign are DE Everett Beed (San Diego State) and RB Dionza Bradford (UNLV), along with a few soccer players according to athletic director Ray Maholchic.
Kaiser linebacker Josh Shirley will be at the FOX studios in Los Angeles for his announcement Wednesday. While the exact time of the announcement hasn't been set yet, Shirley was told to be at the studios at 11 a.m. according to a text he sent me. Shirley is deciding between USC, Miami (Fla), Washington and Arizona.
