After nearly six months of waiting, redrafting job ads and indecision, Colton High School decided that it was best to not mess with a good thing.
The Yellowjackets selected from within the Colton football family to replace Harold Strauss Thursday, as it hired longtime assistant coach Rick Bray. Bray, who has been an assistant at Colton for 21 of the past 25 years, including the entirety of Strauss' tenure, was approved at Thursday's Colton Unified School District school board meeting.

Rancho Cucamonga High School graduate and New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas will host a football camp in his hometown for the second consecutive year.

The Arrowhead Christian boys volleyball team may have fallen short in its quest for its first-even CIF-SS championship this past Saturday, but the season isn't over for the Eagles, who are taking part in the CIF-State Southern California Regional boys volleyball tournament this week.
The Eagles, seeded No. 5 in Division III, will play at top-seeded Laguna Beach tonight at 7 p.m in the regional semifinals. Arrowhead Christian advanced by defeating No. 4-seeded Los Angeles Foshay Learning Center 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
Should ACA pull the upset against Laguna Beach, which won the CIF-SS Division 2 championship, it would be matched up with the winner of the semifinal between San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret's -- which defeated ACA in the CIF-SS title game -- and Solana Beach Santa Fe Christian.
The Inland Empire Baseball Coaches Association, in partnership with the 66ers, is hosting the San Bernardino County All-Star Baseball Game on Tuesday, June 8 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. The all-star game, which was run before by San Bernardino Valley College, is resuming after not being played last year. For more information and to submit nominations, contact Redlands High School baseball coach and IEBCA president Estevan Valencia at estevan_valencia@redlands.k12.ca.us.
Inland Empire Basketball is having a banquet to honor the Eisenhower boys basketball team's back-to-back CIF-SS Division 2-A championships on Tuesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Sierra Lakes Golf Club in Fontana. The black-tie-optional event will feature UC Riverside athletic director Stan Morrison will be the keynote speaker at the event, which will celebrate the Eagles' achievements from the last two years, including their Division II state championship of 2009 and the awarding of the Wooden Award to senior guard Alex Varner.
Entry fee to the event is $30, with checks payable to Inland Empire Basketball.
Now it's softball's turn, with the second round also to be played Tuesday.

When I was covering the CIF-SS Masters Swimming Meet on Tuesday at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, I neglected to mention that all three of the Redlands East Valley boys relay teams competed. Those three relay teams were the only boys relay teams from the entire San Bernardino County to compete at the Masters Meet.
And to make it even more remarkable, REV did not have a single individual boy qualify for Masters, either. (Tori Andreas did on the girls side.) It's a cliche, but I guess it's a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
The omitted relay team, the medley relay, was originally an alternate but got a shot to race and moved up from 20th best time coming in to 19th.
So, here are those relay teams:
200 medley relay (senior Shane Blake 26.23 seconds, senior Michael Gillotti 28.07, senior Taylor Glasgow 25.27, junior John Fee 22.06), 20th best qualifying time, finished 19th, 1:41.63.
200 freestyle relay (senior Taylor Adams 22.28, junior Michael Gardner 21.83, senior Ben Hamada 21.95, John Fee 21.88), 6th best qualifying time, finished 7th, 1:27.94.
400 freestyle relay (Shane Blake 48.66, Taylor Adams 49.35, Ben Hamada 50.02, Michael Gardner 48.53), 12th best qualifying time, finished 10th, 3:16.56.
Ayala was the only school from the county to have girls relay teams compete at Masters, but they had to settle for two of the three races. The 200 medley relay team was 11th and the 200 freestyle relay was ninth.
A technical error in the Sun this morning killed the writeup of this game, so I thought I'd do one of my own.
The No. 4-seeded Arrowhead Christian boys volleyball team got a gargantuan effort from senior outside hitter Will Quanstrom and setter David Shippee to advance to the CIF-SS Division 5 final with a four-game victory over Palos Verdes Chadwick in the semifinals late Tuesday.
The Eagles will face No. 2-seeded San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret's in the D5 final Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Cypress College. To get there, ACA defeated Chadwick 18-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-18 thanks to the heroics of Quanstrom, who set a school record with 48 kills while adding 10 digs and seven blocks. Shippee had 50 assists for the Eagles while Josh Shaw had seven kills and nine blocks.
The University of Utah has suspended the scholarship of Redlands East Valley quarterback/baseball player Tyler Shreve as a result of his February altercation with Redlands East Valley baseball coach James Cordes after Shreve was dismissed from the team. The school will reevaluate the situation in January, at which time it could reinstate Shreve if it chooses.
The link to the story can be accessed here. Shreve pleaded not guilty to charges of misdemeanor battery to a school employee and his pretrial hearing is set for May 27.
Now to softball. Unlike baseball, all the first-round games will be Thursday

Standout Redlands East Valley quarterback/shortstop Tyler Shreve pleaded not guilty to assault charges at his arraignment Thursday according to this article by Jesse Gill of the Daily Facts.
Shreve is being charged for his role in an incident February 25 where he allegedly attacked REV baseball coach James Cordes after an argument which resulted in his removal from the Wildcat baseball team. Shreve was arrested at the school and withdrew from the school several days later.
His pretrial hearing is set to take place on May 27 according to the article. The University of Utah, who Shreve signed a letter of intent to play football will on National Signing Day, is waiting for the results of the trial before ruling on his scholarship status.
With its 11-1 victory over Pacific, the Colton High School baseball team won its first league title since 1995 according to head coach Mike Reh. The Yellowjackets (18-8 overall, 12-3 league) split with San Gorgonio, who won its second consecutive league title and will get the No. 1 seed by virtue of its 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Colton. The Spartans (22-4, 12-3) defeated San Bernardino 18-0 Thursday.
Cajon (17-8, 11-4) had a chance to make it a three-way split, but fell to Arroyo Valley 5-3 Thursday to pull into the No. 3 spot out of the SAL. Playoff seedings for Division 3 will be released Monday.

Another note from Fowler that I thought should be passed along...
Considering the amount of its graduates who play basketball for a living, the Etiwanda High School alumni basketball game on May 21 won't exactly be full of players trying to capture their former glory.
Fresh off their NBA rookie seasons, New Orleans Hornets point guard Darren Collison of UCLA fame and Portland Trail Blazers power forward Jeff Pendergraph will headline a group of players that includes some who play professionally overseas.
Collison, who won a CIF championiship at Etiwanda with the Arizona State-bound Pendergraph in 2005 and led UCLA to three final four appearances in four seasons, thrived in the absence of injured Hornets point guard Chris Paul, averaging 19 points and 8.5 assists the last three months of this season.
The alumni game will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Etiwanda on May 21.
A few county teams survived the first round of CIF-SS boys volleyball play Tuesday and will be playing in the second round today, with three teams (Miller, Arrowhead Christian and Summit) hosting games.
Miller was the only Citrus Belt League team to survive the first round Tuesday, defeating Montebello in four games (21-25, 25-12, 25-22, 32-30) to notch the first playoff victory in school history. The Rebels will be tested tonight at 7 p.m. against Torrance Bishop Montgomery in Division 4 action.
ACA, the No. 4 seed in Division 5, will host Saddleback Valley Christian at 7 p.m. tonight after sweeping Gardena Serra in three games by the score of 25-15, 25-23, 25-23. San Andreas League champion Summit also advanced in D5 play by taking care of Glendale Adventist in routine fashion, sweeping it 25-10, 25-10, 25-13. The SkyHawks will host Bellflower St. John Bosco at 7 p.m.
Ontario Christian also advanced in the D5 playoffs with a four-game victory over Carson CAMS -- 25-16, 25-11, 21-25, 25-21. The Knights will play at No. 2 seeded San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret's at 5 p.m. today.

Alta Loma sophomore Andy Anderson finished fourth in the CIF-SS Division 2 diving championships on Tuesday at Fullerton College. Anderson, the Baseline League champion, scored 386 points on Tuesday to build on his seventh-place finish as a freshman in last season's CIF championships.
Connor Webb of Los Osos scored 293 points to finish 11th while Anderson's teammate Chris Olsen placed 17th with a score of 202.
Los Osos' Tyler Beck finished 19th (187) and Scott Clawson 29th (100) while the Upland duo of Scott Mackay (115) and Dustin Borges (113) finished 23rd and 24th, respectively. Claremont's Keaton Hutchins placed 31st (98).
On the girls side, Los Osos sophomore Mia Goings, part of a trio from the school that swept the podium at the Baseline League finals last week, was the Inland Valley's top finisher. Goings, the Baseline League champion, placed 12th at the CIF championships with a score of 348.
Los Osos teammate Devon Weston finshed 16th (325) and Desirae Aussef 23rd (141) after the two finished second and third, respectively, at the Baseline League finals. Upland's Danielle Tomes placed 20th (213) and Claremont's Piper Moore 29th (128).
The second County Clash of the season will take place Saturday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park with a tripleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Yucaipa and Miller will start things off at 1, with Kaiser and Riverside Norte Vista playing at 4 p.m. and Fontana and Redlands playing in the nightcap at 7 p.m. Yucaipa is the only repeat from the previous County Clash, as the Thunderbirds defeated Carter 4-3 April 3.
Tickets to the Clash can be purchased at all of the above schools or at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
The countdown to the awarding of the 46th annual Ken Hubbs Award will start Monday, as the selection committee will pick the overall winner of the award from a group of nominees that have already been submitted by the eligible schools.
The individual school winners will be announced Friday, May 14 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park during the 66ers' game with the Quakes while the overall winner will be honored Monday, May 17 at 6 p.m. at the Elks Club in San Bernardino.
Recent winners of the award include Redlands East Valley football player Ronnie Fouch (2007), Big Bear football player Kriss Proctor (2008) and Yucaipa swimmer Trevor Hoyt last year. Cajon basketball player Layshia Clarendon was honored last year with an award for outstanding female athlete as well.
The Rialto football job, which reopened last week with the resignation of Don Markham, has not been reposted, but former RHS offensive coordinator Gavin Pachot has been named the interim coach pending school board approval according to Rialto Unified School District Director of Communications Syeda Jafri.
Pachot has served time as an assistant at Redlands East Valley, Fontana and Rialto, spending the last three seasons with the Knights under former coach Eric Rodriguez.
As for the permanent position, it will be posted in the near future, with in-district applicants getting first priority.
"We'll open it up in the district, see who applies and move on from there," Jafri said.
The Colton football coaching search saga has taken another turn, as the Colton Unified School district reposted the ad for the position last week.
One of the applicants for the position, which closes Friday, is former coach and current athletic director Harold Strauss. Strauss, who has 229 victories in his high-school coaching career, would seem like the no-brainer choice, but he isn't quite sure that's the case.
"I pulled the trigger and came to terms with not coaching again and being the full-time athletic director, so we'll see what happens," Strauss said. "If I'm the coach, I'll go out there and give it my all, but we'll see how everything plays out."
Strauss, who coached the Yellowjackets, indicated that interviews would be held next week and that the target date for a new hire is May 17, the first day of spring practice for Colton.
